Chapter 1581: Chapter 488: The Pearl-Bi Union (Part 2)

"I... I..." Wei Zhi hesitated, stammering for a long time without managing to say a coherent sentence.

"Wei Zhi, I think your Sea Clan must have already discovered the special effects of White Shell Coins, right? I’m talking about their abilities to trigger mutations in Arcane Beasts!" Liu Zhenhan’s eyes darted in thought, and he began probing for answers. "The Land Races have already uncovered this secret—why would your native Merfolk, living in the sea, be slower to realize it? There are so many Arcane Beast species in the ocean—it doesn’t make sense that they wouldn’t instinctively consume the White Shells nearby! I once fought a mutated Arcane Beast, and from what I observed, any Arcane Beast with even modest intelligence seems to have a fondness for Shell Coins!"

"Yes," Wei Zhi replied with a hint of surprise as she glanced at Liu Zhenhan. "We Merfolk indeed noticed the special effects of White Shell Coins early on. But what you said isn’t entirely accurate—there isn’t a single Arcane Beast in the sea that consumes shell materials!"

"Why not?" Liu Zhenhan was puzzled. "Land-based Arcane Beasts are fond of eating them, so why would sea-dwelling ones refuse? Is it a matter of taste? That seems overly picky!"

Wei Zhi explained earnestly, "When Arcane Beasts mutate, their pores open to the widest extent, allowing them to absorb a massive amount of external air. Through absorbing the elemental powers contained in this gas, they enhance their innate elemental capabilities! The air on land and the air in the sea are entirely different. The ’Sea of Mist’ is composed entirely of toxic fog—if they excessively absorb the air, the accumulated high concentration of toxins would instantly overwhelm and kill any creature!" Wei Zhi’s explanation revealed her detailed understanding and research on Arcane Beast mutations. "That’s why sea-dwelling Arcane Beasts don’t consume shells—they possess intelligence and instinctively avoid harmful risks!"

"But how is it that Arcane Beasts living in the Sea of Mist aren’t poisoned to death during their daily lives, yet once they mutate and absorb too much air, they end up dying?" Liu Zhenhan found this hard to believe. "If this were true, wouldn’t it be as absurd as a shark drowning in seawater?"

"No creature can be entirely immune to toxins!" The Mermaid offered a simple analogy to illustrate that this claim was valid. "You land dwellers can survive even when daytime temperatures soar. But if the temperature rose to the point of melting rocks, could you still survive?"

"Temperature and toxins don’t seem to be the same thing, though, do they?" Liu Zhenhan thought to himself, *Who says it’s impossible? My Overlord Dragon Pearl has a temperature-regulating barrier that’s impervious to hot or cold! Likewise, the Detoxifying Pearl under the jaw of the Silk Continent’s Resplendent Dragon can make it immune to all poisons!*

"From an environmental perspective, they’re practically the same!" The Mermaid gave a bitter smile. "Think about it again carefully—doesn’t this reasoning make sense?"

"According to what you’ve just explained, it’s because the air on land lacks toxins that it ensures successful Arcane Beast mutations, right?" Liu Zhenhan pondered this carefully before smiling and fixing his gaze on the Mermaid. "Wei Zhi, don’t you have a ’Harmonious Pearl’? If you give one to a sea-dwelling Arcane Beast and let it consume White Shell Coins, couldn’t that ensure a successful mutation? These pearls create the most comfortable surface environment for the wearer. If an Arcane Beast wears this, it would absorb air without risk of poisoning! Furthermore, the Harmonious Pearl doesn’t have usage limits—it could be reused endlessly. With that solution, sea-dwelling Arcane Beasts could reliably achieve successful mutations!"

"We... we sea creatures are accustomed to absorbing toxic fog! The environment produced by the ’Harmonious Pearl’ still contains toxic fog!" Wei Zhi’s delicate face briefly displayed an almost imperceptible change, disappearing in an instant.

"You just said toxins can only be resisted, not avoided entirely. Based on that logic, when you breathe in toxic fog, aren’t you resisting the toxins rather than needing them physiologically? The Harmonious Pearl creates a barrier that supposedly offers the most comfortable, personal environment. Shouldn’t this environment, by definition, be free of toxins? Allow me to make a bold assumption—could it be that what you Merfolk and sea-dwelling Arcane Beasts rely on isn’t the toxins within the mist, but the water molecules that make up the mist itself?" Liu Zhenhan’s sharp gaze locked onto Wei Zhi’s eyes. Unknowingly, while discussing Arcane Beast mutations, he had shifted the focus to the life habits of Merfolk. "Allow me a second bold assumption: Is the barrier currently created by your Harmonious Pearl on your body in fact a personal water barrier, rather than a toxic fog barrier?"

"No!" Wei Zhi’s beautiful eyes flickered with a trace of alarm as she hurriedly shook her head. "I have no idea what you’re talking about! We Merfolk have no tradition of rearing Arcane Beasts, nor has anyone ever experimented with the Harmonious Pearl like you described."

"No tradition of rearing Arcane Beasts? Then why are you so well-versed in the process of mutation?" Liu Zhenhan whistled. "Sea Clan having no tradition of rearing Magical Beasts? Who’s going to believe that!"

"The mutation of Arcane Beasts doesn’t only come from consuming White Shells—sometimes there are extraordinary circumstances!" The Mermaid defended herself. "We Merfolk studied these exceptional mutations as the foundation of our research!"

"You mentioned earlier that when an Arcane Beast mutates, its pores open widely, absorbing elemental molecules from the air to enhance its power. If toxic fog prevents survival during mutations, then even with exceptional mutations, the Arcane Beasts wouldn’t survive. How, then, did they provide you with subjects for research?" Liu Zhenhan’s question left the Mermaid speechless.
