Chapter 614: Too lame to agree.

"How is she, doctor?" Aiden asked somberly when he saw the doctor finally turn to face them.

On the bed, Selene was lying still, looking weaker than before. Arwen’s brows knitted in a frown as she took in the sight.

If she hadn’t seen Selene collapse with her own eyes, she might have doubted it. But watching her fall so hard onto the floor had left no room for disbelief.

"Ms. Martin is fine, Mr. Winslow," the doctor said calmly. "It’s just fatigue. Her body gave in under accumulated stress. She will recover after some rest."

Aiden nodded, though the tight crease between his brows didn’t ease.

The doctor gave Selene one last glance before adding, "She should wake up soon. Rest assured. I will take my leave."

Aiden nodded again as Mr. Jones stepped forward to escort the doctor out.

"You embarrassed her," Arwen finally said when they were alone. Her tone was even, not accusing, but carrying a quiet reproach. "You shouldn’t have spoken to her like that. Didn’t you say that you owe her?"

"Owing her doesn’t mean I should lie about things," he replied, his voice low, the frown still carved between his brows.

Arwen studied his face, and for a moment, her own expression softened. She let out a small sigh and stepped closer to him. Gently, she reached up and brushed her fingers against his forehead.

"Stop frowning," she murmured. "You will age faster."

He didn’t react, and she hesitated, lowering her hand. "I didn’t ask you to lie. It’s just that ..."

She paused, feeling stuck. Because no matter how she tried to phrase it. There was no way to speak the truth without hurting someone who refused to hear it.

In the end, she only pressed her lips into a She paused, feeling stuck. Although she put it that way, there seemed no way to speak the truth without hurting someone who was not willing to hear it.

In the end, she only pressed her lips in a thin line, then drew in a breath and quietly changed the subject.

"She is like this," she said softly. "Sending her back wouldn’t be the right thing. Let her rest here."

Aiden looked at her in silence, his gaze searching her eyes. For a moment, it felt like he was about to say something, but he held it back. Instead, he nodded.

"Let’s send her back tomorrow," he said, his voice as firm as his decision.

"Tomorrow?" she asked, her eyes getting a little smaller at him.

When he arched his brow at her, she shrugged at nothing in particular. Turning, she glanced at Selene. The woman looked fragile in sleep, a stark contrast to how she was when she was awake. "No, I mean ... it feels like you don’t want to keep her around."

Aiden stared at her for a long moment. She wasn’t looking at him; her eyes were fixed on Selene.

"I don’t," he replied bluntly.

Arwen turned to look at him. She waited for him to speak further, but he didn’t. He didn’t explain his reason. She thought to ask him, but just then Aiden’s phone rang.

"I will take this," he said, and she nodded to him.

He then turned and walked out of the room. Arwen stayed there. She turned back to look at Selene. Seeing her sleep, she walked forward to adjust her sheets a little.

She was about to back away when suddenly Selene opened her eyes. The movement wasn’t abrupt, but still, it felt like she had woken up from a dream ... a nightmare.

Arwen was caught off guard. But she recovered from it and took a small step back. "How are you feeling now?" she asked, carefully. "You fainted earlier. The doctor said that you are fine, but you fell a bit hard on the floor. Are you feeling pain anywhere?"

Selene stared at her. She didn’t speak immediately; instead, her gaze stayed on Arwen as if noting something.

Arwen didn’t understand what it was. But her gaze like that made her feel weird. "Ms. Martin?" she called again.

But before she could add anything, Selene’s lips moved, and she finally spoke.

"Please return him to me."

Arwen’s brows tugged in a frown. That voice was low, and she barely heard anything. "What?" she asked, confused. She then leaned forward, closer to her. "I couldn’t hear you. What did you say?"

Selene’s fingers fisted the sheet, but she repeated it again, her voice still a little weak. "Return Aiden to me, please. Return him to me, Arwen."

The frown between Arwen’s brows deepened. She might not have heard her at first, but up at such close proximity, she heard her too clearly.

"Ms. Martin, I guess your sickness has made you lose your sanity. Rest well and recover. I am sure you will get better." With that, she turned on her heels to leave.

However, just as she turned, Selene’s voice halted her again.

"Arwen!" she called. "I love him. And it’s just him I can love. Please."

Arwen’s fingers tightened. But keeping her calm at her best, she turned to look back. Loving someone isn’t a reason. I could love heaven, but I can’t go and ask the angels to give it to me. And even if I do, they wouldn’t give it to me, would they?"

"..."

"Ms. Martin, I told you you aren’t well. People do talk absurdly in situations like yours. Please rest and recover. I won’t take your words as offence today, but the next time ..." She paused, her eyes sharp, warning clear in her gaze. "I might not be kind. So, recover well."

Selene looked at her. "You can’t ask an angel for heaven, but I can ask him for you. Angel won’t give you heaven because it belongs to them, but you can give me Aiden because —"

"Aiden is my husband. He doesn’t belong to me, but ... he is mine, Ms. Martin." Her words were charged with raw possessiveness. "The same way I am his. I won’t give him to you even if you beg me with your life. Your reasons are still too lame to agree."
