Chapter 152: Asking forgiveness under the rain
Chapter 152: Asking forgiveness under the rain
It was the second month of fall that another scandal arose involving the illegitimate child of the noble Horace and the infamous, cold, and domineering CEO of DV Group. The public showed interest, urging the media to them more about the story of the recessive omega and the dominant alpha.
"Isn’t their story like a soap opera? What do you think?" a pedestrian giggled as she stood at the bus stop waiting for his transport to arrive, all while busy scrolling on the screen of her phone. She nudged the other lady clinging to her side, the cold visibly getting on her judging from the way she clothed herself.
The cloud was visibly dark even in that morning. However, the impending rain did not dampen the mood of the two ladies squealing, seemingly excited at the untold story of the recessive omega who was the lowest in the hierarchy, and the dominant alpha whose prominence and influence had never staggered.
The lady who was clinging to the one scrolling the phone squealed, "I think it’s fate! I bet they’re fated mates who then got separated because the omega was nothing back then. But now, that his true identity was revealed, the alpha’s family decided to approve of him!"
"Fated mates? Do those things even exist?"
"Of course! Try searching for it and you’ll see many articles about it."
Their topic casually changed into the existence of fated mates and whatnot.
People passed by and randomly talked about celebrities, politics, and their daily lives, including one of those was their interest in the latest news.
Knox Arden and Azrael Del Valle became celebrities in an instant, and many media outlets wanted to cover their story, as well as get to know the kid born between them.
Nathaniel threw the newspaper on the center table furiously. He stood out of anger, cupped his nape, and sighed loudly. Geraldine picked the newspaper and wagged it, as though straightening the crumpled edges without putting much effort.
She scoffed at the bold headlines on the front page. A mocking smile formed on her lips. "Look at this son of yours, Nathaniel. He truly knows how to ruin our reputation. This is why I told you to just keep hidden until you die. You just grabbed a rock and smashed it on your head yourself."
Geraldine gracefully placed the newspaper back on the table and sat straight. Her slender arms with no sign of sagging even in her old age, crossed in her chest and she cocked her head slightly.
"You can still disown him, Nathaniel. I will applaud you if—
"Enough, Geraldine," Chairman Nathaniel spun abruptly and barked at the female alpha. He massaged his left temple and sighed to compose himself, only to fail when Steve, who was standing outside the door, knocked and asked to be let in. "Come in. What is it?"
Steve replied after bowing at them, "Young master Knox wished to see you, chairman."
Nathaniel’s face distorted. He turned away and gazed at the glass wall, his eyes showed no emotion and his voice was as cold as ice, "I do not wish to see him. Chase him away."
Steve hesitated. He met Geraldine’s narrowed eyes and he was forced to nod immediately. Truthfully, Steve already told Knox to go home and just come back once the master’s fury subsided. But Knox was adamant about meeting his father.
Steve went back to the entrance where Knox was denied entry. He shook his head sadly as soon as Knox’s face brightened with hope. But that hope was soon crushed by his answer.
Steve felt bad for the omega. He sighed and insisted, "Young master, I suggest you come back once the chairman calls for you himself."
Knox smiled bitterly, his voice faint, and it sounded like it was on the edge of shattering. "I wonder when will that be. I fear that he...won’t talk to me ever again. I bet he didn’t want to see me anymore."
Steve remained silent. How could he refute the young omega’s words, when he himself could tell the possibility after witnessing the chairman when the news was aired? Furious wasn’t even enough to describe what the chairman felt.
Nathaniel felt betrayed. And Steve could see the hurt in his eyes when he learned that Knox had been seeing Azrael behind his back, disregarding his warning and breaking their agreement. However, what’s done is done, so the chairman, aside from feeling tricked and betrayed, also felt helpless.
He could no longer trick the masses or bury that scandal to make people forget because, at the other end, someone was even celebrating and shouting it on the streets. The one who was responsible for all of this.
