BLOOD LEGACIES -
Chapter 491: Family Dinner
Chapter 491: Family Dinner
This had to be the most awkward dinner I’d ever been to. The dinner with Dace’s parents years ago didn’t rival this, at least we talked even though I wanted the floor to swallow me any moment but presently no one had said a word for over an hour, even as different cuisines were dropped on the table and when we were left alone.
I turned to Dace at the head of the table, willing him to look at me and sort out this mess but it seemed like my mate had other plans.
"It’s nice to meet you finally, Mrs. Adams"
"Oh please, just Vivian, you seem familiar with my sister already," my mom said but for a weird reason she seemed to be enjoying this. What is she up to? I thought—maybe I don’t know—she hated Dace?
"Ha yes, Vanessa and I go way back"
Vanessa rolled her eyes before taking a glass of champagne.
"My most fun memory was when she screamed at me to leave when Emma was in a coma"
She choked on her drink instantly before staring wide eyes at Dace.
Okay this is taking a turn for the worst, is there even a way to stop this?
"We’re not here to talk about the past are we?" Vanessa said between coughs.
"But the past makes the future, doesn’t it?" Dace countered and suddenly the pressure in the dining hall thickened.
"I’m here to talk about the future," My mom declared. "My daughter said you’re her husband and that is shocking news even for me"
"Of course, we are," Dace said casually and I stiffened when I felt his hand on my thigh, the heat was enough to explode my insides and I was thankful I wore jeans.
"But before we talk about the future let’s face our demons, don’t you agree?" he said before turning his attention to me which got me puzzled.
"Alpha, he’s here..." Singe announced at the door.
"Here we go," Emilia mumbled before rubbing her forehead.
I locked my gaze on Grayson. "We have to stop this" he mouthed in words only I could hear.
I want to, but I don’t know what I should stop. The doors opened and Owen walked in.
"No" I glared at Dace who didn’t spare a look. "Dace!"
"Sherman" Dace said amused, it was twisted and dark and I believe at that moment the only thing keeping him from shifting and leaping at Owen to rip him to shreds was his hand resting on my thighs, it felt like an iron hold now. It hurt because I could feel his claws almost digging in. I’m not even sure he’s mentally aware of his claws.
Shit! I think he zoned out again.
"Devereaux" Owen said passing a look at the table, he didn’t want to be here and I knew that much, this was enforced.
"Dace" I mumbled before looking at him again, slowly I reached for his hand and gripped it hard.
He blinked not once but twice and then a smile found his lips but it didn’t turn the situation for the better. "Sherman, nice of you to join us"
"Did I have a choice?"
"Dace, there is no need for Owen to be here, this is between the family, right? No offense Owen" Vanessa said.
"Gladly none taken"
"Oh Vanessa, Owen is pretty much family" Dace mused. "Seat"
It wasn’t a request.
He gulped visibly before taking a seat beside my mom.
"I’m sorry about this Vivian but I believe facing the past will enable us to talk about our future, as your daughter’s husband it’s the least I can do"
"Husband" My mom chipped in. "I still can’t get used to that," she mumbled the last part. "What does Owen have to do with this?"
"I see none of them knows, baby," Dace told me.
"Dace" I began. "They don’t have to know"
"They have to know... everything"
This is a bad idea.
"Owen broke our bond, it triggered my bloodlust and Emma was the only one within the area so I hunted her and killed her"
"Oh my God!" Vanessa exclaimed.
"What do you mean?" my mom blinked, confused, and suddenly her looks turned into horror.
"Dace stop this!" I yanked my hand away from his hold and faced my mom.
"I-I-Is this true Emma?" my mom asked heartbroken. I didn’t want her to find out this way not like this. "You told me you drowned and..." she couldn’t finish.
"Owen" Vanessa began.
"It was a mistake," Owen confessed. "I thought I was doing the right thing"
"No shit Owen," Grayson countered, glaring at him like he wanted to throw his daggers at him. "I thought you said you did the right thing? You clearly said it to my face that you didn’t regret it"
"I didn’t know Dace would fucking hunt her like a damn prey! All I wanted to do was protect Emma from her mistake!" he boomed. "I only regret it because it put her in danger!"
"You had no right!" Vanessa boomed causing silence to fill the table. She was always calm and quirky, however, it was rare to see her like this, I don’t think I’d ever seen her like this. "Did Oliver put you up to this? I should have known that the bastard would push his son to ruin his best friend’s life!"
"Happy?" I said glaring at Dace.
"Not even close" he replied, sipping from his rocks glass.
I huffed, frustration crawling within me, I think it’s time to stop this shit. "Now you all know," I declared and grabbed their attention. "There we face our demons, there’s no need to talk about them anymore"
"Honey," my mom said on the verge of tears.
"It okay, Mom"
"Emma" Owen said but I didn’t dare to look at him or I might lose it.
"I’m sorry," he said but his words were empty to me.
"I’m sorry too," I said as my fist clenched against my thighs, I didn’t want to be put in this position again, because I had already faced it and it ended up with Owen being slammed against a tree, it showed I’m not ready, I rather avoid it than go in unprepared.
Dace knew this and yet he did this, this is not for me.
