Bride To His Darkness
Chapter 179: Truth Of The Night

Chapter 179: Truth Of The Night

Did her ears hear right or did she just imagine she heard what she thinks she might have heard? No! She must have heard it wrongly, or maybe she misinterpreted her words and there could be some misunderstanding, but, no matter how hard she tried to find ways to make her see Lady Agathe’s confession in a different light, it was of no use because horrifically, she had heard her say she was the cause of the late Queen Mother’s death!

Samantha could hardly get her mind to think, the words of Lady Agathe were the only thing echoing through her brain like an alarm that refuses to go off in the morning. When she bursted out through the door, Samantha glanced at both ways before hastily picking the right and continuing on her heels without stopping in her tracks, or even daring to look back. The path was desolated, devoid of any presence, and Samantha had forgotten exactly which route led to the main entrance of the Palace.

Of all times?!!!

She hardly knew if the vampiress was coming after her or not, but she knew she had to get out of this damn Palace before she loses her life in the hands of the vampiress. She tried to scream out, to attract any form of attention, but she was unable to do so as the shock had left her throat numb.

Did Lady Agathe really murder the Queen Mother?! Just thinking about it made her body tremble, her heart shook in apprehension, but how was that supposed to even be possible?! Lady Agathe was the calm one amongst the Chevalier family, she was both considerate and never failed to offer help so how is this...or has everything up to this point been nothing but a charade??

"Mhmn..!!!" Samantha’s eyelids alarmingly snapped wide when a hand swiftly covered her mouth from behind, stopping her in her gait, and before she could react, the door beside her was being opened, whilst she was shoved inside, making her fall hard to the ground. When she turned her head to see who had grabbed her so roughly, Lady Agathe was locking the door with the keys, and when she turned around to look at the servant who skittered back in fear, her apprehension evident in her eyes, Lady Agathe’s smile turned slightly cunning as she pulled out a dagger from the belt of her dress.

"How sad, I was beginning to like you, but trust me my dear, it pains me that I’ll have to stain my hands with blood now that you know my secret." She admitted, and Samantha shook her head in disbelief while continuously backing away, unable to stand up as the tremor of what she just heard had left her nerves feeling torpid.

"You... you killed the Queen Mother?!!"

"So? She was bound to die sooner or later." Lady Agathe’s tone held no remorse, she made it obvious that she didn’t consider her actions that significant. Samantha’s eyes narrowed as she shook her head, and she was too dumb-stricken by Lady Agathe’s confession to think properly. Infact, she would never have guessed that the vampiress was capable of doing something so despicably abominable.

"Why... Why would you do something like that? She was your family!" Samantha found herself yelling at the vampiress who toyed with the sharpened dagger in her hand. "You... you cried most when she died, you were the comfort of the family, the pillar they felt they could hold on to but all this freaking time... you were the one responsible for her demise?? How could you act so cruel to your own Mother-in-law??"

"Oh spare me the speech, I didn’t drag you in here to listen to whatever boring nonsense you have to say to me." She silenced Samantha while pointing the sharpened dagger at her face, her once smiling expression now twisted in disdain. "You don’t know me, so you have no reason to judge my actions. You have no idea what I had to endure by being beside that old woman who refused to die already. You know, I kept her company most of the time, we drank tea together, had wonderful chats in her purple chamber while watching the serene sky, but you see, all of that was just so I could earn her trust, and when I got what I needed, I made sure the servant who always watched her sleep and serves her tea added poison to whatever liquid she was given."

There was a sinister twinkle in her eyes as she said, "the poison wasn’t something that could take effect in one day, so I made sure she was served tea every morning, and she always drank it, not knowing she was drinking the tea I had laced with poison specially for her. The effects began to show after a few days till she fell ill, and do you know what? Ivan’s hunting trip made it the perfect time to fully get rid of her. I snuck into her room that very night, suffocated her with a pillow, but to make it seem like she died on her own, I had her tied to the ceiling, so that the next day, we could all witness the memorial sight together."

She laughed as though she just said something funny. "You need to see the look on everyone’s faces that day, I didn’t know how much the family valued the Queen Mother until her death day."

Lady Agathe tsked like she recalled something sad, "I should have been a lot more considerate back then, who knew my actions would end up reopening painful memories for Ivan, but I had to do what I had to do." Her eyes returned to Samantha who was still sitting on the floor, dazed and bewildered. Lady Agathe never really considered the girl to be a burden for her, in fact she had seen the girl to be useful in her quest for revenge, but now that she was aware of her dark secrets, there is absolutely no way she could let her go alive, but before bringing tears to the eyes of the Chevalier family, she would like to share her pain as well.

"That night, the servant who ran away the next morning," she reminded Samantha of the servant Albert had claimed to have fled from the Palace. "I threatened her to leave the Palace before anyone else noticed she was gone, she had been an eye witness to my actions and there was no considering letting her stay for another second, so I threatened her to leave or else she would have to carry the blame of the Queen Mother’s death. While she believed her life would be spared, I had someone waiting in the bushes to assassinate her, and I gave him the bodkin arrows that would leave the Chevalier family doubting the royal Fletcher who turned out to be a very big fool."

