Chapter 113: 099 The ones who will lose are the weak_7
That scene is something Atlas Hallow could never forget.
At that time, he was drowning in guilt, after all, this girl simply loved him without reservation and gave herself completely, yet ended up in such a state, lying under the white blanket, she seemed so transparent as if she could disappear at any moment.
She said she wanted a child, she said she had frozen her eggs long ago because when they were together, she took contraceptives, and he remembered her crying while saying, "I’m afraid if I take too many pills, I won’t be able to have children later. I’ve frozen my eggs. Atlas, I love you, so this is what I deserve. I don’t blame you, but could you give me a child, a child of ours?"
In such a situation, he couldn’t refuse her.
To elaborate, Hailey Hill is a pitiable woman; her parents only ever demanded from her, while Charlotte Miller was much luckier.
Both being women, Hailey would never dare to use a harsh tone when speaking to him, but Charlotte, despite being small, had quite a temper. Though timid around him, she couldn’t always hide her anger at times.
Life is never perfect, yet he happened to love the clever girl who would get angry at him, attract admirers, and occasionally be capricious.
The past was somewhat chaotic, yet he quickened his pace, after all, this concerned a human life, and this woman had complex entanglements with him that could not be explained clearly.
"Sir, the doctor hasn’t come out yet, they said she’s lost a lot of blood but it’s still very dangerous," the driver said nervously. Luckily, they had arrived a bit earlier, otherwise, it could have been fatal.
Atlas Hallow felt his pockets, only to realize that smoking was not allowed in this hospital.
He smokes very little now because Charlotte said she doesn’t like the smell of smoke and would complain when kissed.
But in the past, Hailey was so obedient, accommodating his temperament, yet he wanted to indulge Charlotte.
She shouldn’t have to endure this pain. He knew marrying another woman, having a child with someone else’s womb, was all cruel to Hailey, yet she still quietly hid in a corner.
It was all his fault, damn it...
Atlas Hallow leaned against the emergency room wall, closing his eyes to bury all his pain deep within.
This was what he deserved; he had given all his affection and love to another woman, but what about the woman lying here enduring all this suffering for him?
How could he make up for the imperfections in her life?
Hailey Hill was incredibly smart; she understood Atlas Hallow, she knew how to make him feel the most guilty and pained.
Such a man, with his achievements, his status, his pride, would not allow himself to be indebted to others.
So, he would repay it.
Just let things be, for it’s already desperation, how else would he know unless he takes one more gamble?
As her consciousness gradually returned, Hailey Hill saw a whole white world.
"Am I already dead? Is this heaven..." Her voice was weak and faint, even opening her eyes was a struggle, and her wrist ached as if it had been cut.
Atlas Hallow looked at Hailey Hill lying on the white sheets, her face pale as if it had merged with the sheets, her thin and weak body beneath the covers seemed nonexistent, overlapping with that moment many years ago.
He reached out and gently stroked Hailey’s face; her skin was cold and frail, like ashes burned by fire, disappearing with a mere touch.
"Hailey, why did you have to do this? Do you want me to feel guilty for the rest of my life?" Atlas Hallow’s voice was deep and hoarse, rising into the air, full of guilt and pain.
"Atlas, why did you save me? In fact, I’d be happier dead. I’ve heard that after a person dies, they can become many things, perhaps the wind, or a butterfly, or something else, and then I could often see you." Perhaps saying these words exhausted the last of her strength, Hailey Hill gasped for breath, her face as pale as paper, closing her eyes.
Atlas Hallow’s heart trembled; there was a woman who was devoted to him, yet he couldn’t repay her love, so at the very least, he should cherish her more.
"Promise me not to do anything foolish; if you want to see me, just tell me." Every promise was painful, but as a man, he couldn’t break his word; perhaps this was truly fate playing tricks.
This stab, as painful as it was, was worth it. Everyone thought Atlas Hallow was strict and unfeeling, but Hailey Hill knew he was a man with principles; when he said it, he would do it.
No matter how beautiful Charlotte Miller was, she would always lose, because in front of Charlotte, she was a weaker person.
"I won’t trouble you anymore, Atlas. You should go tend to your affairs; I... I can hire a nurse." Her reluctance to let go while saying she could hire a nurse indicated she had no relatives or friends to take care of her; at this moment, Atlas Hallow could not possibly leave.
"Get some rest, I have nothing much going on today, I can stay with you." Atlas Hallow pulled up a chair and sat beside her, saying nothing more, letting the sunlight slowly transition from bright to dim.
Today, there really was nothing urgent; today he could have spent the whole day with Charlotte, lounging on the couch in the apartment, drinking wine and watching movies, kisses and embraces within easy reach, but he couldn’t, he could only stay in this hospital room, observing all the paleness and spending the day here.
And Hailey Hill wasn’t the only one who attempted suicide.
