Chapter 586: The Mercenary Group’s Teamwork!
Right now, appearing before Xiao Yan and the others, was a giant beast covered in blue scales, about five zhang long, as large as a small hill.
Just one of the Frosthorn Giant Ox’s legs would take seven or eight adults to encircle it with their arms. For an ordinary person, seeing such a monster would be terrifying, but the mercenaries of Xiao Yan’s Dreamchaser Mercenary Group weren’t fazed at all.
When it came to size, some second- or third-rank magical beasts could actually be bigger than this Frosthorn Giant Ox. But in the world of magical beasts, strength was not usually determined by size. For example, the Thick-Winged Bird of Blackrock City was massive, but its fighting power was very weak—it was only used for transport.
Magical beasts generally had keen senses. Not long after the Dreamchaser Mercenary Group entered its territory, the Frosthorn Giant Ox noticed their presence.
“Moo!”
After spotting Xiao Yan and his group, the Frosthorn Giant Ox grew furious. A fierce light flashed in its huge eyes. It scraped the ground with its hooves and let out a deafening bellow in their direction.
“Leader, the Frosthorn Giant Ox has found us!” A nearby squad leader, who had the strength of a three-star Dou Spirit, spoke quickly.
“Mm.”
Hearing this, Xiao Yan nodded calmly. He slowly raised his right hand and turned back to call out, “Brothers, form up! Prepare the armor-piercing ballistae!”
Mercenary groups often had to fight huge magical beasts, so they rarely carried shields. Instead, they brought large armor-piercing ballistae—over three meters long and mounted on carts. Even the Dreamchaser Mercenary Group only had three of them, as Xiao Yan had paid a hefty price to acquire them. While these ballistae weren’t as powerful as those used by large armies—which could threaten Dou King experts—they could easily deal with Dou Spirit-level targets.
The Frosthorn Giant Ox, with its thick hide and flesh, would still suffer heavy damage if struck by a ballista bolt.
At Xiao Yan’s command, three ballista carts were quickly pushed to the front. The team found large boulders to anchor the carts, then loaded each with a massive three-meter bolt.
After giving the order, Xiao Yan led six other Dou Spirit experts in a charge toward the Frosthorn Giant Ox.
With his black heavy ruler in hand, Xiao Yan’s body radiated intense fighting spirit.
When the Frosthorn Giant Ox saw Xiao Yan and the others rushing over, the ferocity in its eyes intensified. It raised a hoof and charged at them.
“Flame-Splitting Ruler!”
Halfway through the charge, Xiao Yan unleashed a ground-level Dou Technique taught by Yao Lao.
Instantly, the black ruler in his hand was engulfed in red light, brimming with a powerful energy. When that energy peaked, a crimson crescent blade, five or six zhang long, erupted from the tip of the heavy ruler and slashed vertically toward the Frosthorn Giant Ox. As it swept by, even the air was split with a black line.
The Frosthorn Giant Ox’s eyes were filled with crimson light.
“Moo!”
At that moment, the giant ox paused. Between its icy-blue horns, energy rapidly gathered, and in a flash, it formed a three- to four-zhang-wide shield of blue energy in front of it.
“Boom!”
As soon as the blue energy shield took shape, the red crescent blade struck it hard. The resulting explosion of energy toppled tall trees and sent stones flying in all directions.
A moment later, Xiao Yan’s red crescent had faded, and the Frosthorn Giant Ox’s blue energy shield was left with several visible cracks.
Seeing this, the six Dou Spirit experts beside Xiao Yan all showed looks of astonishment. Xiao Yan’s combat strength once again shattered their expectations. Even though he was only at the peak of four-star Dou Spirit, he could go head-to-head with a high-level, fourth-rank magical beast.
The next moment, none of them wasted the opportunity. One attack after another struck the Frosthorn Giant Ox’s energy shield, completely shattering the already-cracked icy blue barrier.
With the shield destroyed, a hint of surprise flashed through the giant ox’s huge pupils. It no longer underestimated the strength of the mercenaries before it.
“You all, keep attacking from range—take every chance you get!”
After their successful strike, Xiao Yan issued another command, then charged in alone.
Xiao Yan had plenty of experience fighting magical beasts. He was skilled in close combat, which was why he chose to battle this way.
As Xiao Yan closed in, the Frosthorn Giant Ox first lowered its massive head, then charged straight at him.
When it got close enough, it raised its giant hoof and stomped down toward Xiao Yan’s head.
Seeing this, Xiao Yan quickly moved five or six meters to the left, narrowly dodging the crushing blow.
Then he swung his heavy black ruler and leaped forward, slashing at the ox’s belly.
The black ruler, surging with fiery energy, ripped through the ox’s hide, leaving a half-meter-long gash on its underside. Crimson blood instantly flowed from the wound.
Although this was just a minor injury for the Frosthorn Giant Ox, the fact that Xiao Yan could so easily pierce its defenses put the beast on high alert. Losing sight of Xiao Yan, it suddenly toppled to the right, rolling and crushing several large trees as it went.
Relying on his agility, Xiao Yan slipped out of the chaos through a narrow gap.
“Attack!”
Seeing the Frosthorn Giant Ox rolling and toppling trees, then preparing to get up, Xiao Yan made a quick hand gesture to the other mercenaries.
“Get the armor-piercing ballistae ready!”
Receiving Xiao Yan’s signal, Xiao Yu—who had been closely watching the fight—immediately gave the order.
Creak!
Creak!
Creak!
As Xiao Yu’s voice fell, three sharp mechanical sounds rang out. The giant bolts on the three ballista carts instantly locked onto the Frosthorn Giant Ox.
Whoosh!
In the next moment, the massive bolts shot out with a piercing wind, speeding straight toward the beast’s body.
At the same time, Xiao Yan and the six other Dou Spirit experts launched their attacks as well.
The Frosthorn Giant Ox had just managed to stand when it sensed a huge danger.
But this threat didn’t come from the Dou Spirit experts’ attacks—it was from the three enormous black ballista bolts.
