Chapter 97: Stepmother
Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Stepmother
Mike, however, had a dark face as he said,
"Aurora, after getting discharged, you will have to kneel in front of the mansion for the next 20 hours!"
Aurora rubbed her temple. She wanted to lash out at Mike, but her instinct told her to stay quiet.
The most pressing matter for now was to get a general idea of what was happening.
From the novels she had read before, Aurora understood one thing.
Maybe she has transmigrated to a parallel world or has been reborn in the future.
Aurora’s heart ached.
So was she dead?
Then what about her family members? What was their fate in the end? Did they escape from their fate?
Maybe...maybe she was transmigrated to this world to complete some mission?
As long as she completes the mission, maybe she could return...
Aurora was so lost in thought that she didn’t notice Mike’s increasingly darkening face.
"How dare you ignore me!"
His thunderous voice jolted Aurora back to reality. Aurora closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and said,
"I will see."
Mike’s face turned red, and he slapped Aurora on her face.
Bzzzz.
Aurora’s head snapped to the side, the sharp sting of the slap reverberating through her skull.
A metallic taste filled her mouth, and she realized she had bitten the inside of her cheek.
She slowly turned her gaze back to Mike, her gray eyes dark and unreadable.
For a moment, the room was completely silent.
The doctors and nurses, who had been pretending not to hear the conversation, now looked tense.
The young female doctor’s hand twitched as if she wanted to step in but knew she couldn’t.
Aurora clenched her fists under the bedsheets.
If this truly was a novel-like situation, then Mike was playing the role of the oppressive father figure who controlled her life.
Slowly, she turned toward him and kicked him hard on his stomach.
Her strength was nothing compared to Mike’s, but due to how unexpected it was for Mike, he fell.
Mike hit the ground with a heavy thud, his expression shifting from shock to rage. The room went dead silent.
Aurora ignored the sting in her cheek and slowly sat up.
The nurses gasped, and the young female doctor instinctively took a step forward as if ready to restrain her.
Mike gritted his teeth, his face twisted with fury.
"You dare—"
Aurora cut him off, her voice eerily calm.
"Yes, I dare."
She swung her legs over the side of the hospital bed, her bare feet touching the cold floor.
"If you’re going to hit me," she continued, tilting her head, "then you’d better be ready for me to hit back."
As for the morality that one shouldn’t hit their parents...
What morality? Aurora lacked morality, and she knew it.
If she had morality, she wouldn’t have lied to her friends about her financial situation.
If someone other than her parents hit her, she was taught to hit them back.
Not to mention, even from a moral point of view, a father who can hit his sick daughter and demand her to kneel for 20 hours just after getting discharged wasn’t great either.
Mike struggled to sit up, his breathing ragged. He wasn’t used to being challenged.
His hands trembled with barely contained rage as he pushed himself up.
The veins in his forehead pulsed, his blue eyes darkening with fury.
"You ungrateful wretch!" he spat, his voice low and dangerous.
Aurora remained unfazed.
She had no memories of this body’s past, but one thing was clear—this man was not someone she needed to respect.
Mike gritted his teeth and shouted,
"I will make you pay! Just you see!"
With that, he stormed off.
Aurora rolled her eyes and turned toward the doctors,
"When can I be discharged?"
The young female doctor hesitated for a moment, glancing at the head physician, who had been standing stiffly at the side, pretending to be invisible during the confrontation.
The older doctor cleared his throat and stepped forward.
"Your condition has stabilized, but given the... circumstances, I’d recommend at least another day of observation."
Aurora frowned.
Another day under this roof meant another day where Mike could come back and cause trouble.
That wasn’t something she was interested in.
"Discharge me now," she said firmly. "I’ll sign whatever papers you need."
The head physician opened his mouth, but one look at Aurora’s expression made him shut it again.
"Very well," he relented with a sigh. "I’ll have the paperwork prepared."
The nurses scurried out, whispering among themselves, while the young female doctor stayed behind, shifting on her feet as if debating whether to speak.
After a few seconds, she finally said, "Miss Aurora, what about the payment?"
"Payment?" Aurora was taken aback. Then she pointed in the direction where Mike had left and asked,
"Didn’t my father pay anything?"
The young female doctor hesitated before shaking her head. "No, he didn’t."
Aurora let out a short laugh, though there was no humor in it. "Of course he didn’t."
She reached into her pockets instinctively, only to realize she had no idea if she even had money in this world. Her heart sank slightly.
"Do I have an account on file?" she asked.
The doctor checked the tablet in her hand and nodded. "Yes."
"How much balance does it have?" Aurora asked curiously.
"Around $3 million." The nurse explained.
Aurora heaved a sigh of relief and asked,
"Alright, how much are the hospital bills?"
"$2 million." The nurse said with a hesitant expression.
Aurora: "..."
Suddenly, she thought of something and asked,
"Wait...before falling into a coma, did I ask you to shift me to the VIP ward?"
The nurse shook her head,
"No. It was based on your stepmother’s request."
"Stepmother? Um...excuse me, if you don’t mind...can you tell me about myself?" Aurora asked expectantly.
The nurse looked at Aurora with a complicated gaze before saying,
"It’s better if you investigate on your own."
Aurora bit her lips before nodding, then she calmly said,
"All right. Please call my stepmother and ask her to settle the bill. I won’t pay for $2 million when she was the one who made the decision to put me in the VIP ward."
