Chapter 78: Frigid
"Emma"
My shaky gaze averted to Dace and I suddenly found myself almost crying but I held it in, he watched me with worried features and read me closely.
"Let’s get you out"
I nodded.
"Are you done with your paper?" she asked and Dace raised his finished script to her without even sparing her a glance.
"I need to take Emma to the infirmary"
"O-Of course" she took the paper, adjusting her glasses like she still couldn’t believe he was done.
"Come on" Dace helped me up, I noticed his eyes narrowed when he felt my skin.
He lead me out of the class, I heard whispers behind me but I didn’t care about that right now. Having Dace close I could feel his warmth slipping into my body, I was getting warm, but my teeth kept chattering.
"You’re so cold" I heard him, in his worried tone.
"It was just a dream" I murmured like I would lose my mind any second, maybe I would because I kept replaying what happened.
Dace held me more closely than ever and even kept up with me even as I dragged my feet against the ground like a sluggish zombie.
It took us forever to get to the infirmary but Dace didn’t bother.
I heard the door and next, I was seated on the bed. With him still keeping close to me and holding me firm.
"What happened?" I heard Dace’s mom, as well as her clicking heels as she came towards us.
"She cold"
"Is she sick?"
"No"
"Then?"
"Emma"
I flinched as I slowly raised my gaze to meet Dace’s focused eyes on me. He didn’t need to say anything to me, he need not speak because I knew exactly what his eyes were telling me to do.
"I-I-I-It was a dream" I began in a shaky and dim tone I could barely recognize, I sobbed fighting back the tears as terror filled my body.
Dace calloused me in his arms and I shivered more.
"Dace" I heard his mom say, she didn’t say anything other than that, but I had a feeling she was letting him know something.
I suddenly felt a huge amount of heat radiating from Dace’s body, my teeth stopped chattering and I was covered in his warmth, so hot like it burned me and I welcomed it because this was exactly what I needed right now, nothing else but to stop my body from reliving that terror and he made my dream come true, he gave me that heat and a sense of protectiveness, I felt safe and shielded.
He gently stroked my hair and relaxed more against his embrace with a sigh and relief.
"You can tell me, baby," he said in a soft, tender tone. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and planted a kiss on my head. And the courage found me as I broke slightly from his embrace, but still kept that distance because I was scared of what might happen if I left his arms. And Dace couldn’t have it any other, with our impossible closeness still evident.
I took some time to recollect myself, I remembered when Dace dropped me at home, and I was still ogling my new phone, Vanessa was home and she told me that Owen was working on tracking that lady.
And then it was lights out, I remembered cuddling to bed, hoping to sleep early because of our exams the next day and then the realization struck me, this was the entire opposite of what I encountered, it really was a...
"It was a dream" I began in a dim tone, as the culmination got to me, it felt so real that I doubt that it was, but right now my brain was able to process everything, it really WAS a dream.
"It was cold, so cold, I felt like I was freezing inside" I flinched slightly when Camille took my hand.
She gave me a soft smile. "It’s okay..." she spoke in that melodious voice of hers "Keep going, you’re doing good"
I nodded as I observed her checking my pulse.
"A-And then, I saw the vampire that attacked me"
I noticed Dace’s body tensing when I mentioned it, I was shaken but he suddenly remained calm and his hand tightly firm on my waist, rubbed me gently and I felt the comfort again.
"H-He tried to attack me, I tried running but I couldn’t because the house disappeared and then..."
"Hey" he wiped my tears. "It’s okay, it was just a dream"
I nodded with a sob, I wanted his words to be true but in the back of my head, I still felt how real it was.
"Her insides were freezing" Camille began gaining our attention. "If she haven’t woken up, she would have gotten into hypothermia shock"
I think my heart dropped a beat.
"You dreamt that you were in a cold place, your body experiencing the cold ’’ she spoke and then her eyes darted to Dace who was mysteriously silent. And then back to me. "Your body was reliving that effect... physically"
"T-T-That’s not possible... It was a dream and..." I paused, and yet it felt so real, I gulped, what was this? I was actually experiencing what I had in my dream in real life.
"You should let your aunt know, I do not need to tell you that this isn’t normal, you know that already"
I gulped hard at her words.
"Dace, keep giving her your body heat, I would have used heating pads but you’re the only one that can keep her warm" her eyes were back to me. "I will be back with something warm for you to drink, okay?"
I nodded stiffly and she walked away.
I gasped, stunned and confused.
"How long have you been having bad dreams?"
My eyes were back to Dace who had his ardent gaze on me, could he tell? That this wasn’t the first? I gulped.
"I had one, back at the hospital," I said faintly, I didn’t put much thought into it, because I figured I was bound to have nightmares because of what I experienced. "And again... at home" I was confused and slowly my eyes widened, yes nightmares, I have been having a lot lately, which should stop but...
"You don’t think I was cursed because of the book do you?" I asked with wide eyes.
"Shh," he brought me back to his arms. "Let’s focus on getting you warmed up"
