Chapter 112: Conversations over the phone [2]
Azrael chuckled.
He continued, "He’s just three years old, right? But he’s so eloquent and smart already. So, he thinks I won’t know if he only calls me daddy when he’s with me? Tell him he should drop the ’Uncle Choco’ already or else I won’t buy him toys and cake.
"By the way, when is his birthday? If was conceived on that day, ah, no. Of course, it was because of that day. It was summer then, which means his birthday is around spring. Which month exactly?"
Knox parted his lips to answer, but Azrael didn’t stop there.
"I’d like to plan for his fourth birthday already. Let’s buy an amusement park and hold the party there. Or, we can go rent the whole Oceanic Park for a whole week and invite his friends. He goes to school, right? The last time I saw him he was carrying a cute backpack full of candies..."
Knox closed his eyes as Azrael kept talking.
He didn’t want to break his super early birthday planning, so he just answered in his mind, ’Sure. Let’s do that. Knoa will have so much fun in an amusement park. He likes watching the sea as well. Right, he wanted to visit the beach, so maybe we can go there too, the three of us...’
"Knox...are you listening?"
Azrael’s voice entered his ears. Knox answered as he opened his eyes, "Mm. You can do that. What else do you want to do with him?"
Surprisingly, he calmed down just by listening to Azrael’s voice. He sounded childish somehow, and it made Knox imagine his younger self. Although what he pictured was only Knoa with grey eyes, and a grumpy look while glaring at his servants, or maybe pointing at them to do this and that.
Azrael responded, "What else? Well, I haven’t thought about it. What else do parents do with their children? I played around until I was five, and then after that, I started going to school and had to stay at home after school for tutoring.
"I would get dragged with my old man watching him do business and learn from it..." his voice lowered and soon stopped as he realized mentioning his father. Knox hadn’t brought it yet, so he wasn’t sure how.
Azrael covered his forehead with his arms, as he looked at the ceiling, his excited demeanor vanishing and replaced with shame.
Luis noticed his boss’ mood dampened. He stopped wondering and just excused himself silently. He walked out the door but just stood with the other guards. Once raised his brows at him, so Luis explained, "He was just talking with someone important. Let’s not bother him."
The guard peeked inside first before he went back to his position.
Azrael cleared his throat and spoke again, "Anyway, I have to search or read books about parenting now. I don’t hear him anymore, is he gone?"
Knox sniffled. He answered after, "No, he’s playing with his toys."
Azrael scrunched his face and asked, "Are you crying?"
Knox, "...I had a fever before, the cold hasn’t gone away yet," he faked a cough to support his lie.
Although he was shocked and panicked after Azrael asked again, "Can I video call?"
Knox was hesitant. He turned to the glass wall to check his visage. His countenance wasn’t good. His complexion was still pale and his eyes were puffy due to crying overnight after deciding to temporarily stay away from Azrael.
On top of that, he just woke up, so his face was still a bit oily and his hair was disheveled.
Azrael, "Knox?"
Knox sighed. He mumbled against the phone, "Y-You can."
Azrael’s face brightened. He got up from the bed and locked the door, which only gained the attention of his secretary and the guards outside. He put up his thumb finger and sliced it passed his neck, indicating that anyone who dared enter would die.
He sat on the couch and eagerly waited for Knox to open the camera. Knox, on the other hand, walked to the bed and gave the phone to Knoa.
The kid let go of his toys and took the phone with both hands. On the screen displayed was his father, staring back at Knoa with longing.
"Ooh~ Uncle—eh, hehe, Daddy~ where’s my cake now?" Knoa grinned widely, waving at the older guy with his little chubby fingers.
Azrael thought as he saw those wriggly and plumpy digits, ’No wonder he looks plumpy. He doesn’t forget when it comes to food...’
He wiped the goofy grin on his lips and answered fondly, "I’ll give it to you soon, don’t worry. When we meet, I’ll give you lots of kisses, hugs, and cakes. How about that?"
"That sounds good! I like hugs too...but kisses, only Papa and Uncle Shun are allowed to kiss Knoa! So, no kisses," Knoa replied.
Knox stifled laughter after seeing Azrael frown. His displeased face was very similar to Knoa’s. A warm feeling swelled in his heart. It was fulfilling and complete happiness seeing the father and son converse.
He needs to explain it to Knoa soon. So, he’d let Azrael kiss him.
Azrael’s frown didn’t just root from his adorable son’s rejection. He was sulking because Knox wasn’t in the picture. He wanted to see him, even more so after hanging up on him on their last conversation.
It weighed in his mind. He wanted to hear the reason for the omega’s actions. But after waking up from his opened head wound after trying to tackle all the guards, he calmed and tried to think why Knox chose to hide his son from him.
He was hurt, yes, but there was a big hole that appeared in his system, an empty one that soon filled with regret. If he hadn’t acted like an as*hole back then, maybe Knox wouldn’t run away, then he could have seen his stomach grow, he could have gotten everything he craved for and helped him climb down the stairs or picked up things he dropped.
Going to check-ups, buying baby clothes, and reading children’s stories on his stomach. Holding his hands while he delivered, and being the first person to carry and see their son the moment he was born.
Those thoughts drowned him when he lay on the hospital bed. Just imagining that someone had done that role to Knox ruined his mood.
The three years of his child’s life that he missed, he wanted to see it. How Knoa was when he first walked, talked, picked up his first thing, or completed his first task.
All of that was deprived of him.
