Chapter 248: Chapter 6: Found you [2]
Shawn was too stunned to speak. His mouth gaped at the sight of the doctor’s appearance. But what did he say? Scouring the what? Shawn wondered.
Standing more than a foot taller than him, the doctor who was obviously an alpha, was like a perfect sculpture displayed in an art gallery made by the hands of God himself!
The man exuded an almost otherworldly allure, a blend of untamed charm and captivating mystery. His golden curls, pulled back into a casual, low bun, glint like strands of sunlight, casting a soft halo that only enhances his striking presence. The tiny rubber band holding his hair together adds a touch of effortless nonchalance, suggesting he’s just as comfortable saving lives as he is breaking hearts.
There was an air of rebellion about him, a subtle bad boy vibe in his piercing gaze, and the confident way he carried himself as if he was aware of what he could make someone feel with just his dominating presence.
With those sharp, deep, and expressive bluish eyes boring into him, Shawn felt like he was drawn into those ocean-colored orbs and drowned. He couldn’t look away, couldn’t even blink. It’s like the strange doctor who spouted nonsense glued his eyes on him.
The man looked more attractive than an omega, yet the strong smell of sandalwood lingering on him was enough proof that he was an alpha.
Someone that Shawn should be wary of, yet his eyes refused to abandon such a beauty.
"...name."
He blinked. He gawked at the man like a foreigner never understanding a local’s language and tilted his head to act cutely.
The doctor exhibited impatience, but he repeated his words anyway, "I asked if you remember my name."
Shawn’s head inclined even lower. His thoughts jumbled, remember his name? Is it a pick-up line? Is he hitting on me? Whoa, lucky!
He straightened his head and smiled widely. Then, he shook his head in response. The doctor’s expression darkened, contrary to what Shawn expected. The grip on his arm tightened. He expressed his discomfort at the man’s grasp, and thankfully, he loosened his grip but the hand did not retract.
"You don’t remember me..."
Shawn stiffened after glimpsing a flicker of regret in the doctor’s eyes. He whispered, "Have we met before?"
However, before the mysterious doctor could answer, a frantic nurse shouted, "Dr. Kayden! We need you in Ward E!"
The alpha doctor immediately let go of Shawn and exclaimed, "Don’t go anywhere!" then he dashed with the nurse.
Shawn was left dumbfounded. The words of the doctor echoed in his ears; you don’t remember me...
Shawn wondered. The doctor acted strangely familiar to him, yet he failed to recall him from his memory. He shrugged his shoulders and went back to the emergency ward.
On the other hand, Kayden tried to focus on his job first, despite his heart pounding at that fateful meeting.
An alpha patient was admitted after going berserk at the news of his mate dying from an accident. They had to sedate him, but it seemed that he woke up already and was causing mayhem again.
"He’s undergoing what we call ’bond trauma’, which is an extreme response to the severing of a mate bond unexpectedly. His mind is struggling to cope with the sudden loss, which is why he can’t fully process his omega’s death right now. This trauma creates an emotional overload that leads to his berserk episodes each time he wakes up," Kayden explained to the family of the patient.
"What should we do, doctor?"
"It’s essential to keep his environment as calm as possible and avoid overwhelming him with reminders of that tragedy right away. He needs a chance to reorient himself slowly. I also advised to build him a nest while he was recuperating at home. Gradually, the scent from his mate’s belongings will fade, and it might help with his coping. And, until he’s ready for more advanced healing, calming sedatives can keep his adrenaline levels stable."
"Thank you, doc."
Kayden nodded and let the nurse assist the family. He rushed back to the place where he met that omega, but he was no longer there. He walked around, hoping to see him nearby, but to no avail. He sighed frustratedly.
However, he was determined to find him even more than before.
Meanwhile, Shawn went back to Athan and Knoa. "Are we leaving?" he asked.
Knox nodded, "I thought you already went home."
"I can’t stay still at home," he answered as he put away the canned coffee he bought and helped Athan carry a few things. "You came here with your car, right? We’ll just wait at the entrance."
Athan answered, "Okay."
