Chapter 199: Chapter 10_1
Bauman didn’t know what she had been singing at all, even she didn’t know why she had the thought to sing at that moment.
Her hands and feet had long been frozen stiff by the frigid wind of the Demon World at night, as was her face. Bauman even thought at one point that she didn’t have the strength to open her mouth, but when she sat down with reckless abandon, it seemed even more suffocating in her chest, forcing her to take in large gulps of icy air to ease it slightly.
The piercing cold air rushed into her throat, and after making a round inside her slender and fragile lungs, it inexplicably transformed into closely linked notes, leaping out of Bauman’s lips.
That was not any negative curse that a Lich would be good at, Bauman didn’t even know what she was singing. She was merely keeping time with the entire forest, looking at the swaying branches casting dancing shadows on the ground, she took deep breaths with the rise and fall of her chest, and sang out weird melodies.
While Nai’aozu did not grant Bauman a robust physique, surprisingly, he gifted her with a beautiful voice. In the beginning of her singing, Bauman thought she was just merely screaming, this behavior frightened the wind dogs that had been following her, causing them to back off a step or two. It didn’t mean anything more than that. She didn’t want to keep screaming, but her trembling voice simply wouldn’t cease.
When she finally calmed down a bit, the tremble in her voice gradually disappeared, Bauman realized that the breath from her mouth was no longer icy and erratic, it was more than just a collection of notes, not a few fresh piano practice songs in her head either, but harmonious sounds that continually resonated with the faint elements of magic.
On Bauman’s side, she was just following and improvising with the music surging in her throat.
But on the wind dogs’ side, it turned into a relentless nightmare.
The initial scream from the Lich girl was very ordinary, even the demon clan members, who were on the brink of death and dragged away by the wind dogs, would occasionally let out similar roars. But when this voice gradually turned into a song, each wind dog found that no matter how hard they tried, they could not move their bodies at all. The cold sensation that was initially shielded by their thick fur suddenly intensified, gradually penetrating every muscle and bone inside their bodies.
The wind dogs began to become restless, but they did not feel any significant change in the magic fluctuation in the air, nor was there any sign of wind or ice magic being cast. Although they didn’t know what was undead magic, the prey they had been tracking, even if it was acting strangely now, was not casting any spells. Other than the dancing light and shadow in the forest illuminated by Xiang Pa, everything seemed to be normal.
However, as Bauman’s singing grew more resonant and louder, the pupils of the wind dogs gradually lost their luster.
A flash of cold light volleyed. An enormous wind dog head rolled to the ground, but no blood sprang out, eerily.
"So, Baojia’s violin could be used as a weapon with its metal strings..." That was Bauman’s last thought before she lost consciousness.
Baojia was drawn in by the singing. Arriving alone, he wasn’t dressed in his trademark black outfit. His clothes looked purely like pajamas. There was a simple reason, he had noticed the abnormality around the camp just before going to bed, the noise of the mutated wind dogs was too easy to identify for an experienced adventurer like Baojia.
Compared to the strength of Zorro’s team, the strength of this magical beast was weak, Baojia was not really worried. But the noise outside was weird, it sounded as if the pack of wind dogs had somehow split into two. Baojia wandered around the tents in confusion and finally found Bauman’s tent empty.
There was no blood or clear signs of a struggle around the tent, but Baojia still rushed out of the camp with his violin in a panic, even without time to change his clothes.
After he killed a few of the wind dogs outside the camp, they scattered and fled in an instant, disappearing without a trace, but there was no sign of Bauman in the place where the brutes had gathered. The frozen soil in the woods had become as hard as stone due to the cold wind. Bauman left no footprints as she walked, even the dead leaves and twigs she occasionally kicked open had been scattered again by the night wind, making it a chaotic mess.
Baojia thoroughly checked a few small paths back and forth, but this revealed nothing. It had occurred to him that the stubborn Lich girl might have made her way deep into the woods, but until he was sure of her direction, he couldn’t follow her at full speed like he would on the road. As for involving other team members in the search, Baojia had absolutely no intention of doing so. While his female subordinates usually got along well, he had no idea what transformations they might undergo if they were out of his sight — this was the Demon World after all, where "fair competition" included many "reasonable" methods!
