Chapter 228: Chapter 14: Who called?

The next day, it wasn’t an exaggeration to say that Killian’s face was like a panda, because of the dark circles under his eyes.

He couldn’t sleep that night after the deputy director dropped him off at his home. No, it wasn’t because of that.

It was because of the kiss!

His mind was replaying last night’s kiss over and over again and it kept him awake the whole night. Well, there was another reason why Killian was kept awake. It was because of his healthy junior, getting up again and again every time Killian would recall what happened.

He was like an animal in heat, but it wasn’t his heat at all. It’s just his...strong lustful desire toward his probable...fated partner.

"Should I bring that up to him? Maybe if he hears it, he’ll think it’s the reason why he felt enchanted by me...pfft. Enchanted..." Killian covered his mouth to hide his grin, but when he turned to the right and saw his reflection on the glass wall of an establishment, he suddenly felt stupid grinning like a fool alone.

He adjusted his collar and straightened his face. No way he’ll be coming to work with that foolish grin plastered on his face.

He was already at the front of the building when he saw Emily entering too. For some reason, his feet stopped moving and he just stood there until the female beta disappeared from his sight.

The guilt was still there, especially when last night had been so great for him...while his best friend was heartbroken.

"Good morning, Killian," Ingrid waved at him before she pointed at his desk. "The manager said that you should deliver the printed documents he put on your table to the deputy director’s office."

Before, Killian would grumble about why the manager couldn’t deliver it by himself, but now, he nodded enthusiastically. It was a chance to see his boss again. Although he wasn’t really sure how to look at him.

After they kissed, silence reigned over them...

’It’s getting cold. Let’s get you home,’ Nathaniel said after the awkward silence between them.

Killian just nodded, uncertain how to respond or what to say after that kiss. Their night ended just like that.

"Killian?" Ingrid’s voice snapped him from his reverie.

"Ah, yes. I will deliver it shortly after I check in," he replied.

"Okay."

After Ingrid left, he did what he had to do and grabbed the printed documents after. Killian headed to the office, but he stopped at the door because of his nervousness rising within him.

Every time the memory surfaced, his heart would race, and a blush would creep up his cheeks. It was surreal as if he couldn’t quite believe that it had actually happened. He felt elated, yet terribly embarrassed.

He took a deep breath and grabbed the handle, but before he could push it, someone already pulled it from the inside. Killian was already too late to let go, and he faceplanted on someone’s chest before he knew it.

"Ah!" Killian looked up, and his face paled upon seeing who it was.

Chairman ’Nathaniel Horace’ was looking down at him, supporting his slanted posture by holding his shoulders. "Are you okay?"

Before Killian could answer, someone from his side grabbed his waist and pulled him up, steadying his feet on the floor. Killian knew it was the deputy director, but he just couldn’t ignore that he shoved his face on the chairman’s chest, that he ignored his boss.

"I’m sorry, Mr. Chairman! I didn’t know you were behind the door!" Killian exclaimed nervously.

Steve cleared his throat. "That’s fine. No harm done. But next time, you should learn how to knock first before opening the door."

Killian embarrassedly nodded. "Yes, Mr. Chairman. Once again, I apologize. I will be careful from now on."

The chairman just patted his shoulder and walked out, leaving Nathaniel and Killian with each other. Killian sighed in relief.

"What are you doing here?" Nathaniel asked, clearly upset to be ignored.

Killian gulped. He avoided making eye contact after embarrassing himself in front of him, so he answered with his head lowered, "I brought the printed documents you requested from the manager, sir. Where should I put them?"

"Put them on my desk."

"Yes, sir."

Killian hurriedly placed the documents on the director’s desk and went back to the door, but the door was shut right before his eyes, and his boss stood before it while staring at him.

"Are you uncomfortable around me?" Nathaniel asked, taking a step forward.

Killian shook his head abruptly, but he still did not look up. "N—No, sir..."

"Then, why don’t you look at me?"

Displeasure was clearly evident in the alpha’s tone. Killian swallowed hard and finally met those bright green eyes.

Those sharp eyes that seemed to observe everything and were more commanding than the chairman, softened once they met Killian’s brown eyes.

On the other hand, Killian was startled when he realized how close his boss to him was already. They were just inches apart, and he still could smell the alpha’s overwhelming pheromones, so he was nervous that something—something in his middle region—would stand and shout ’present!’.

Cold sweat trickled down the omega’s back. His nervousness only flared when his boss wrapped his arms around his shoulders.

"S...Sir..." Killian stammered.

Nathaniel rested his head on Killian’s shoulders with a bump. He closed his eyes and murmured, "Stay like this for a moment."

Killian froze. Unconsciously, his hand shot up and landed on the back of the director’s head. Nathaniel flinched, but he didn’t say anything. In fact, he looked much more relaxed.

Killian wondered, "Sir...are you okay? Are you sick?"

Nathaniel was silent for a minute. Killian bravely caressed his head, wondering how his boss would react to that affectionate gesture.

The alpha sighed and finally answered. "I have a heightened sense of smell. My olfactory sensitivity is much stronger than average, allowing me to smell scents stronger than anyone could.

"What normal alphas could smell from someone, was like a storm of scents to me. It was distracting and caused me a lot of headaches. However, with you, I feel...at peace. You don’t smell like a walking omega who showered perfumes over them on top of their natural scents. You smell...nice. Just like soap..."

Killian was surprised to hear that, but the last words made him embarrassed. "That’s...uh, probably just the smell of my soap at home..."

"Not your scent?" Nathaniel asked, tilting his head a bit to the side to see Killian’s profile.

Killian nodded with a pout. He decided to be honest since the alpha told him something about himself. "I don’t have pheromones...or maybe I did, but the count was too low that my scent was almost...undetected."

"Is that so? I thought your scent smelled like lavender."

Killian scratched his head. "My soap has a lavender scent."

Nathaniel pulled Killian closer, burying his face in the crevice of his neck.

Killian flinched, but he didn’t complain despite the pounding of his heart. He no longer cared if the alpha heard it going crazy or not.

The silence that settled between them this time wasn’t as awkward as they shared last night. It was as if hugging each other like that...felt normal.

Suddenly, a phone rang. Nathaniel gently pushed Killian away and took out his phone from his pocket. He stiffened after reading the name on the screen.

"Sir, aren’t you going to answer?" Killian asked after a minute passed and his boss just stared at the phone.

Killian witnessed guilt flash in his boss’ eyes before he turned away and left the room, leaving Killian alone without any word at all.
