Chapter 76: Uninvited {2}
Tom gave me this annoyed look and I knew he definitely hated me right now, go figure! And I was very certain it wasn’t just because I was given the spell book OR back here but because of the handsome werelion beside me, once again I have a feeling that Dace wasn’t supposed to be here.
"The book, Tom," Owen said, pinching the bridge of his nose.
After hearing everything, Dace didn’t take it well, he didn’t smile or say anything to me, I don’t know why but it feels like he was blaming himself for not paying more attention to the book at that time, but I was fine, I wasn’t jinxed.
"Really Owen? Look I respect you and your family, but bringing one of them in here is out of question and law" he said with a hint of anger, we really have gotten on his nerves today, I knew from this very moment, approaching this very bookstore was a double NO for me.
"Look, Tom, I agree but..." he sighed. "We need his help to find whoever gave Emma that book, we could have an intruder and it could be dangerous for people in town"
I noticed his eyes softened at Owen’s words, at least that was able to get through to him, maybe he would finally give in to our request.
His eyes darted to Dace who didn’t break his gaze with him. I noticed his throat moved and I was forced to divert my gaze to Dace and... I can see why... Dace was definitely not in a good mood, his silence was somewhat a blessing right now, and I felt super hot like I was standing next to a flame. The heat radiating off him was abnormal, I was forced to gulp myself.
"Fine" Tom finally spoke, reaching below his desk, not breaking gaze with us, he brought out the book and stretched his hand out.
Dace stepped forward and took it.
"Let’s hope you find out whoever was in my shop," Tom said.
"We will," Owen said to him.
Dace brought the book below his nose, was he checking for a scent? Was that why he asked for the book? I thought it was for something else.
"Well?" Owen urged.
I noticed Dace’s body tensed and next a sigh left him. "Emma’s scent is too strong, I can’t pick up the other"
That doesn’t sound good.
He sniffed the book again, I can’t help but admire watching him do that, I quickly shook my head, mentally scolding myself for doing that.
"Fuck!" he cursed dropping the book back on the desk. "I have nothing"
"Some HELP you are" Owen intoned with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. Dace was forced to glare at him.
"I will track it with a spell," Owen said, taking the book. "As long as she touched this book before giving it to Emma, I could trace it" he averted his eyes to Tom. "Thank you, Tom"
He just shrugged like he was cool, but I sure knew he was silently praying for us to leave.
So what now?
~
"D-Dace" I tucked his jacket. "A-Aren’t you gonna say anything to me?"
He finally set his eyes on me. "I should have known," he said and I noticed his body tensing again.
"It’s not your fault, it’s mine fault," I said in a downhearted voice before leveling my gaze. "Just because I wanted to find some stupid truth" I murmured under my breath.
I heard him chuckle and my eyes were back to him, he seemed amused now. "A stupid truth you now know"
A smile found my lips. "Yeah"
His features suddenly turn into a frown. "Are you such you’re okay?"
I sighed. "Yes I’m fine... just shaken"
"I’m sorry... I should have sniffed that person out but your scent, Emma..."
"I know... don’t worry Owen said he has a way"
And he didn’t seem pleased about that. "It’s as good as feeling useless, I have a special trait with scent, what other werelions can’t do, I can, but..."
"B-But..."
"Your scent won’t let me, it’s too good to divert my focus from"
I blushed heavily at his words, I really shouldn’t take that as a compliment but I most certainly did, at least now I know why he had a foul mood, he seemed helpless in this situation.
"Your phone"
"My phone?"
He nudged his head and I slid it out of my pocket, he assessed it with a serious gaze.
"Are you done staying here?"
"What?" I asked dumbfounded and he smiled, flicking my glasses.
"I’m asking if you still wanna stay in your aunt’s..." his eyes diverted to the shop. "...Shop"
"W-Why are we going somewhere?"
"You need a new phone Emma"
My eyes widened in realization and I quickly shook my head.
He raised an eyebrow. "What? I can’t get my girl a phone?"
"I-I-It’s not that..." I stammered so bad that I couldn’t find the right words.
"I do not appreciate calling and texting without an answer and your phone is a hindrance to that"
"I-I-It’s just bad battery, it got slammed during the incident that’s all"
"That’s the reason you need a new one" he opened his car door.
"B-But..."
"I’m not asking baby"
I gulped before slightly licking my lips. I nervously got into the car and he slammed the door shut.
I was always nervous whenever I’m alone with him, but that wasn’t my entire focus but all the weirdness that played today, just who is that lady, and why did she give me that book if she had no intention of jinxing me? I wasn’t jinxed so why did she do that, she seemed normal and somewhat nice when I met her.
"Hey"
I jumped slightly diverting my eyes back to Dace, how long has he been looking at me, or how long have I been lost in my head?
"You’re okay," he said the words like he knew I needed to hear that. And I saw comfort in those hazel eyes of his, my tense nerves seemed to get lost, yes I was okay because he was here.
"Okay"