When Baojia was already out of ideas, a faint, intermittent sound came from a certain direction inside the woods. Mixed with the howling night wind, spreading through the woods, it resembled Bauman’s singing. If Baojia had not strayed from the camp a fair distance and stopped exactly where he was, he might not have heard the singing at all.
The adventurer in his pajamas, violin in hand, stood on the spot, trying to pinpoint the origin of the singing — the mere presence of the sound indicated that Bauman hadn’t met with too great a misfortune, and he had to determine the exact direction to hurry over.
But when Baojia began to listen carefully, he was astonished to find that he felt much colder. This should have been impossible; his strength meant that even if he was only wearing pajamas, this chilly wind should not have affected him at all. Baojia regarded himself with confusion but found nothing wrong. The strange sensation from before seemed as if it never existed.
Feeling rather baffled, he didn’t ponder it too much and turned his attention back to locate the origin of Bauman’s singing. That said, that inexplicable chill crept up on him again...
After several repeats, the experienced silver-eyed adventurer finally pinpointed the problem. The sudden chill he felt was closely related to Bauman’s singing. The closer he got to Bauman, the clearer the singing became, and the colder he felt, so much so that his blood flow seemed to stagnate.
As Baojia rushed towards the source of the singing, he also used his mental power to sense the weird effect of it. Although he did not notice any obvious fluctuation in magic power, he sensed a strange force controlling the flow of his own blood under the repeated sweeps of his powerful silver eyes. Fortunately, this power was not enough to threaten him.
If his judgment was correct, this power should be the "power of singing", a unique talent of the Barbarian priests, the Beamon, as told in legends. Although the silver eyes are part of the Demon Clan, whether they are summoning their own nightmare mounts by using the regular summoning technique or the extraction summoning technique, they have a lot in common with the Beamon’s Spirit Communication War Song. Though there’re no Beamon priests in the Demon World, there are one or two Beamon races who have settled down here. Baojia, while adventuring on the continent, also heard rumors about the Beamon War Song.
However, no matter how he tried, Baojia couldn’t understand why Bauman, a Lich, would sing something like the Bimon War Song. Even though her singing probably came unconsciously, when Baojia finally arrived at the scene, he could tell at first glance that the Lich girl was currently spellbound.
Pajamas Zorro killed nearby Mutated Wind Hounds, and revising the fact that the blood within them had indeed coagulated from his previous discovery, he was reassured about it. Bauman seemed to have unintentionally sung an evil war song that made the blood coagulate.
Baojia knew the girl was weak, that forcibly exerting power under such circumstances would cause more harm to her body than the Wind Hounds scratching and biting. At the same time as he was clearing up the Wind Hounds, he had already cast Hypnosis sparingly on Bauman. The girl’s singing soon became weaker and weaker, eventually turning into uneven breathing. Baojia stepped forward, picked up the girl, and gently examined her. Finding no obvious external or internal injuries, he breathed a sigh of relief - it was really a blessing in disguise...
When Bauman opened her eyes, she found herself back in her own tent. The thick blankets covering her drove away the chill. The girl laughed at herself because she knew she still hadn’t managed to escape; she must have been rescued by Baojia who arrived just in time. Though not being killed by the Wind Hounds was something to be grateful for, it seemed like all her efforts had gone to waste - everything had returned to square one.
The girl tried to struggle to get up but found her body to be unresponsive, weak. Part of this was due to hypnosis not having yet worn off, but Bauman had no experience or inkling of this. More importantly, the strange song she had sung unwittingly had drained her stamina and energy, and she didn’t even have the strength to lift the blankets now.
The other women in the adventuring team seemed unaware of the girl’s escape. At least they pretended not to know. Bauman falling ill due to fatigue on the road was a regular occurrence, and not unusual in Zorro’s team. When the team was preparing to set out, there was still no movement from this tent; this meant that the girl was ill again.
So the few well-meaning women, or those who could hold a conversation with Bauman, came to help. One even offered her frequently used pack animal. In no time, the team continued their journey while Bauman rested again.
Throughout the entire process, the silver-eyed team leader did not appear, acting as if he didn’t know what had happened the previous night.