"What does... What does that hunter in the cell have to do with any of this?" Samantha inquired, using it as a form of distraction to keep Lady Agathe busy while she tried to think of a quick plan that could get her out of here. She tried calling on her vines but they weren’t yielding to her powers.

"You see my dear, the same way you caught me revealing my deeds, that snoopy hunter had caught me hanging the Queen Mother. Aren’t I smart? When I found him disguised as a hunter, I sent someone dressed as a hunter to kill the maiden, and I made sure he lingered a little longer for the guards to have a sneak peek of him, and of course the arrow, the arrow led Ivan to the royal Fletcher, and if faith wasn’t on my side, the same hunter had disguised himself as a royal Fletcher to get into the Palace, so you see, he became the prime suspect while all I had to do was shed some tears and pretend to the woman which I claimed to be."

All the time she kept speaking, it didn’t sound like she felt sorry in the slightest. They had made brief encounters in the Palace, and during those times, she was made to believe that this vampiress was different, but unfortunately, her true colors were being revealed in broad daylight! She felt more sorry for Prince Alistair and Tobias who are clearly unaware of the type of Mother they had.

"Why... why would you do something like that to your own family?" Samantha wasn’t sure how many times she had repeated this, but judging from the frown that enveloped Lady Agathe’s features, it was quite obvious she didn’t like being asked this question.

"Wasn’t I making it a simple guess? Well if you need me to be more elaborate about my reasons, It’s because I hate the Chevalier family!" Something dark flashed in her crimson eyes, "I’ve always hated this family since the day my marriage with Abdiel was arranged. Back in Vesunard, middle rank vampires are treated like dirt that the higher ones could trample on, and I, I was no different from a middle-rank who was forced to face the harshness of our society. Ivan’s Grandfather was that type of man who saw people as filth, be it his own kind or a human. My Father owed something to the royalty, so you see I wasn’t married to Abdiel by choice, I was sold to him, it was a rule that existed in the past till Muzan changed it. Back then, lower rank vampires could be considered slaves. Ivan’s Grandfather made us feel that way, useless and rubbished. Power, having a strong family bloodline was the only thing that mattered in Vesunard, and when he humiliated my family during the day they were meant to give me out to Abdiel, no one stood up for them even though they did nothing but abide by their selfish rules. None! So when he died, I was happy, I was the happiest person in the whole Kingdom, but even then, I decided to get my revenge on the whole Chevalier family for daring to see me as a tool."

She moved from where she was standing to face the mirror, admiring her ageless face that made her no different from a youthful woman.

"You see I never planned on marrying Abdiel, I had my eyes set on Muzan because why? He was going to be King, and king’s hold the power, but do you know what happened? Carina happened! And I was left with no other choice but to be with Abdiel. Carina always flaunted her royalty because she was born from a powerful bloodline. I can’t count how many times she looked down on me in this Palace, but I felt happy when Muzan ended up bringing the woman he originally loved to the Palace, and that was when my act one began." She lifted her index finger before turning around to look at Samantha.

"I became good friends with Ivan’s mother, she was a lovely woman inside and out, but I didn’t like her either cause she kept getting in the way of my plans. I wanted to turn the whole family against themselves, so I started with my first act, and I’m sorry to say this to you now but your Father had to be my pawn in this game unfortunately."

"W.. what?" Samantha blinked in disbelief when her Father was mentioned. Her heart rate slowed immensely when the vampiress nodded her head.

"Muzan’s death that night didn’t happen because of your Father, your Father was innocent from the beginning but... my plans were more important than his life so I did what I had to do. I made him go into the orb room that night, claiming that Muzan was under attack. Your Father cared for Muzan, so he went in without thinking, and that’s when I moved on to the next part of my plan. I made up an excuse to Ivan that his Father needed to see him urgently, back then, Ivan was such a sweet, naive, gullible child, so he went in without thinking, and do you know what happened after that, he saw your Father pulling out the dagger that had been used to stab Muzan. Ivan was a child. What else could he have made from the scene after witnessing something like that, he is bound to blame your Father for his own Father’s death, but what struck the cord was when your Father took the Orb and fled."

"You knew all this time that my Father was innocent of the accusation? You used him??" Samantha could feel tears well up in her eyes after connecting the dots in her head. It was quite obvious that the majority of the vampires were not happy with King Muzan taking a human as his special advisor, and that had been a trick card for Lady Agathe, cause she knew if he somehow got into trouble, getting rid of him wouldn’t be much of a problem.

The vision she had seen in the Orb room suddenly resurfaced in her head, and her pupils dilated in recognition. The vision of the young blurry woman... was that... was that the vampiress???

"Of course I knew your Father was innocent! I witnessed it," Lady Agathe uttered, confirming her suspicion. "And you’d be surprised if I told you who murdered the King."

"Who?"

"Aren’t you eager? You’ll end up dying anyway so I can at least share this with you so you can take it to your grave." She smiled, "no one killed Muzan on that fateful night, he killed himself, actually, he sacrificed his life in exchange for a wish he made."