After the alpha left, Shawn immediately bowed to Knox and properly apologized. "I’m really sorry, Knox. I will understand if you kick me right away, and fire me. You don’t even have to pay me at all! You’ll probably say it’s not my fault, but I know I’m to blame. I’m so absorbed with my own problem, that I thought if I only watched over Knoa, it would be fine as long I didn’t let him out of my sight."
He was a fool for thinking that babies would be fine if left alone, for not noticing the child’s discomfort even when sleeping. Because Knoa wasn’t a child who always cried, he thought that taking care of him was easier.
Now, he couldn’t even look straight at Knox’s eyes for being negligent. He was confident to apply as his son’s nanny, only to be like that. Compared to Knox, he was a lot more immature and dependent, despite the one-year gap in their age.
"What exactly is the reason why you left home?"
Shawn paused for a moment. He scratched his temple at the unexpected question. A car stopped in front of them and the windows rolled, revealing Athan. Shawn took the opportunity and pretended like he forgot to answer due to the sudden interruption.
But truthfully, he was thinking, how am I supposed to tell him that I had a fight with my family because they were trying to marry me off to young master Athan and I don’t want to? Sure, Sir Athan is handsome and very kind and gentle, but he’s not my type~.
At the same time, a particular face resurfaced in his mind, followed by the words that commanded him to stay. He didn’t like it when he was told what to do, so he pouted and just watched the hospital grow smaller and smaller from the side mirror.
A thought dashed in his head, if I want to see you again, then I can just go visit the hospital, right, Dr. Kayden?
The drive back home was filled with silence. Knox seemed tired while Athan was focused. Shawn yawned, and at the corner of his eye, he saw Athan turned to him.
Then a soft whisper came. "Sleep."
Shawn shook his head lightly and rubbed his eyes. The hospital isn’t that far from Knox’s apartment anyway. However, when Athan took a different turn, he glanced at him and whispered back, "Where are we going?"
"They’ll be staying with me for the time being, until Knoa recovered," Athan replied.
"Ah..." he couldn’t voice out, what about me? Will it be fine for him to stay in Knox’s apartment even when they weren’t there?
"You’ll be staying with us too. Let’s just go to his unit tomorrow to get them some clothes, yours too," Athan remarked without glancing back.
Shawn fidgeted in his seat. Did Athan know that he ran away? Or did he think that he really got kicked out?
Athan briefly glanced at Shawn, wondering why he went silent. Seeing his troubled look, Athan thought that he didn’t like the idea of living with him, so he added, "You don’t have to stay with us if you don’t like it. I’ll—
"It’s not like that," Shawn quickly cut him off. He didn’t want to be misunderstood. "It’s just... I’m just wondering if you knew it already..."
Athan furrowed his brows in confusion. Shawn looked away and scratched the back of his head. He stole a glance at the backseat and sighed in relief to see Knox asleep while carrying Knoa in his arms.
He then admitted, "The truth is I ran away from home, but I told Knox otherwise. I was wondering which one you know. Either way, I guess it’s not that important—
"Steve told me that you sneaked out of your room by jumping from the window. He’s a bit concerned but sounded proud. I feel the same. Next time you plan to run away, just call me. I’ll sneak you in my pocket and take you away."
Shawn chuckled at Athan’s reply. "How big is your pocket?"
Athan grinned. But his face turned serious after, "If you’re having a problem with this engagement plan between us, I can tell my father to just forget the whole thing and—
"No. If you do that, I fear that my father will just find another prospective husband for me. Where can I find an engagement partner as patient as you, right?" Shawn joked.
Athan briefly glanced at him with a serious look and then looked ahead without saying anything. Shawn felt the atmosphere turned awkward. He wondered if he said something wrong. Did he not like the joke?
Then it hit him. He’s twenty-three now, and Athan’s twenty-eight years old. He’s at the age that he should be marrying already. But because of him...
Shit. I sounded so selfish. Shawn thought inwardly. He bit his lower lip, attempting to take back what he said, but Athan already pulled into the parking lot and declared that they had arrived.
