Chapter 70: Dead But Alive

The chandeliers were lit, brightening up the hallway as Kaleb made his way from the dining hall.

’Is she mad at me to such an extent?’ He couldn’t count the number of times he’d asked himself that question. Not seeing her leading the mansion’s maids in serving dinner as she usually did, was the last straw for him to make a move.

’I need to see her.’

Ever since returning to the mansion that afternoon, she hadn’t welcomed him and that was acceptable. Yet to miss dinner, wasn’t something Thelma would do. After all, this wasn’t the first time he’d been ma—

"Wait, is it because I didn’t hit her?" Kaleb mumbled. ’What am I even thinking?!’

Almost existing from the hallway he currently was in, he halted in his tracks.

Before him were two paths, both similar and leading to different areas. The first one, as he remembered would lead him to the kitchen area, while the second was to her bedroom.

’Where would she be? Does she even cook?’ He wondered, his eyes moving between the two. Soon after what seemed like hours, he chose and was off on the path to his left.

Behind a door, two figures in black coverings could be seen. One was busy fidgeting with the knob, while another sat there idle.

"Where are we heading to?" The idle one asked the other.

"Shhss, keep your voice down." The other said, holding up a finger as a gesture.

"There are no knights around, Thelma." The voice came again, though keeping it down as the other had said.

"I know Alice, but it’s better to be safe than sorry." Thelma resumed what she was doing, holding two metallic sticks.

"Says the one breaking into the Master’s Bedroom, that’s just great," Alice remarked, when suddenly—

*CLICK!

The door had been successfully unlocked, as Thelma tucked her tools away. And standing up, she glanced at Alice, her face hidden under the hood with the darkness of the area adding up.

’Is there anything I can do about her?’ Turning the knob, she pushed the door, sliding it open and making no creaks.

••••••••••[Flashback in a flashback— haha]

Thelma and Alice could be seen in the room, it was around the afternoon with the sun up and scorching outside.

Thelma was on the bed while the other stood a distance away, her arms folded with eyes glued to her.

"Six years, that’s how long since I last saw you. When did you become a spiritualist?"

"Six years ago."

"That’s impossible, we were forty-two then. It’s way past the awakening age— you couldn’t have afforded it."

"You’re right, I couldn’t have, cause I never did." Alice said, a puzzled look now up Thelma’s upon hearing her words.

"Thelma, what did you do to me?"

"I killed you— I kill...ed...you." Just then, the realization hit her and she moved back an inch. She had her eyes on Alice’s own, and could vividly recall what happened. ’Those two, they were lifeless and dead...’

"Tell me, why didn’t you notice it was me? It just didn’t click right? There was a similarity, yet a difference which you couldn’t describe."

"Wait, how did you know?" Thelma was panicking within at this point, yet her face told nothing. As her hands were gripping the bedsheets, tight enough to stop it’s trembling.

"It’s simple Thelly, this isn’t my body." Alice had casually said it, yet what had hit her wasn’t just simple words. It’s weight was enough to send her right through the bed, only if it was physical and not mental.

"This... isn’t... your body?" She mumbled the words, the shock and her face evident more than ever.

Stepping closer, she climbed up to the bed and sat right beside Thelma who had her back to the headboard.

"That’s why they are dangerous— those who sent me." She glanced at the other to see any different reaction, yet still it was the same shock there. "I’ve seen what they can do, it’s frightening. Yet, whenever their name was mentioned, I could see it clearly. These people are afraid of something or moreover someone among the Elmores."

"They need something to bring them down, anything would be enough for them. A single match of fire, could ignite the approaching storm to hit and destroy NobleHouse Elmore, including all related to them."

Just then, Thelma’s eyes widened as she turned towards her, a smile creeping up her face. "Hahaha, do you know who the Elmores are?"

"Do you know who the Dark Corps are?"

At that moment, her heartcore skipped a series of beats, her brain short-circuiting. No thought came to mind, as everything in her suddenly stopped working.

"Da–da–da– da..." The words couldn’t escape her lips, since those two words alone carried a weight even as mere words.

"Let’s make a deal, a win-win deal."

"Huh?" The words had caught her off guard.

"I know you’re after something, you’re always after something Thelma."

Thelma’s shock disappeared, her eyes narrowing having realized she was being stalked all this while.

"I help you get what you want, and you tell me all I need to bring down this house. Do we have a deal?"

••••••••••••••••••

Stepping into the room, the hoods up their heads fell off. Thelma’s eyes scanned the room, trying to notice anything which would be what she was searching for.

"Wouldn’t it be better if I knew what we were searching for here?" Alice’s voice was heard as she shut the door behind her and drew closer to her.

"No, it wouldn’t." She replied, walking closer to the large bed at the center of the room.

Deciding to check around since she wasn’t needed much, Alice explored the room. ’Lord Regent, this sure is a fitting room for one of course.’

’Why aren’t there any keyholes around?’ Moving about the bed area, checking the drawers and sides of the bed for a compartment. There was nothing, increasing her frustration each second.

’How could finding a King Tier Monster Core be so difficult? I’m sure it’s with Vans instead, it must be.’ She was grounded in her thoughts. ’Isn’t one supposed to feel something when near it?’

At the other side of the room, Alice was stuck where she stood, goosebumps all over. Her senses were raging, her entire body screaming to her to run. Whatever was in that particular area, for an unknown reason had a suppressing energy.

But before she could decide to move an inch away or further—

*BANG!

*BANG!

A knock was heard on the door, the knob being heard turning afterwards.
