Chapter 72: New Name
Chapter 72: Chapter 72: New Name
A cold detachment settled over him like a second skin.
It was happening again.
No matter what he said, no matter how much he denied it, the result would be the same. They had already decided he was guilty.
"Maybe it’s time we stop giving him chances," his aunt said sharply.
"He’s a lost cause. A thief is a thief. Let’s not pretend otherwise. Kick him out."
His uncle nodded, his jaw set.
"I agree. I won’t tolerate a criminal in my house."
Adam’s chest tightened, but he refused to let them see his pain. He was used to this.
Used to being discarded.
His father suddenly stood up, his face a storm of rage.
"You ungrateful brat!" Before Adam could react, a fist slammed into his cheek, sending him sprawling to the floor.
A metallic taste filled his mouth. Blood.
"I didn’t steal anything," Adam whispered, his voice barely audible.
Another blow. Then another. Each one was followed by the same accusation.
"Liar."
"Thief."
"Disgrace."
Adam didn’t fight back. He didn’t cry. He didn’t plead. He just stared blankly at the floor, repeating the same words like a broken record.
"I didn’t steal anything."
Finally, his father stepped back, breathing heavily.
"Get out," he spat. "And don’t ever come back. Not here. Not to your uncle’s house. Nowhere. You’re not my son."
Adam slowly pushed himself up, blood dripping from his lip.
He turned to his mother, his brother, his cousin—none of them met his eyes. His own parents don’t trust him anymore...
He was alone.
Again.
Without a word, he walked to the door and stepped out into the cold night.
Adam didn’t know where he was going. He didn’t have friends or family.
His only will to live left was Mary.
"Come on, Adam! You can’t give up! Remember your dream, right? You have to live! For her!"
Adam went to school the next day in the hopes of changing his future.
For the next 2 months, he struggled. He would find some garden or benches to sleep at, take showers in school, and look for a job.
Soon, he landed a job and moved to a small apartment.
He studied every single day. He wanted to change his fate, his destiny.
However, fate was truly against him.
First, he got to know that Mary and Ethan were getting engaged. Just as he was reeling from the shock, his story about stealing things at his uncle’s house spread.
Adam could see his world falling apart.
The mere thought of seeing disgust in Mary’s eyes the next day made him tremble. He couldn’t face her...he could never...
And the third worst news? The term was about to end, and he had to pay $8,000 in school fees.
$8000...it was a big amount for him.
Especially when he was not earning more than $1000 per year.
Student loan? His document was rejected due to insufficient collaterals...
In the end, Adam dropped out.
He moved to a far away location and became a mechanic. Lived there, ate the free lunch provided by the boss, and saved up some money.
Within 2 years, he rented a small apartment in the suburbs of New York.
Life went by.
Adam never looked back.
Why?
He didn’t want to remember how his family never believed him and wronged him.
He didn’t want to remember how his only source of light became someone else’s.
He didn’t want to remember his naive self who dreamt of things he could never reach.
With a new name and new identity, he hoped never to see anyone from his past.

"I looked in Mr. Adam’s histroy and found something more interesiting. Mr. Adam, isn’t it true that you have Kleptomania?" Mr. Hendrick asked with a knowing smirk.
Adam felt his heart skipping a beat.
Sophia gazed in Adam’s direction and, seeing his reaction, understood everything.
But as a professional lawyer, she was used to such situations.
She quickly composed herself and turned back to Mr. Hendricks.
"Objection, Your Honor," she said firmly.
"Mr. Hendricks is attempting to diagnose my client without any credible medical evidence.
Unless he has certified medical documents proving such a condition, this claim is purely speculative and intended to damage my client’s credibility."
The judge adjusted his glasses and turned his attention to Mr. Hendricks.
"Mr. Hendricks, do you have any certified medical records proving Mr. Waters has kleptomania?"
Mr. Hendricks cleared his throat and looked at the judge.
"Your Honor, while we do not have a recent medical record, we have testimonies from his past family members confirming his tendencies."
Sophia smirked.
"So, no medical evidence? Just the biased words of people who abandoned him?"
She turned to the judge.
"Your Honor, the defense is attempting to use unverified statements to assassinate my client’s character rather than provide tangible evidence related to this case.
My client’s past, even if their claims were true, has no bearing on the current lawsuit against Mr. Winston.
We are here to discuss the false accusations and financial exploitation my client suffered at Mr. Winston’s hands."
The judge nodded.
"I agree. Unless you have medical documents or evidence directly linking Mr. Waters to this alleged disorder, I will not allow these claims to influence the case.
The court will not entertain baseless character attacks."
Mr. Hendricks clenched his jaw but nodded.
"Understood, Your Honor."
Sophia took the opportunity to press forward.
"Now, let’s return to the real issue at hand. The sudden deposit of $450,000 into my client’s account.
Mr. Winston’s legal team claims this is suspicious, yet they fail to explain where the money actually came from. Well, Your Honor, we have that answer."
She signaled her assistant, who promptly handed a document to the judge.
"This is a verified transaction report showing that the money in my client’s account was from selling the gold bought by Miss Emily, who is a family friend of Mr. Adam.
This is the document showing that Miss Emily hasn’t sold any car parts in the past few days."
