Chapter 1027: Chapter 259 Painful Father Sebei
The cold moon was silent, and the treetops softly murmured and sang in the wind.
Dusk had long passed, yet who knew which household’s love-struck girl still stood stubbornly at the desolate street corner, as if waiting for the figure of her beloved.
Unlike the nouveau riche such as the Feilengcui Lord who took things as they came, the true noble families each had their own guildhalls and camps in the major provinces, and the Smey Clan, one of the nobles of the highest rank, was no exception. Located in the northeast corner of Sabak City, their Southwest Guildhall was close to the periphery of the Royal Palace’s Imperial Garden, an environment of serene elegance, accessible only to those with considerable influence.
Unlike the nearby buildings with their rugged style, the Southwest Guildhall was a Gothic-style tower exuding a more Western flair. Covering ten acres of land, with three stories from top to bottom, it was surrounded by lush camphor trees and rose gardens, with a meandering stream burbling through the flowers—a sight so refined and dignified that one could sense the character of its owner with just a glance.
As the sound of hooves echoed along the tree-lined avenue, carriages bearing the crest of a swan in flight alongside a dandelion tassel in silver came to a halt at the Southwest Guildhall’s entrance. Priests from Caiyu City and London City of the Southwest Province stretched languidly, disembarking from the carriages one by one.
The banquet organized by the Elders’ Council was indeed a joyous affair. As the premier elder Quentin Redkenap hailed from the old noble Wolf lineage that traced its history back thirteen hundred years, the banquet was exquisitely arranged to showcase the elegance of pure-blooded nobility. The main chef, a Halfling master invited specially for the occasion, created dishes featuring rare southeastern delicacies like Yinhua Moss and Immortal Fruit, and even Snake Berry and salt-water Rainbow Fish!
The southeastern delicacy, the sweet and juicy Snake Berry, is prone to spoilage, making its transport to the Imperial City a considerable feat undertaken by Elder Quentin Wolf Redkenap. To preserve the berry’s freshness, they could not be picked by hand; instead, they had to be plucked by the mouths of young maidens to prevent contact with impurities. The berries were then submerged in expensive olive oil held in the finest oak barrels to cut off exposure to air. Finally, the fastest mounts of the elite Wolf Cavalry were chosen—several wolves that raced straight to the Imperial City without rest, carrying the precious cargo.
As for the salt-water Rainbow Fish, they were even more extraordinary—thriving in saltwater lakes, their appearance closely resembled miniature whales. Weighing about five or six pounds each, they were famed for tasting exactly like true whales, a treat reserved for the lucky few who might chance upon a beached specimen—after all, who on the continent would have the opportunity to taste real whale meat? Because of this, the unique appeal of the Rainbow Fish was apparent, and Elder Redkenap had prepared, a month in advance, special box carts filled with saltwater to transport the fish to the Imperial City, safeguarding their journey. Out of the ten box carts that arrived, fewer than fifty Rainbow Fish survived.
Although the Southwest Province was known for its poverty, the generosity of Elder Redkenap made everyone grasp the true essence of what it meant to be a "noble."
Now even as the priests from Caiyu City and London Temple belched, their breath carried the sweet fragrance of Snake Berry and Rainbow Fish.
"This banquet was incredibly extravagant! Had I known, I would have brought our eldest sister along. She has lost quite a bit of weight since she got back and hardly eats anything," Gomes said as he dismounted from the carriage, stamping his slightly numb feet, barely looking up as he spoke to his second sister Golinny.
"How could our elder sister dare to see that Piegel now?" Golinny replied, a Damai hairpin between her teeth as she coiled her long hair, her words muffled, "You must have forgotten father’s words; nobody is allowed to mention Richard’s name in front of our sister!"
"Second sister, who is that girl waiting for? It’s already very late!" Gomes curiously pointed towards the girl standing under the camphor tree at the street corner, turning to ask his sister Golinny.
"Such a foolish girl. Who knows which good-for-nothing has deceived her! Make sure you never end up like that," Golinny replied in an old-fashioned, preachy tone, schooling her younger brother.
"Me? Well, that’s not certain, you know!" Gomes said, with a mischievous grin spreading across his handsome face. Suddenly, like magic, three bright red berries appeared between his fingers, "I stealthily pocketed three Snake Berries, especially saving them for our eldest sister to enjoy."
"You little rascal, getting quite adept at charming the ladies now, aren’t you?" Golinny scoffed, "Well, consider these Snake Berries a gift to your second sister! Our eldest sister wouldn’t care for them. She told me that back in Feilengcui, she ate better than at the Royal Palace banquets every day. Did you know Feilengcui had several Hobbit Halfling chefs? Four of them! There, they soak Snake Berries in fine wine, creating a drink they call ’Snake Berry Brandy’—imagine how delicious that must be! Oh, and I’ve heard recently a tribe of Halflings plans to migrate and settle in Feilengcui."
"Oh, Gomes, now you’re learning some bad habits!" Cui Beixi sauntered over, her smile blooming like flowers as she kept Gomes in her gaze, "To sneak away with fruit from a banquet is quite unseemly; those servants are all sharp-eyed, and if they gossip about it, father will have to rebuke you again! Let’s all head back together. We’re near Prince Tito’s residence, and with so many of us here, it wouldn’t do if we accidentally woke up the little princesses with our chatter."
