Chapter 480: Pieces
Chapter 480: Pieces
I felt Dace shift on the bed prompting me to be awake. I wanted to turn to him but for some freakish reason, I remained still. He shifted again and his arm around my waist moved. I don’t know what the time was but I knew it was too late, my sleep called to me, my eyelids growing heavy but I tried to fight it by focusing my ears on him, I heard a rustle in the dark, steady yet heavy breathing, I can’t tell what’s happening but I’m worried. So I decided to stop playing my sleeping game.
"Dace?" I said but I didn’t turn. When I didn’t get a response I sat up and willed my magic to turn the light on. Dace was sitting on the bed, his back to me, tensed muscles on his wide back, I just let my eyes feast on his tattoos marking every area. The need to run my hands through every peak of them as if I haven’t done that two hours ago with me bouncing on top of him.
"Sorry baby, did I wake you?" His words snapped me out of my lusty thoughts. Definitely not what I should be thinking of right now.
"Are you alright?" my voice was more like a whisper. "Did you have a bad dream?"
"No, I just couldn’t sleep," his voice sounded weak and tired, unlike him. I knew he was still recovering but he was better these past few days. It’s also like he had a relapse or something.
I stretched my hand to reach for him but he was on his feet instantly. "I’ll go for a run" he forced a smile and I returned it.
"Okay"
He nodded murmuring something inaudible before leaving the room. Maybe he needed to release his beast for a bit, God knows he needed it. I turned to the table clock and groaned when I read the time, it was 4 in the morning.
I couldn’t go back to sleep now so I got off the bed desperate for a change of view. I grabbed my silk robe and headed downstairs to make something to snack on or a drink.
There was leftover dinner in the fridge but I was too lazy to take it out and heat it. Yawning tiredly, I took a bottle of champagne instead, grabbed a glass, and sat on a stool, my eyes on the window as I poured myself a drink.
Seconds to minutes and then hours. I was on my 5th drink when the thunder struck and the rain poured heavily.
"Typical Juneau weather" I murmured, drowning in my last glass. Now I need to go back to sleep. I sluggishly walked to the room and at the entrance, I stomped my toe on the edge.
"Fuck!" I cursed, tiptoeing as I hissed, maybe I shouldn’t have had much champagne, I took a seat waiting for the pain to ease and then my eyes caught something just under the nightstand. Going on my knees I stuck my hand under and hissed when a glass pricked my finger. Ugh, two pains in a row was not good timing at all. I sucked on my finger and carefully grabbed what was under the nightstand.
I pulled out pieces of something, not just something, but... "My phone" I stared confused. "H-How..." I didn’t do this, I can’t just destroy the only source of communication I had with the others.
"Dace?" I rose to my feet, and even though I figured it might be him I still found it hard to believe. I heard approaching footsteps and turned to my half-naked mate. Hair damped, chest running wet and inviting, I would have jumped at him like a horny beast but not when he went completely still and his hazels found the pieces on my hand, a look I couldn’t describe morphed on his features.
"Did you do this?" My question sounded like a sorry excuse to get the answer I already had. "Why did you do this?" he’s not saying a word and it only got me angry. "I asked about this and you didn’t say anything, why?" I dropped the pieces, and his eyes followed them, that was it, that was all I got. His heated gaze on the pieces seemed like he wanted to obliterate what was left of it.
"I didn’t want us to be disturbed," he said in a dark tone keeping his eyes on the nightstand instead of on me where it should be.
"You could have just switched off the phone instead of smashing it to pieces"
He forced a smile. "I know, sorry about that"
I still didn’t feel okay, something was wrong but I don’t know what. "You barely say more than five words" I began and it was unusual for him. "Are you alright?"
Silence passed between us, eyes burning on each other and refusing to believe the rest of the world exists. I thought this electrifying feeling would be forever, but he took slow steps towards me, towering over me and I tilted my head backward to keep my gaze on his.
He grasped my neck in a tight hold before smashing his lips on mine, rough and starved, deprived of the mere taste of it taking in every essence and draining me of air. I want to talk and confront him but I can’t because of his actions.
I kissed him back with the same fervor eager for a taste too. He pushed me back on the nightstand causing the night lamp to fall to the floor, he grabbed my waist but I stopped him. He paused, but our foreheads stuck together, our breathing uneven. The whole situation was suddenly foreign to us.
"Is there something you’re keeping from me?"
"Of course not," he declared, assuring me with a gentle stroke on my cheeks. "I would never lie to you"
I placed my hands on his against my cheek and offered a soft smile. "I know"