Nathaniel sighed once more. His old age was catching up to him. He felt tired of dealing with everything, that he dismissed Geraldine and just went back to his room.
Geraldine met Steve on the way. She stopped and asked, "Did he leave already?"
"No, madam. He’s still outside, waiting to be granted entry. I have to inform the chairman, so please excuse me," Steve politely answered.
Geraldine held back the secretary and said, "He already went back to his room. Let me tell it to him. You can go back to the office and do his work. He was really devastated with the ongoing events that his health isn’t getting better."
Steve stopped and worry flashed over his face, "Should I call the family doctor?"
Geraldine curtly swayed her hand, dismissing the thought. She reassuringly smiled at Steve and remarked, "No need. He only needs to rest. Let us not disturb him with another...unwanted guest."
Steve was hesitant after hearing the woman’s tone. After a few seconds, he sighed and decided to trust the madam, "Then, I’ll take it that the madam will inform the chairman about the young master."
"Oh, I will. Don’t worry," Geraldine answered and walked away.
Steve watched the back of the retreating female alpha to check where she was heading. After the woman turned to the corner leading to the master’s bedroom, Steve finally turned around and proceeded to the left wing where the offices were located.
Geraldine went to her husband’s bedroom to check if he was sleeping comfortably. She was satisfied after seeing the man lying on the bed with closed eyes, but the tip of his lips twitched so Geraldine knew he hadn’t fallen asleep yet.
Nathaniel felt his wife’s presence, but he didn’t open his eyes and just asked, "What is it?"
Geraldine walked to the bed and affectionately pulled the cover to her husband’s chest. She patted him and smiled, "I’m just worried that you were pushing yourself too hard. Don’t think too much about this scandal. What’s done is done. And there’s nothing we can do about it since your son seems to like that alpha anyway."
"You don’t understand what you’re saying, Geraldine. That alpha is the son of such a cruel man who kidnapped our son!" Nathaniel exclaimed, spouting words that made Geraldine upset and fume.
However, the female alpha decided to ignore his husband and continued, "I know very well. Rage Del Valle had a reputation, but if you’re going to say that his son is cut out in the same root as him, wouldn’t you think so too regarding ’your son’ as well?"
Geraldine pursed her lips. She readied herself to hear complaints, but Nathaniel was quiet. She stared at his husband and wondered what could be running on his mind. Did he agree with her claim?
After a moment of silence, the chairman spoke, "Leave. I’d like to rest."
His face looked solemn as though he remembered something that brought forlorn in his heart. His voice sounded so effete and disheartened, that Geraldine lost the will to argue. She lost her mood and granted her husband’s wish.
She completely remembered what Steve said, but she just went straight to her room, without ever mentioning the matter to her husband.
Not long after, outside her room, rain began to pour. It was still morning, probably just past nine, but the sky was pouring heavily already.
Geraldine felt relieved that she declined her daughter’s invitation to help with another charity program. She opened her phone and scrolled through her social networking sites. Her attention was caught when she saw a photo posted just a few minutes ago, on the official page of SmilEarth.
It was the man of the hot topics, feeding a disabled child while smiling widely at someone who seemed to be telling a joke. His long sleeves were folded up to half of his forearms; his right hand held the spoon, while the other hand was under the wheelchaired kid’s chin, catching any crumbs that might fall.
Both of them were smiling toward the same person, and in the picture, their eyes were sparkling and full of interest.
Geraldine raised her brows at the picture. She opened the comment section and was bombarded with supportive comments toward Azrael Del Valle and Knox Arden, as well as compliments about the alpha’s appearance and kind nature.
Then, she frowned when she read some negative comments about the Horaces, bringing up the issue of Athan harassing Azrael. She turned off the phone and stood by the glass wall, lifting the curtain, she was immediately frozen when she saw Knox still standing outside.
He found cover in one of the trees, but because most of the leaves had fallen, he ended up rained on anyway.
But even after seeing this, Geraldine just pulled the curtain down and walked away.
