Chapter 381: Chapter 83 Huge Temptation_2
O’Neal wiped the corners of his eyes surreptitiously.
"Well, that’s not necessarily true. We are Feilengcui of Red Earth City. After this big fire, we might be able to turn misfortune into fortune. Humans might end up giving us an impenetrable fortress," Richard said with a nonchalant smile, "There are two sides to everything, we need to be more optimistic. Even if it comes to the point Daisy mentioned, as long as we have our hands, Feilengcui will never disappear."
"An impenetrable fortress? Richard... have you been under some kind of shock?" Helen asked, reaching out to touch Richard’s head.
"Never mind... I can’t explain it all at once," Richard shook his head ruefully.
"You know, it feels different having a man in the house at this time," Tutor Cui Beixi said with a smile, "Although I know Richard is talking nonsense, I feel a lot more at ease."
This made everyone laugh.
Richard also laughed.
I’m talking nonsense? If you had seen how the large kilns for baking bricks in the production team operated as I have, You wouldn’t think so, thought Richard.
"Right, why did you stop Gude from eradicating the rats? At this rate, the pandas’ favorite food, the Buddha Belly Bamboo forest will be destroyed!" Ning Yu asked.
The blazing Fire Spirit atop Red Earth Highland, through the heat conveyed from geothermal energy had already scorched the plants within a half-mile radius of Feilengcui. The slat banana plants and Buddha belly bamboos in Red Earth square had all their moisture evaporated, taking on the appearance of hundred-year-old Arabian skeletons in the desert.
If the mammoths’ food, the slat banana plants were destroyed, it wouldn’t matter too much thanks to the Lord still having Life Spring and slat banana seeds. However, as additional misfortune would have it, there was a problem with the pandas’ favorite food, the Buddha belly bamboo forest.
Ever since Red Earth Highland turned into a volcano, the guinea pigs within a half-mile radius have been gnawing at the roots of the remaining bamboo as if they had gone mad from some severe shock. Every day in the dead of night, the terrifying sound of gnawing bamboo roots coming from underneath the surface made one’s skin crawl.
General Pan and the panda warriors had dug up the ground around some area of the bamboo forest for inspection. In the deep layers of soil, small rat tunnels were filled with bright yellow chewed-up bamboo shavings. Although the Buddha Belly Bamboo forest spread over three to four hundred acres, given the guinea pigs’ frantic gnawing, it was feared that in another half a month, this forest, having narrowly escaped dehydration from geothermal heat, would not be able to escape the devastating mouths of these rodents.
Gude and the pandas wanted to eradicate the rats, but Richard stopped them. Not only was Ning Yu curious as to why, but everyone was also somewhat confused.
"These guinea pigs have gone neurotic from this fire, poor little creatures. Don’t worry, their stomachs are only so big, how much could they gnaw off? I was planning on dealing with them too, but now I’ve decided to let them go for a few days..." Richard trailed off, "In a few days you’ll understand. Maybe our food supply all depends on these little creatures."
On the topic of food, everyone’s brows furrowed again.
"If only the war had taken place in autumn," Ning Yu sighed.
If it were autumn, the Tanggula Peak reindeer herd would have just come down the mountain. If the weather had not turned cold, the Sanggan river would not have frozen over, and without ice, fishing would have still been plausible. Had it been autumn, they could forage for wild vegetables, and if the money to buy food had been saved, even if Red Earth Highland was destroyed, there would still be sufficient funds to rebuild a stone castle.
Now nothing was left, and relying solely on the guinea pigs from the bamboo forest for food was nerve-wracking given that the current population of Feilengcui was over 1,200 people, plus prisoners.
"Don’t worry, as your Lord, I have a plan!" Richard reassured everyone once more.
Richard recalled a peculiar event his mother had once told him about that had taken place in his hometown’s bamboo forest during the national crisis of 1960 - this incident had saved countless lives.
The Fairy Dragon glared at the lost-in-thought Lord with furrowed brows. She was worried he was considering exploiting the Razor Mountain Goblins. Most of them were now the old, the weak, women and children. If their food was stolen in winter, they would be doomed.
"Don’t worry! I’ve acknowledged the Razor Mountain Goblins as my citizens. There’s no logic in a Lord robbing his own citizens," Richard immediately saw through the little one’s thoughts.
"Master, what about those human prisoners, especially the mercenaries? They’re no good. The cellar isn’t an effective jail without a door, people escape every night. I’ve already executed quite a few. They don’t take into account that no one can escape in the wasteland right under the nose of the Mastiff People!" Bellamy ran his fingers through his golden hair.
"Where’s Vieri?" asked Richard, "Didn’t I assign him and Karu to manage the prisoners? How did this end up falling on you? Cleaning up the battlefield should already be hard enough. Where is he? I haven’t even seen him at meal times."
"It’s winter now, Vieri is a bear-man. Although he doesn’t need to hibernate, he definitely needs more sleep. You’re really asking too much of him to look after prisoners," Ning Yu quietly reminded her beloved.
