Chapter 1223: Chapter 333: Accidental Success
Rommel laughed heartily, "The Gold-Loving Ants are a desert calamity. Every six months, they split into new groups and migrate on a large scale. Fortunately, there are no veins within a thousand miles near Hu Ye Ancient City, and the migrating army of ants always starves halfway. I was worried you’d take the Ant Queen back to the Bimon Kingdom. If that happened, not only would Bimon be doomed, but the entire Aegean Continent would suffer. The breeding capacity of the Ant Queen is terrifying; just one batch of its offspring can cause endless trouble."
Liu Zhenhan also laughed out loud, cursing under his breath, "Damn! Do you think I need teaching on this matter? I’ve already secured the Ant Queen with a Hibernation Badge, waiting to wreak havoc on you guys."
The Mulanese army had been marching through the vast Taklamago Desert for eight days, turning countless corners, bypassing numerous ancient city ruins, oases, and massive dunes. The sand on the ground gradually turned into sparse sandy soil, with fern-like plants crawling across the barren land.
Liu Zhenhan saw many animals and birds whose names he could not recall, stealthily roaming this land. Signs of vigorous life signaled that the end of the Sea of Death was near.
The wind rose, and the sky was overcast with a mouthful of sand.
Another day’s march forward, and forests of date palms and gigantic cacti started appearing. Passing through a canyon, a vast river about the width of an arrow suddenly appeared before them. This river surged and meandered eastward; a tunnel-like bridge soared from south to north, with steep, towering river banks. Surrounding mountains pierced the clouds, their walls almost vertical.
"This is the Euphrates River, the mother of Mulan! The river surrounds more than half of Mulan’s territory like an umbilical cord. Follow the river eastward and north for a thousand miles, and you’ll reach the capital of Mulan, Damascus. But the Taklamago Desert is even larger; Mulan is just a small corner of it," Rommel, full of ambition, pointed forward with his whip.
"My goodness, this river is strange," Liu Zhenhan whistled as he watched the swift river waves and the dark reef. The river resembled the Nujiang River, with riverbanks twenty or thirty meters high. Unlike the riverbanks on the Donau Wasteland, which are all mudflats, this river commanded a majestic force.
"This tunnel bridge is called the Po Yi Bridge. Originally, this place was a valley that spanned across the riverbanks. To connect it, the Mulanese took a whole hundred years!" Rommel pointed at the huge tunnel-like bridge and said with a smile, "Poyi Road means ’Road of the Yellow Springs’ in the Mulanese language. You can imagine why this bridge is named so.
"What a natural stronghold!" Liu Zhenhan clicked his tongue, "Only about two thousand men could be deployed here to block this bridge tunnel. No one from the Aegean Continent could invade Mulan! No wonder you Mulanese are so confident!"
"There’s another way, from the eastern coast of Taklamago, to land by boat, then travel three thousand more miles west through the desert to reach Mulan’s territory," Rommel said seriously.
"No wonder the Sea Clan doesn’t bother you; it’s simply too far away." Liu Zhenhan laughed heartily while observing the massive tunnel bridge.
At the bridgehead, giant city gates could be opened, and the top was carved with parapets and crenellations, almost as fortified as a city wall, with numerous figures moving about.
Along the approach to the tunnel, countless palm trees were neatly planted, entwined with a layer of glossy green parasitic vines that blossomed with flowers as large as pumpkins, colorful and aromatic.
"The palm trees are growing ’Morning Glory Man-Eaters,’" Rommel warned Liu Zhenhan, "Don’t let your parrot fly about carelessly. If it gets too close, the vine will consume it. The ’Morning Glory Man-Eater’ can even hold a cow, just like the Gold-Loving Ants, it’s blood-thirsty, though it doesn’t run away."
Liu Zhenhan was startled and quickly whistled to call back Guoguo, who was wildly flying around with the little parrot, both about to gather flowers.
"Did you Mulanese intentionally plant these ’Morning Glory Man-Eaters’ here?" Liu Zhenhan stroked the heads of the little parrot and Guoguo while glancing at Rommel.
"Of course!" Rommel stared at Liu Zhenhan incredulously and greeted the general who came up to meet them warmly, ordering the army to continue marching.
"Mr. Beautiful, since this thing eats meat, how did you manage to plant it here?" Liu Zhenhan chased after Rommel with questions. "My god! Doesn’t it eat people?"
"Nonsense! How can it not eat people? When it’s time to compete for the magic yam seeds, go fight desperately for it!" Rommel chuckled, "This ’Morning Glory Man-Eater,’ which grows beyond twenty years, has another wonderful use worth risking your life for."
"What’s that wonderful use?" Liu Zhenhan’s heart was already drooling; such man-eating vines were really cool! The man-eating flowers of the Aegean Continent could barely handle a mouse at most, but these vines could hold a cow! It would be great to get some back in Aegean to cultivate.
"I’ll tell you when there’s a chance," Rommel replied coyly.
"My Emperor Polo!"
Two days later, a vast city appeared on the horizon, a huge statue of Goddess Moni and four enormous, peerless pyramids surrounded it half-moon style. The desert surface was a gravel desert, but the sand was golden. Twisted and deformed by the high temperature, nestled under verdant dunes palms, the city looked majestic and spectacular, a heavenly palace, everything shimmering with a golden reflection.
