Chapter 265: Chapter 23: Meeting between two alphas [2]
After Kayden sent away his cousin and Knox, several minutes later, someone appeared before him without an appointment. He was a bit surprised, but he knew that time would come soon. Athan walked into his office without a word, closing the door behind him. Kayden raised his eyebrow, knowing exactly why Athan was there.
"I think we should go somewhere to talk privately." Kayden’s assistant nurse was just behind the partition after all.
"Indeed," Athan agreed.
Kayden informed his assistant that he’d be stepping out for a few minutes.
The two men walked out of the office silently. Kayden led the way to a quiet balcony, away from the rush of patients and staff. They stood opposite each other, quietly observing the people from below.
"Seems like you already know the reason why I came," Athan broke the silence. His voice was polite but indifferent.
"I know you didn’t come here for a check-up, or to say hello, Mr. Horace," Kayden remarked. "It must be because of Shawn."
Athan’s jaw clenched. Hearing Shawn’s name on his lips certainly irked him. "He mentioned about you. So, yes. I came here to tell you to stop approaching him. Whatever you had in between is in the past now. He’s already engaged to me."
Kayden chuckled. "I know it’s not yet official."
Athan glared at the doctor. If he knew about that, then he must have learned it from Shawn. How close could they be? What was the past Shawn was talking about? His jaw clenched with restrained anger. "We’re getting there."
Kayden looked ahead. He pocketed his hands on his coat and scoffed. "I doubt it. Shawn mentioned that you don’t have feelings for each other. Don’t you also think I still have hope?"
"Don’t push it," Athan’s immediate answer was filled with warning. He despised that Kayden was acting like it wasn’t a big deal, seemingly enjoying his reactions. He got more annoyed when the doctor turned to him with a grin.
"Chill, Mr. Horace. I understand. I already got rejected by him," Kayden put his hands up like he was surrendering. Athan was relieved. But then the doctor smirked. "But by looking at the way Shawn was stressing over your engagement, I don’t think he wanted it to proceed, and you’re not pushing on it either. Why?"
Athan glared at him. "That’s none of your business."
Kayden became serious in an instant. "You don’t want to tie him in a relationship he doesn’t like. But you’re not breaking the agreement, goes to say that you’re waiting for him to develop feelings for you. Aren’t we just the same? The only difference is you have something to take advantage of. So, who are you to tell me to stop approaching him?"
Kayden’s words hit the mark. Athan was slapped by the truth he’d been ignoring. Between the two of them, he was the selfish one. He held on to the agreement, knowing that Shawn did not like it. Even if his reason was to keep Shawn from getting married off to another alpha, it was wrong of him to take advantage of it.
But he did not want to give Kayden the satisfaction of seeing him distressed. He coldly remarked, "You’ve been rejected."
Kayden cocked his head. "Once won’t stop me. And I’m not like someone, waiting by the sidelines."
Athan could feel his patience reaching his limit. He clenched his fist and exhaled deeply. "You won’t get a chance," he said with finality.
Kayden’s expression went cold.
Athan turned his back to the doctor, and Kayden watched him. However, he stopped after only a few steps, looked back at Kayden, and remarked, "There’s another reason why I came here." Kayden raised his eyebrow. "I can’t get in touch with Knox since yesterday. I know you’re his doctor. He was seen here by his bodyguard, and he’s with someone. It must be your cousin. I should have hired more capable bodyguards for him, so your cousin can’t snatch him away easily."
Kayden chuckled at the pettiness and overprotectiveness. He could hear the other meaning. He walked to Athan as he spoke, "We don’t snatch, Mr. Horace. We simply take what’s rightfully ours." Athan’s jaw clenched. Veins popped on his neck. Kayden took something out of his wallet and patted Athan’s shoulder. "But if you’re looking for capable bodyguards, you should try checking this out."
He pushed the small business card on Athan’s chest before walking away. Athan watched him sharply. He glanced at the business card and cursed after reading the company’s name. Montgomery Security Agency.
Irritated, he crumpled the paper and pocketed the trash. As he walked along the hallway, he could hear Kayden’s laughter in his head. He scowled. Kayden’s family’s security agency is the best in the country, so Kayden was basically telling Athan that he won’t find a better one unacquainted with Azrael.
It was an insult—a provocation.
Later that afternoon, while Athan was preparing for their visit to the Horace Mansion, the news lit up with a shocking announcement. Azrael Del Valle had broken off his engagement with his fiancée.
The headlines were everywhere, sending ripples through society. To top it off, another news of him being spotted at the shopping district with someone came in. And even with that cap and mask, Athan could recognize his younger brother.
If he could, then his father could too.
It wasn’t long before he received a call from his father, searching for Knox. Athan couldn’t answer. Shawn sensed the tension in the air, so, instead of coming with him, he insisted on just staying at home and taking care of Knoa.
However, Chairman Horace asked for his grandson, and Athan had to come with him. Knowing that Shawn would only feel uncomfortable, he was left behind. Their father arranged a trip on the beach, using fishing as a reason but he knew the old man was just going to preach Knox about his involvement with Del Valle.
But instead of Knox arriving at the mansion, the one who was supposed to pick him up returned alone, breaking the news of Knox’s disappearance.
They were all alarmed and worried.
"Bring your nephew here right away."
Steve followed. Soon, Shawn was there, focused on tracking Knox using the room he used to stay in, in the mansion before. Seeing Athan frightened, Shawn was determined to find Knox. He locked himself in the room, tracing every last bit of Knox.
When Athan confirmed that the police won’t be of help to them immediately. He pulled a crumpled business card from his pocket and called the number on it. Soon after, a female voice answered him. He wasted no time and asked for Kayden immediately.
"Yes, this is Kayden speaking."
Athan did not expect that he’d be meeting the doctor soon again. And despite his reluctance to bring Shawn with him, Knox’s safety was his priority.
