Chapter 61: Let’s Study

"You okay?" Dace asked the moment I walked up to him.

"Y-Yeah," I said faintly, leveling my gaze.

"I’m not convinced, baby" he was suddenly so close, earning a gasp from me, his movement was always swift "I don’t appreciate..." his jaw tightened. "...us getting interrupted all the time"

I blushed deeply, remembering what happened. We were really set on doing that in the open, and I bit my lip just from the thought of it, making my cheeks even redder. He flicked my glasses bringing me back to earth.

"Are you sure you’re up for dating a 150 guy, freckles?" he mused.

"I will..." I shrugged "...adjust"

"Although I don’t feel old, I’m the same age as you"

"I still don’t get the werelions counting when it comes to age"

"It’s a long line, trust me" he mused. "Now... What should I do to put a smile on your face? I haven’t seen that cute smile of yours in a while"

"R-R-Really?" Have I not been smiling?

"Yes," he tucked some loose strand of my curly hair behind my ear.

"I want to know more about you Dace"

"You already do Emma" he mused with a wonderful smile. "But it seems I haven’t quenched your curiosity yet"

I blushed. "T-That’s not it"

He raised an eyebrow.

"I-I-I just wanna keep you close"

He chuckled. "I’m not going anywhere, Emma" his hand snaked my waist bringing me close to him and I inhaled his wonderful scent. "Not unless you want me to"

"I want to be close" I tucked his jacket tightly.

"And so do I," he said softly. "Too bad for exams"

I sighed, closing my eyes.

"Don’t tell me you forgot," he teased.

"Yes" I muttered, I have literally forgotten the exams we have next week, I might not survive that, my mind can’t process anything right now. "Chem and math will murder me"

"Not while I’m here, tell me baby, got any plans for the weekend?"

"N-No"

"How about coming to my place?"

I froze in his arms. His place?!

"I will..." his finger ran through my hair gently and I found myself wanting to lean on his touch more. "...tutor you"

It was very hard to make out his words when he did that, but I was a little tense over the idea of coming to his place, wasn’t that like the lion’s den?

"Relax Emma, I know what you’re thinking... My parents aren’t exactly in town. There’s nothing to be scared about, it’s just me" he assured me. "And I will respect any answer you give me"

I adjusted the sleeves of my sweater to cover my hands, standing next to the stairs, Vanessa was in the kitchen and I was thinking of what to tell her, yes you guess right... what I ended up choosing.

I approached her. "Hey, what’s for dinner?"

"Just eggs and... you know the rest"

"Yummy"

"How was school?"

"G-Good"

"It’s the weekend, so finally wanna see what your dearest aunt does?"

"How about next weekend?"

"Hmm, why?"

"I have plans actually"

She faces me. "Ooo, plans" she sucked her thumb which I was certain was covered in sauce.

"Yes, spending time with Dace," I said, tucking my hands under my sweater. "At his place... to study" my leveled gaze darted to her. To be honest, I was expecting a more shocked expression from her, what I saw was...

She sighed deeply, closing her eyes. "I will surely be slammed with a storm each time you say that"

"You’re not angry or..."

"Emma," she began. "Of course, I knew the reason you decided to stay wasn’t just because Juneau was growing in you"

I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came off.

"It’s Dace"

"And you’re against it"

"Will it change a thing?" she huffed. "Fine, you like him, of every guy in the town it just had to be a Devereaux"

"I know it’s because of what he is and true fact, I was scared when I found out about it, I had nightmares, but it doesn’t change the fact that he saved me, Vanessa"

"I know, I know" she nods before walking up to me. "It’s odd because THEY have never associated with anyone. I don’t get why he’s sticking by you when it’s not in their... you know... nature"

"He cares for me, Vanessa and he would never hurt me," I said with certainty, I have only known Dace for a short period of time but I believed in the words I said, from the very first moment he has always been considerate and caring to me, everything with him was real... and right. I may have seen his dark side or his beast side or whatever and I would admit I was scared and confused but I have weighed on it, I want to be with him despite that.

Vanessa sighed deeply. "Fuck! I’m letting my niece date a werelion" she intoned. "I need a drink" she walked to the fridge but then paused whirling. "Maybe I could do a protection spell for you, you know just in case"

"Vanessa"

"You should be protected," she pointed out.

"He won’t hurt me and I know you’re freaking out because I’m walking into a lion’s den"

"Yes yes exactly"

"His... parents aren’t around and he offered to tutor me"

"Hmm... tutor"

"Yes the next week is exams and as you know I have not been in class since the incident, I’m far behind"

"Ha," she nodded. "I really hope it’s tutoring"

I shrugged. "Of course what else would it be?"

~

"So how did it go? What did she say?"

"Aside from trying to convince her that it’s all but study and..." I sat on my bed. "...walking in a lion’s den, she took it quite well or not"

"She said yes?"

"Judging from her expression it seems close to it"

"I see"

"You sound like you were hoping for a no"

"I was Emma, your family... in the past" he paused. "We didn’t quite go along"

"I know," I said faintly.

"But that doesn’t decide anything right now... that was in the past"

I could feel he was smiling right now, I could tell.

"Pick you up tomorrow"
