Chapter 584: Chapter 123: A Crafty Old Man and A Cunning Young One_3
"A Saintess is a deity servant based in the ’Divanci City’ under the Holy Vatican, with the duty of guarding the ’Sacred Fire’. They are highly revered within the city and have numerous special privileges. However, Saintesses appear clad in white robes, instead of the traditional hooded apparel that covers their hair. In such, Joan’s Bepsy lineage would inevitably be exposed, which would spell disaster," sighed Master Puskas.
Liu Zhenhan whistled frivolously. He knew of similar female temple officials in the Bimon Temple who tended to the altar’s flame. These girls were all of noble and aristocratic origin, which made him understand the old man’s concern.
"When I first sent young Joan to the abbey, I had her head shaved and used Qi-Magic to slow-down the growth of her hair. Each year, I would have to re-apply the spell, hence why she seems to despise me every time she sees me. She had no idea about the concerns her foster father had for her," Master Puskas sighed once more.
Liu Zhenhan whistled again, utterly surprised. He hadn’t expected Joan to be a bold, beautiful nun.
"It’s very unfortunate, I initially wanted her to be a regular nun and lead a peaceful life, but it branched out unexpectedly, with so many complications," the old man said grimly.
"Master, no offense, but didn’t you have any of your old friends or former students? Not even a single trustworthy friend to whom you could entrust your daughter? Did you have to hand her over to the Holy Vatican?" Liu Zhenhan found it strange that a man of such status wastes his efforts.
"Kid! Ever thought about how old I am now? Two centuries ago, I did have a follower or two, but their very bones have turned to dust. How can I possibly start seeking them out now? As to friends, I spent most of my time either studying magic or meditating, where would I find the time to make friends? Putting such valuable time into making friends would never make me a Saint Chiao Mage!" Master Puskas glared coldly at Liu Zhenhan.
His words reminded Liu Zhenhan of his own mediocre Mage-followers. Although they worked diligently every day, they spent half the day chit-chatting unlike Master Puskas, who was committed to his practice. No wonder their grades disappointed him.
"So, why me?" Liu Zhenhan had been wanting to ask this question for a while.
Liu Zhenhan had also been mulling over this question. He thought that in response, Master Puskas would sincerely say, ’Because, Richard, you emanate a strong sense of kingly aura, and your kind-heartedness reassures me about Joan. In fact, why don’t you marry her? I will also join you two, and together, as father and son, we can navigate through this world, destroying anyone who displeases us.’
The thought of this made Liu chuckle. He wondered how to tactfully reject the man’s offer without emotionally damaging the Mage. Indeed, it would be great if he could subdue a Saint Chiao Mage. If it was not possible, he thought he could just go back and discuss it with his wives.
"There’s no less pathetic a choice than you, Liu!" Master Puskas almost angered Liu to death. "Joan has already reformed ninety-nine criminals, and only one more would allow her entry into Divanci as a Saintess. You are destined to be the hundredth. If that prerequisite didn’t exist, do you think I would not rip the skin off your bones? Do you think I’d recognise your fairy dragons?"
"What the hell!" Liu Zhenhan was choked for a moment before exclaiming. Despite this, he knew that the old man was not lying. The Fairy Dragons were indeed immune to magic, but the old man’s abilities surpassed most others in controlling magic. Even the Eight-Armed Naga knew how to utilize water elements to lift coral reefs for physical attacks. So, the old man must be infinitely more skilled. The Dragon Clan probably means nothing to him.
"As long as you never submit to Joan and continue doing unscrupulous things such as gambling, pillaging, and stealing, Joan will never be able to reform the hundredth criminal. Thus, she will never become a Saintess." Master Puskas continued with a beaming smile.
"Damn you! What if I refuse?" snapped Liu Zhenhan.
"Refuse? Go ahead and try. If you refuse, I’ll encourage the Holy Vatican to deal with you," the old man said with a still-smiling face, as if he had Liu Zhenhan under complete control.
"I’d like to see them try!" Instantly, Liu Zhenhan became antagonistic and fierce.
"Do you understand any respect for elders?" Master Puskas smiled at Liu Zhenhan. "You are too impulsive, do you really think you are the bravest fighter under the stars? To be honest with you, this world doesn’t only have those you’ve seen or heard of. The Aegean Continent is vast, and countless legendary and powerful beings hide within. They are also three Dragon Knights and two Saint Chiao Mages, known to the outside world. However, there are numerous unknown and hidden powerhouses. Have you any idea how many Dragon Knights and Dragon Priests there were during the battles against the intrusion from the Giants and the Land/Sea War?"
"These two pieces of history are antiquities; hence the data on them is vague. I had not paid much attention to these histories before," Liu Zhenhan replied.
"Let me enlighten you on the God Demon War ten thousand years ago. There were at least a hundred Dragon Knights and Dragon Priests back then," said Master Puskas as he gestured for a cigar.
