BLOOD LEGACIES -
Chapter 508: A Big Step
Chapter 508: A Big Step
It took me hours to get settled in, I was eager to get everything in order as soon as possible. I part away from the shelf folding my arms as I observe my work. My entire book fits into that shelf and there is enough space if I need more. It mostly consists of my fav books, manga, and school books. I had so many but the shelf helped sort out the chaotic mess.
How convenient.
Unable to stop, I walked to my bed and grabbed my phone but my mom’s call came in.
"Hey Mom," I chirped as I sat on the floor with folded legs, going through the remaining stuff. I was already exhausted and my eyelids were heavy.
"Hey sweetie, so tell me everything, I’ve five minutes before I’m back on the clock"
I giggled. "Well, I am all settled in, surprisingly"
"That’s great! Please tell me your roommates are nice at least"
"Just two of them, I don’t have an impression of them yet"
Except for the rude girl, I don’t want to mention her right now. I know nothing of her enough not to mention. I’ve known a fair share of people not to judge them at the first meeting.
"Two? I thought we were expecting five!" she gasped.
I did too. "Mom," I began as my suspicion grasped me again, briefly I took a long look around my room. It was everything I would ever want, even better.
"Is something wrong?" she asked in a panicked voice.
"No no, I’m good" I assured but that didn’t stop her from jumping to conclusions and I don’t blame her. It’s been a tough year for all of us and we’re recently trying to enjoy the flow of life however we can. I decided to take this big step.
"Are you sure sweetie, maybe we rushed right? We can—"
"Mom, months of therapy can’t go down the drain like that, alright?"
"I know I know," she sighed. "It was all you, through it all, you’re so brave,"
"And you," I said softly with a smile curling up my lips. My mom was there with me every step of the way, it was hard to move on but with her, I knew I could do anything. It was a process we both saw through together.
"So what were you saying?" I noticed she sniffed in the background and I cleared my throat.
"My room, I mean the entire dorm was remodeled"
"Remodeled, hmm you’re lucky then"
"No Mom, you don’t understand, they said the top floor was rented out for me and..." I paused looking around the spacious area. "Everything and I mean everything was done to my taste down to the tees"
"Oh," she chimed. "We surely couldn’t afford that"
"No, we couldn’t, not even my bank account" I mean my bank account was decent with the work I put in the shop and all but I can’t afford something like this. "You’re thinking what I’m thinking right?"
"You-know-who?" she asked suspiciously.
I nodded even though I knew she couldn’t see me. I played around with the tip of my shirt with my finger. "But I doubt it"
"It could be, you know"
"No it can’t," I said in a shifty voice. "It can’t," I voiced to myself.
My mom sighed. "Well the good thing is you have the whole space to yourself, you know you were always grumbling about sharing a dorm with many others" she teased.
I laughed softly.
"Sweetie?" she said softly. "It’s gonna be okay" There was more meaning to her words, a thousand words hidden with that simple sentence. In that moment I trusted in it because those were the words she always told me as she held me through my nightmares.
"I love you"
"I love you too sweetie"
The call ended but I remained in that position with the phone to my ear, I closed my eyes briefly, sighing, before turning to the windows. It’s raining heavily in fact, it’s a good thing I am all settled in.
I dropped the phone and walked through the window folding my arms, watching as the rain poured against the window and the trees waved around by the breeze. Typical Juneau weather. It always brought out that sense of nostalgia that always hit like a ton of bricks.
I darted my eyes to the table beside me and grabbed the picture frame I dropped there.
It was a picture we took one year ago when we reunited with my mom and aunt, it just happened randomly and there it was... the perfect picture. I caressed Vanessa’s face with longing. I wish you were here.
There were so many things I wanted to tell her and hear her say, but I reserved them all for my inner thoughts and wishes before I went to bed. I know wherever she was, she would hear my heart speaking to her.
I dropped the frame back eyeing the picture one more time before going back to fix my things. I arranged my wardrobe, it was large, like a walk-in space, and my clothes filled most of the spaces, as well as my shoes.
After an hour of more arrangement, I finally decided I was not hungry, I was too tired to eat so I slumped down on my bed and passed out from exhaustion.
~
I jolted awake from my alarm, looking around distorted before grabbing my bearings. I dropped to the bed holding my head. For what it’s worth that scared the shit out of me, as intended. I turned off the alarm and sighed to myself.
My eyes were on the chandelier just above my bed, hearing a familiar ping sound I grabbed my phone and found multiple messages from Grayson, Hayden, and Emilia. Their messages came when I was fast asleep, so many and I couldn’t reply to them all. Maybe later.
I get off my bed to get ready for the day. The first thing I needed was a little run in the morning, which became a thing through my healing process. It’s early so I shouldn’t worry about many people. Jogging was a fresh breath of air and a great start for the day. With my headset blasting my favorite tunes and my legs getting to work. My muscles worked and the tender pounding of my heartbeat was liberating.
I used this opportunity to sightsee the area, the school was quite big, with so many things to see. The sun was barely out but the street light helped with the view. I stopped to take a breather, checking my watch. Whoa that’s record-breaking.
I fished out my phone from my pouch to check my map, I was so far from the dorm. So I guess one more lap back to it was enough to call it a day.
~
When I got back to the dorm and headed for the kitchen, Tessa was standing sleepily in front of a coffee maker practically dozing every minute.
"Morning" I chipped in while walking to grab a bottle of water.
"Heyyyy" she drew, grabbing a cup to turn a cup of coffee. Her response was odd because of how energetic she was yesterday.
"Are you okay?" I asked out of curiosity.
She smiled sluggishly at me before bringing the cup to her lips and saying. "I haven’t had my coffee yet"
Well that explains it, everyone needed their boost.
"Ha that’s better" she moaned at the first taste before chugging the whole thing. "So Heiress, did you sleep alright?"
"Yes and more importantly, I’m no heiress"
"They always say that," she waved me off. "Don’t worry your secret’s safe with me" she whispered with a finger on her lips and I was forced to roll my eyes.
She’s convinced I’m some Heiress which was far from that description.
"So what are you here for?" she suddenly asked curiosity piquing in her brown eyes.
I opened the bottle cap. "Just something to get into, just need the basic then I’m good"
"So like three years?"
I made a thoughtful face. "Yeah something like that"
"In what?"
"Creative writing"
She raised an eyebrow at my answer. "I thought you were going for Business or something, you know being an Heiress"
I giggled. "Once again not an Heiress," I said, grabbing a pack of bread from the top cupboard to fix myself a toast. "I always loved the books, I still love them. I never put much thought into it but getting to write my imagination on a page is something I’m looking forward to. Letting others know how your mind works without revealing too much"
"Truly inspiring for an Heiress if you ask me"
I rolled my eyes. "And you, what are you here for?"
"Not as inspiring as you, obvi’..." She turned another coffee into her cup. "Just here for a shot, everyone wants to attend JU"
"You’re not from Juneau are you?"
"Nope," she shrugged.
"And Wendy?" I asked about the girl I saw yesterday.
"Not too, both newbies to this side of this country"
Many outsiders come to JU? Well, that’s interesting but I can’t sense if she’s supernatural, we don’t exactly walk around with a tag.
"I’m sure Jueanu has so many amazing things to offer!" she squeaked excitedly.
I chuckled nervously.
