Chapter 16: Serpent type

It was early hours of the afternoon and the sun was blasting over the settlement with scorching heat.

At the moment, at the spacious backyard of Old Man James’ house, Noah and Ragnar could be seen standing close to each other.

Sitting in front of them on an old wooden stool was Old Man James who could not stop smiling at the thoughts of teaching the two finest young men in the settlement.

If he could make them into expert swordmen, he would have something valid to brag about and even if he died, his name and teaching would live on in their hearts.

’I prayed for times like this,’ he thought as his gaze switched between the two of them.

While he was extremely happy about teaching both of them the ways of the sword, he was also worried.

"Noah, can you describe the monster once again?" he asked.

Noah nodded, then he began describing the monster they saw last night in intricate detail.

"It looked really strong and scary, but its flying speed was not that fast," Noah concluded his explanation.

Ragnar also added the details Noah missed: since he was the closest to the monster, he saw more of its features than the twin.

When both of them finished explaining to the old man, he fell silent. Both youths gazed at him, awaiting his response impatiently.

Old Man James fell into deep thought for a few minutes and heaved a long sigh as his aged eyes aimed at the youths in front of him.

"What you guys saw last night is called Monsterborn," he revealed.

"Monsterborn? What is that? What are its characteristics and how can we beat something like that?" Noah asked.

Ragnar only nodded his head; though he already knew the name of the monster thanks to the system, he did not have any idea about its strength and weakness.

"Monsterborn are not entirely monsters," Old Man James began. "They are humans that have merged with monster cores through unnatural means; they obtain the abilities of the monster core they consumed, in your case, the ability to fly."

Ragnar and Noah were greatly surprised at the revelation; no wonder it had the face of a human being, they thought.

Old Man James observed their expression before he continued, "Since they were once human, they retain their human intelligence which makes it difficult to kill them. They are tougher than ordinary monsters or demons at the same level."

"There should be a way to kill them, right? You once told me every living thing has one or a few weak points that can be explored, surely, the Monsterborn has one," Noah asked.

Old Man James smiled at him and shook his head, "Monsterborn are complex, their weak points are not defined because they merge with all sorts of monsters; those that merged with serpent-type monsters would possess different weak points than those who become Monsterborn from consuming the monster core of a wolf-type monster."

Old Man James managed to explain the originality of the Monsterborn to the two of them.

He proceeded to warn them not to target the Monsterborn for the time being.

"Even if everyone present in the Hamlet right now rose up against a Monsterborn, they would be defeated so beware."

"We will," Ragnar and Noah nodded.

"Great, great! Now it is time for the training you two came for," Old Man James said as he stood up from his stool with the support of a wooden cane.

Seeing this, both Ragnar and Noah smiled.

Old Man James walked closer to the two of them and began narrating the stories about his days as a grand knight of a prosperous town.

He talked about his greatest feats, tales about his deceased comrades, and even about the devastating war.

After he was done narrating, he stood in front of them and discussed their training for the day.

"Before strength, a swordsman needs endurance and your training today would help to boost your endurance," he said.

Ragnar nodded happily while a frown appeared on Noah’s face.

Old Man James noticed his frown and chuckled but did not address it.

"I want both of you to run around the settlement five times," he stated.

The happy expression on Ragnar’s face dampened when he heard the details of their first day of training.

’Ahh! I can not believe I’m experiencing this like protagonists in the novels I’ve read,’ Ragnar complained inwardly.

On the other hand, Noah could not hold back his disappointment as he voiced his complaint, "Old Man James, I’ve already completed my endurance training and other basic training. You promised to start imparting the actual ways of the sword today."

"I’m sorry there has been a change of plan, Noah, but this is for your good. Your endurance would be doubled, think about it that way."

Although Noah was quite dismayed, he nodded his head but refused to argue further.

"If you two can complete the endurance training before nightfall, I will reward you with a special book containing the stories of Adrian Winterseed, one of the greatest magic swordsman in the South Continent," said Old Man James.

"For real?" Noah’s eyes brightened.

"Yes, so you two better get on with your training before it gets too late."

"Sure, we’ll complete the training before nightfall, Ragnar, come on let’s go."

Ragnar was surprised to see Noah this active. ’This guy is quite odd,’ he thought.

Ragnar and Noah dashed out of the Old Man’s compound and began their workout routine.

Old Man James watched for a few seconds with a smile.

But after they were out of sight, a frown appeared on his face.

"Why is a Monsterborn targeting this hamlet of all the other hamlets? Could it be a spy sent by opposing territories? Are they planning to finish off the survivors of the last war? This is bad! Why did it have to happen at a time like this?"

Old Man James sat down and fell into deep thought.

A certain memory replayed in his head: the image of a serpent-type Monsterborn appeared, causing the Old Man to clench his fist with a rageful expression on his face.

"If only I had been stronger back then, my wife, my children, my little brother, I would have been able to protect them," he muttered to himself with regret in his eyes.
