Chapter 522: The Roommate

EMMA

~

I groaned, feeling the softness of my pillow as I snuggled into it more allowing the comfort to bring a smile to my lips.

"Dace" I grumbled, licking my lips. I opened my eyes, meeting with an empty room and a bed. Disappointment found my features the more I looked around and hoped I might see him but I came up with nothing.

He never came

I buried my face in my hand thinking about everything that happened last night. I could think of every detail without fail. It did happen and here I thought I dreamt the whole thing or perhaps hallucinated it because of how good it was. Even though it was real as anything I was hopeful I might see him but I was wrong. Last night was just a bubble of fantasy we both trapped ourselves in, it was temporary ecstasy.

I forced my body off the bed in great need of a shower. I stopped when I caught my reflection in the mirror, I was just in my panties and my hair looked like a bed nest. Just how wild was last time? I remember touching myself and riding my pillow like a cowgirl.

Instinctively I looked to the chandelier and a thought caused my body to ignite in flame. Is he watching me right now? I bet he is... watching. That’s all he will ever do, will it? Just stay there behind the cameras and not come to me. I voiced what he wanted, I told him I needed him or didn’t he believe me, because I was drunk?

I wasn’t completely sober and I knew what I needed. It’s hard now thinking about it with a clear head, it gave me a headache but I can’t mistake the anger burning deep in my chest.

I flipped my middle finger wherever his cameras might be as I walked to the bathroom to freshen up.

~

"Morning!" I chirped.

"Ugh, not so loud!" Hayden groaned, holding a cup close to her chest like it was the only thing keeping her sane. "How are you so fucking bubbly this morning. It’s making it seem as If only I had all the fun last night. Do you remember most of it? I woke up passed out here" she yawned.

"Yesterday was fun alright," I said, biting my bottom as the memories plagued me. I subconsciously became hot, causing me to use my hand to fan myself.

"What are you doing?" Hayden asked suspiciously.

"Nothing" I breathed taking labored breaths as I forced my hair into a bun.

She rolled her eyes. "You look hot and the heater isn’t that high up"

"Really? It’s just so hot" I swallowed. "Oh, you’ve been reading?" I asked as I kept my eyes on the book on the coffee table, hoping to change the topic and it worked.

"Yeah, something doesn’t sit well with me," she said, unfolding her legs from the couch and moving closer to the book, setting her cup on the table. "I couldn’t stop thinking about your encounter with Tessa"

"What about it?"

"You know what I explained about the dead having the habit of reliving their last moments before they die. It could be anyone, anyone who doesn’t know of their demise but what is even rare is with someone they had no attachments with, in the land of the living. Like your encounter with Tessa"

"Yeah, that’s what you said, I already know that"

"The reliving part though," she said. "Think about it"

"You got me lost there, Hay," I said, getting more stupefied.

"That’s it, Emma, Tessa was reliving her last moments but with you"

I blinked. "Yes?"

"The last moment she relieved with you was with someone else" she explained. "Emma who was her roommate before you"

My heart slammed a loud beat and realization struck me. This means everything I went through with Tessa already happened, which explained many things, how I knew the color of the gown she wore to her party. It’s freaking deja vu but in a ghoulish way possible.

Could it be...

"B-But Wendy said Tessa went to a party alone and she doesn’t seem like someone who had a close relationship with her" I explained.

Wendy was like a ghost to this house to me, I can already imagine her behaving that way with Tessa.

Hayden raised an eyebrow. "And you believe her?"

I swallowed a lump in my throat.

"This could mean that Tessa never attended that party alone. What if she saw you as Wendy? And everything you experienced was exactly the same with Wendy? Think about it"

"It could be"

"We need to find out more from Wendy, I think there’s something she’s not telling us"

I’m starting to believe so too, the dots are connecting in the oddest way possible. I still can’t believe my first week in JU was all a deja vu with a ghoul.

Nothing can ever be normal for me, can it?

~

"Are you sure about this?" I asked for the tenth time. I just finished my classes. I hoped Hayden would change her mind before then. Why did I want her to change her mind again?

Yeah! Because Wendy isn’t exactly approachable, she hated my guts already. From her perspective, I wasn’t just a rich brat but a freak who talked about ghosts.

"Affirmative" Hayden replied.

"Great!"

"Don’t you wanna know what happened to Tessa at that party? I mean it’s her ghoul haunting you not me, tell that to that dark cloak around you if you wanna get rid of it"

"Okay okay" I surrendered. "Let’s do this"

She smirked as if her convincing plan worked. At the corner of my eye, I spotted Wendy stepping out from one of the lecture halls, following the others along the hallway, as usual, she had her headset on.

"Let me handle this," I told Hayden before stepping into the crowd to meet Wendy.

Her eyes met mine instantly and she came to a halt, counting her steps until she stopped. She didn’t bother to take off her headset.

"What do you want?" she demanded.

"Hey," I began. "I just finished class and I saw you..." I pointed to wherever she came from. "I thought I should come say hi"

"Nice try"

"For what?" I asked innocently.

"You’re not exactly a bad liar are you?" She pointed behind me and I followed.

Fuck! Hayden doesn’t know how to be discreet, she’s clearly staring at us while leaning against a wall.

"Your creepy girlfriend and you are stalking me"

I snapped my eyes back to Wendy.

"I could report you for that"

"Look I’m not stalking, trust me I have had enough of stalking"

"So what do you want?" she folded her arms, tilting her head.

"It’s about Tessa"

"Again why do you care about someone you have never met?"

"I might know her"

She narrowed her eyes. "No, you don’t"

"In ways you might not understand" I took a step closer. "I know she was always such a chatter mouth and followed you around, you might not have known it then but she eased your loneliness. Just as much as you hated to see her every morning you still anticipated it because with her your day seemed brightened"

Her arms slowly unfolded from her chest and her eyes widened. This time it wasn’t boredom or disgust, it was true panic. "Who the fuck are you are?" she took a step back.

"I—" she bolted before I could finish.

I mentally cursed before turning to Hayden and shrugged who gave me a look to chase after her and so I did.

"Wendy, wait!" I ran through the crowd, up the stairs, and to the other hall and made the next turn.

"Let me go!"

Wendy?

"Help!"

"Wendy!" I halted when I found her dangling with her off the floor.

"Seemed like you wanted to talk with her urgently, lioness," Sam said, holding onto Wendy’s coat. "So I caught her for you" I never realized how short Wendy was until now, Sam practically looked like a giant and he wasn’t even up to Dace’s height.

"What is it with you people!" she yelled.

"Sam put her down, you’re scaring her!"

"Okay" he dropped her, and she slammed her back on the floor hard.

"Sam!" I snapped with a warning look.

He shrugged. "You said drop her"

"Hey!" Hayden came into view, drawing sharp breath from her run. "What did I miss?"

We both turned to the scene, Wendy was glaring daggers at Sam.

"Whoa is that the bodyguard? He’s hot!"

I sighed walking to Wendy, upon seeing me she shifted but stopped when her back found the wall. She looked at all three of us like we were the bringers of her nightmare.

"I’m not going to hurt you okay?" I had never seen anyone as terrified as her and this was Wendy, the very person who always seemed annoying to everyone and did whatever the fuck she wanted and now she looked like a deer in headlights.

"You guys aren’t normal," she said gulping, like the realization struck her.

"What do you mean?"

"You’re like them,"
