Chapter 266: Significance Of The Borders
When Samantha stepped out of the changing room to meet the two women who waited for her, her mischievous friend had noticed the change in her walking step, and that made Lucy stand up from the chair she was sitting on. A sly grin quickly spread across her pretty face as she exchanged knowing looks with Madeline, and she said.
"You know, His Majesty might not have broken the bed yet, but he certainly broke his wife, and it is so easy to tell. I must say, I knew his Majesty possessed great stamina, and from how he lifted you last night, I believed I wouldn’t see you step out of your chamber today." Lucy spoke her thoughts, as if she had hoped to hear that the Queen will not be leaving her chambers for a few days.
Samantha, who had not expected such a thing to come out of Lucy’s mouth, was made to stop in her unusual gait. Lucy was not the type to keep quiet, even in front of others, and now that she had been caught in this predicament, Lucy will stop at nothing to give her an earful concerning what happened last night. Not to mention, but she was saying it loud enough for Madeline to hear as well.
"Lucy..."
"We’re all adults here, don’t be a prude and tell us! Was it rough? Did you enjoy it? Oh I can see His Majesty’s claim all over you. Is that a love bite? Did he make you bring out your... inner obscenity?"
"Lucy!"
"Spare the newlywed, her face is red as it is. If you keep this up she might disappear from here." Madeline, who couldn’t hold back a light chuckle at Lucy’s deliberate teasing, decided to help Samantha out before she blushed to no end, but Lucy simply shrugged and found absolutely nothing wrong in her inquiries.
"What? I’m a girl who is innocently curious." She led Samantha towards the dressing table and helped her take her seat. "She’ll need to present herself before the court today, and she has to step out walking like this. That is good, that way, everyone will be clear of His Majesty, and they will know the real Queen has arrived."
Madeline quietly shook her head with an unrestrained smile. Lucy was no different from Samantha, as they both possessed delicate features, but she was a brown-skinned beauty. She had the innocent face of a baby, that one who does not know her well, will be stunned if she revealed her true attitude to them.
"Somehow I feel sorry for your future husband." Samantha teased, and Lucy simply flipped her hair to the back before saying.
"My future husband will have to master the art of self control, it won’t be easy to overlook this package. Besides, I’m a hopeless romantic with a bitchy side, not every man is capable of handling that."
"And you think His Majesty Duncan can handle ’this package’?" Samantha quoted teasingly, and Lucy huffed with folded arms.
"He’ll learn."
Soon enough, there was a knock on the door, interrupting their girly chat, and when Lucy stepped aside to answer who was knocking, she spoke with the female servant who handed her an envelope. Closing the door, she returned to Samantha who had looked in her direction to see she was clutching against the envelope in her dainty hands.
"What is it?"
"I don’t know, she said it was sent from the borders." Lucy let her know, handing the letter to Samantha who received it, and at the mention of ’borders’ a smile immediately brightened her expression. Opening the envelope and bringing out the parchment that had been neatly placed inside, she knew, from the moment she noticed the calligraphy, that it had to be from her brother.
"It’s a letter from Maurice." She told them before proceeding to read the content in her head. When she was done, she let out a breath of relief and folded the letter back, keeping it inside the envelope.
"He says they arrived safely at the borders, it took them all night, but they made it."
"That is good to hear." Said Madeline, "the borders can be hectic as it is the wall that shields the kingdom. I was surprised and impressed when I learnt of Helena’s role. With time, I believe more women will be allowed to fight for their Kingdom. Helena is the starting progress"
"I believe so too." Lucy concurred to Madeline’s words, "the only time I went through the border was my first time coming into GreenHollow. My memories of the borders are not vivid, but I do remember seeing someone stand high above the barrier, he used an instrument, a telescope to view ahead for enemies. The soldiers there are frighteningly alert."
"They are the ones who send out warning signals, no?" Asked Samantha, who was only starting to learn more about the significance of the borders, and Lucy nodded.
"It depends. A guard told me they had to face off the enemies once they got close, and the signals are sent when they sense they might trespass the kingdom. The borders are weaponly loaded, it is extremely difficult to break in, but not entirely impossible. I had seen it myself, and it is satisfyingly secured. Maurice will do fine, aside from the heavy daily training, he should fare well on his own."
Lucy finished getting Samantha ready to meet the court. When she stood up, she tried not to walk unusually since she will be facing the Ministers and Courtiers, and whoever she might meet there. If she had known about this introduction before the court, she wouldn’t have done what she did with Ivan today, and that man! He knew about the court but never told her about it!
As much as she tried to feel angry about it, she could not. How could she? The memories of the night were enough to leave her feeling red all over, and she smiled shyly at the recollection of the sweet words he always called her. They were both together now, and she has never felt happier.
"Can you walk?" Lucy asked Samantha who took in the poised stance she had been taught in her etiquette lessons. She took each step gracefully, offering a curt smile, but no one except her would understand what she was seriously going through beneath her legs.
"You’ll do fine." Madeline’s smile was an encouragement to Sam’s heart.
It wasn’t too long before someone from the court came to take Samantha away, leaving behind Madeline and Lucy who had started talking amongst themselves. Another knock on the door came in, and when Lucy opened the door, a maid had informed her that there was someone here to see her.
"Me?" Lucy inquired, wondering who else would ask for her, and when she stepped out completely from the Boudoir, Herbert was waiting on her at the top of the stairs.
"Herbert?"
Madeline, who had exited the Boudoir to quickly check on her son, said her goodbyes to Lucy before going down the stairs.
"They said you needed to see me?" She inquired from Herbert who nodded.
"His Majesty, Duncan seeks your presence in his Piano chamber." He informed.
