Chapter 501: Dreams Apart

LUTHER

~

"We’re close," I said. "Very close, it’s up to Emmaline now. Do you think she can do it?" I asked with a smirk, slowly turning to my guest. "Wanna bet?"

"What you’re doing is wrong," she whispered. "You’re dealing with forces greater than you"

"Oh come on, where’s the fun if you aren’t in agreement" I slid my hands into my pockets, slowly stalking toward her. "We’re partners aren’t we?"

"Partners?" she chuckled but it was a weak sound. "Compulsion doesn’t make us partners" Her fingers fidgeted nervously, trembling with each movement reminding me of Emmaline.

Emmaline.

She’s been clouding my thoughts more than lately, it was ecstasy manipulating her, seeing the fear in her eyes, watching her tremble and betray the people she claimed to love. But having her in my thoughts constantly wasn’t something I should welcome.

It was like a disease slowly eating me up from inside my brain. I have to put an end to this disease. I have a goal to accomplish and I will without letting something as trivial as emotion take control.

Those were useless and I do not need useless things.

"We’re partners," I pressed. "Vanessa"

She gulped, tears slowly sliding down her cheeks. She sniffed, trying desperately to keep herself from breaking. A simple compulsion was enough to make her do my bidding. I made her forget, but I needed her once again to complete my plans. The moment I unlocked her memories, she broke into tears, hating herself for what she had done—allowing the enemy to walk into her peaceful town.

"You will do one more thing for me, Vanessa"

"No, no" she broke into tears. "Please no more" she trembled.

I placed my hand on the armrest and leaned in closer to her. "Don’t be afraid, you’re not hurting anyone," I said, gently placing my hand against her cheek. She trembled beneath my touch. "Yet."

"Please"

"Everything should be perfect and you will be the matching piece I need" My fingernails elongated as I pressed my thumb against the side of her head. Her lips parted, but no sound escaped. Black veins crawled across her forehead before vanishing, as if swallowed by her skin.

"Go now," I leaned away. My message was clear; there was no need to speak it. She nodded slowly before rising to her feet to leave, slamming the door shut. I pulled a handkerchief from my pocket and wiped the blood off my fingernail with a scowl on my face.

I didn’t want to do this but I’m running out of time. Even though I have manipulated Emmaline enough to keep this away from Dace. I knew I shouldn’t underestimate him.

Forgive me, Emmaline.

"How is she?" I asked one of my men standing behind me.

"The witch clan"

I nodded, everything was still flowing smoothly then.

"Dace Devereaux came a few hours later"

I paused my wiping action, my molars grinding together. "And did he meet with her?"

"No, with Owen Sherman. Dace Devereaux and the Countess did not make contact"

They didn’t. However, I’m willing to bet my life that he knows. It’s too soon. It is a good thing I’m already a step ahead.

"Create a disturbance in the east, that will pull his attention"

EMMA

"Hayden!" I called. She’s right there but I can’t reach her. The further I ran the more far away she was. I kept running after her to no end until I finally gave out, my breathing ragged as I pressed a hand to my stomach, struggling to catch my breath.

"Hayden!" I called out before breaking into tears and collapsing to my knees.

"Emma" her voice called.

I snapped my head up and found her standing before me, slowly she kneeled before me.

"Hayden" I sniffed.

"Emma" she smiled at me but then her Aqua eyes turned sad. "I’m sorry"

I quickly took her hand. "I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise"

"Emma,"

"I’ll find a way to wake you up I promise, I know why Luther needs you now and I’ll stop him but first you have to wake up"

"No" she shook her head slowly. "It’s not me, I’m worried about" She placed a hand on my stomach and I leveled my eyes before bringing it back to her.

"Hayden?"

A tear slid down her cheeks. "Emma you have to—"

I jolted awake, a pounding headache greeting me. I hissed, pressing a hand to my forehead. I opened my eyes, but they were blurry, so I squeezed them shut, trying to get my bearings.

That’s right, I’ve been up for hours reading until I slept off. I groaned when the migraine hit again, it seemed like the more I tried to remember the dream I had the more the migraine.

What did I even dream about? Fuck it hurts. I shook my head before going through the last page I read when I drifted off. I was looking for a way to wake Hayden up.

She was in a vulnerable state right now, making her an easy target and not safe. Luther might just decide he didn’t need me anymore and plan something more deadly. I knew Owen had searched every nook and cranny of this place, but I had to try as well. There might be something he missed or a detail that could reveal itself.

I have one day to go before Luther destroys everything I love, he’ll be merciless about it and I could feel it. Perhaps it is the bond warning me. I hated it, but now I could really use it.

I know what Luther’s plan is, the more reason I need to wake Hayden up.

I paused, my eyes narrowed. I rose to my feet looking around. Thats it!

I suddenly remembered how I knew about this place, seeing the library and coming to read here.

Dreamwalking!

"Yes!" I rejoiced, jumping and screaming to myself in excitement. Anyone would think I’m losing my fucking mind but there’s no one here so fuck it!

"What’s the excitement all about?"

"Jesus!" I squealed, backing away. My wide eyes were on Owen.

"Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you"

"Don’t do that again!" I growled. " I found a way"

"What way?"

"I know how to wake Hayden up"

His eyes slowly widened. "I searched this place from top to bottom but I didn’t find a thing"

"Remember how I told you I knew about this Library before we even discovered it?"

"Yeah?"

"Dreamwalking" I voiced.

"Dreamwalking," he said, and then the realization struck him hard. "Emma that’s..."

I grabbed a book and walked to him, pointing to a page. "Hayden is in some kind of dream, I can walk it with the right spell"

"That’s risky!"

"I have done it before unconsciously and nothing happened, what’s the worst that could happen if I do it cautiously?"

"I know but it—"

"I’m not asking permission," I said sternly. "I don’t have much time"

"What do you mean by that? Emma please talk to me, trust me"

"The last time I trusted you I died," I said, storming past him in anger.

"Dace came!"

I froze in my spot and twirled at him.

"What?"

"Emma" he breathed. "I think a war might break out" he confessed. "So please tell me does this involve Hayden? You have to tell me please"

Does Dace know? No, he shouldn’t.

"I-If I told you... your life would be in danger" I gulped. "Not just you but everyone I care about. I hate you Owen, but dying over this is not a worthy death"

"Emma" he took a step forward. "Whatever this is, you can’t deal with it alone" he pleaded, begging me with his eyes but I couldn’t trust him, not even the feelings he had for Hayden.

I ignored his words and asked. "Where is Dace now?

"He left urgently"

I sighed, closing my eyes briefly. If Dace knows, Luther will catch wind of it. I flicked my eyes open. "I’m not sorry about this," I said, extending my hand. Instantly the invisible force slammed him against the wall, knocking him out. I rushed out of the library.

By the time I got back to the mansion, I had to sneak in once more, knowing anyone could be around and not wanting to take any risks. I hurried down the corridor but quickly backed away when I spotted two guards.

Shit! This just made everything difficult!

I leaned against the wall and took a deep breath, my eyesight shifting to hues of green and with a wave of my hand, I created a distraction by making something smash. The noise drew their attention, and they rushed toward it, alert and on edge.

I seized the opportunity to rush to the door, opened it, locked it behind me, and sealed it shut with a spell. Turning, I set my eyes on a sleeping Hayden. Slowly, I walked to the bed and lay down beside her.

"Let me in, Hayden," I murmured, closing my eyes as I triggered the spell.
