Chapter 927: Chapter 217: The King’s Vision_2

Gortani’s complexion suddenly turned deathly pale, the King’s words made it clear that the Smey Clan desired independence.

Not only Gortani, but even Helen and Liu Shock were taken aback. In their wildest dreams, they had not imagined the King would be so direct—however, what did it mean for him to tell them both this? What was the King’s intention?

"Look at yourselves, unable to bear even a little insider information, and you still claim to be genius priests!" The King straightened his stooped back and peered through squinted eyes with a compelling masculine force, like a majestic lion upon the mountain peak, opening his drowsy eyes under the breeze to survey the frolicking antelope on the plains below.

"Your Majesty, the information you’ve provided is really quite shocking, and there was no need for us to know these secrets," Old Liu said with a wry smile. In front of the King, Liu Shock felt similar to how he did around the elders of Andulan. The King always managed to control the rhythm of the conversation, guiding one’s thoughts, while he remained an enigma.

"It’s nothing. The two of you have the qualifications to know all of this. In fact, these matters can’t really be considered core secrets; they’re secrets in your eyes, but to the highest ranks of the six great noble houses, they’re hardly the biggest secrets. The Bode Clan’s long-standing weakness has been proven by the fact that many years ago the Smey Clan expelled both the Chekin Clan and the Beamon of bird-folk from the Bode territories! Jose is a rare talent, one that may appear only once every few thousands of years, or even tens of thousands. If every Smey Overlord had half of his ability, by now the Bimon Kingdom would be dominated by Swan Beamon. We all know his strength; if he didn’t harbor such aspirations, I would actually look down on him." The King tapped his generous palm with the golden Staff in his hand, his gaze sweeping towards Gortani: "Nini, don’t take any of this to heart. When I was younger, the only Beamon in the entire Bimon Kingdom worthy of my respect was your father, Jose Mourinho. Before I ascended to the throne, your father and I made a bet—we traveled through human realms, one from the south and one from the north."

Gortani was at a loss for words and couldn’t speak.

Liu Shock and Helen also felt they were at a loss for words. They had not expected Lord Mourinho’s youthful adventures in the human world to be the result of a bet with the King—a bet that the King had honorably pursued by directly crossing over Mount Tamerlarya.

"Now, another one has caught my eye, and that’s you," the King fixed his gaze on Liu Shock, speaking deliberately.

"My nickname at the Northeast Temple is the ’Prodigal Son,’ and many think I’m an idiot," Liu Shock said, somewhat embarrassed, as the King praised him so highly.

"Even if you were truly an idiot, as long as you’re enlightened by the wisdom of a priest, anyone who still regards you as an idiot would be the real fool," the King tapped his head: "It’s no wonder, there are always more mediocre people in this world. Clever ones like me are few and far between."

Though the statement was arrogant, when the King said it, it fit so perfectly. Liu Shock began to see the sense in Moer’s words; after this brief conversation, where could he dare to harbor the slightest bit of contempt for the King based on his ordinary appearance?

"Thank you for the praise," said Liu Shock, slightly elated by the compliment.

"However, your situation differs from that of Jose," King Grecke Sal said with a faint smile. "Although the Smey Clan is hereditary nobility, they are not the holders of real power. Swans are not a strong race, and all he can do now is try his best to create an air of absolute authority and order within the Mining Village, forming a self-governing territory. Personally, I do not oppose such a practice; in fact, many great nobles do exactly that. It’s just that no one has been quite like Jose, who disdains some of the current Beamon customs and wishes to declare independence openly. Jose had some painful experiences in his youth which you don’t know about. Have you seen his followers? Not one Bimon warrior among them! I have known Jose for more than a day or two and I know that he is a principled Beamon. Although he holds resentment, he would never let that turn him against the nation. I am certain that in times of crisis for the Beamon, he would be the first to stand up! But you, Richard, are different. I’ve heard that even the Battle Armor worn by your followers during your scuffle with my son was the Crown Thorns Armor, and that’s something I cannot ignore."

Liu Shock frowned and silently twirled the glass in his hand, utterly confused about what the King meant. What had triggered old Swan’s past trauma?

"Richard, our kingdom, from ancient times until now, has had a significant flaw in its governance system: the nobility’s right to raise private armies. If a noble has vast wealth and high status, they can endlessly recruit soldiers within their territory. Theoretically, with enough money, it’s entirely possible to create a personal army larger than the national Regular army," the King said with a dismissive laugh. "The Mank Tribe, or humans, although they have been separate from the Beamon for a thousand years, still base their current systems on our Beamon traditions. Whether it’s the power struggles of the elite or the class system, they are hardly any different. It’s undeniable, they have made improvements. Since centralizing royal authority, humans can implement policies efficiently. This is our greatest fault as Beamon. Although Beamon royal power is supreme, it is significantly undermined by the constraints of both the council of elders and the temple. As for ’The Ten-Year Trial,’ it is purely a drawback—seemingly fair and democratic, but actually foolish. Competing for the throne through a combination of martial skill and intellect, what does that have to do with ruling a nation? Being a skilled fighter and smart means you can run a country? Even if you can, what legacy can a king leave behind in just ten years?"
