Chapter 459: Predictable
Chapter 459: Predictable
LUTHER
~
Two Weeks Ago
"I will spare your kind Luther, but your hybrid is mine," Dace Devereaux said and I knew what his game was, it’s funny how things can change in a few seconds. Anyone can see the interest in Emma he now holds. He has seen her value not just to me but to the vampire clan and now he wants her for himself.
I don’t know how he was able to figure out what she really is. But Emma is foolish to let that happen. I thought I trained her better and now she just looks like her world has come crashing down. It seems she was yet again foolish to have him grasp her heart like he once did.
Such a pitiful creature.
~
The thunder struck fiercely, the clash of the lightning in the skies. The heavy rain poured like a flood. The room I sat in was dark with the clashing lightning and thunder the only source of light on occasion. The room feels cold and empty but at least her scent lingers.
So intoxicating even though it’s been months since she has last been here or maybe my brain is trying so hard not to forget how she smells. I remember when she would scream from a nightmare, her voice echoing in the entire halls enough to wake the rest of us. Her brother would rush in and try to console her from her nightmares and I would just stand by the door and watch. Fascinated by how feeble one can be from things that they bring up in their head to haunt them. No sense of control even in their own lives, letting trivial things ruin you.
She would murmur to herself saying it wasn’t her fault like a maniac, her pupils dilated as she spoke, brimming with uncontrollable tears. She would dig hard enough into her skin where her wound is, reopening it until it bleeds all over the place. Grayson would beg her to stop but she wouldn’t listen.
I dealt with her trauma for three good years, training the broken girl to be into what she is today and proudly flaunting her as my countess. It was just a formality to get her into my protection as well as her brother. After all, everyone knew of the offspring of Cassius Morelock, the famous vampire who had no royal blood but gained respect due to his prospects. I possessed his offspring and now just like a snap of a finger, they are gone.
I took a drink from my rock glass, eyes glaring on the bed and I could already picture her there as a memory came through like a broken record.
"What are you doing?" she asked with a scowl on her face when I suddenly walked into her room unannounced, she’s always on alert whenever anyone aside from her brother approaches her but I knew in due time she would grow comfortable around me. It’s been a few weeks since they got the truth about their father’s blessing and how none of their loved ones recognize them.
"You didn’t scream tonight"
She glanced away watching the nightstand as if it was a better view than I was.
"Or are you scared to fall asleep? You just don’t want to bother your poor brother?" I mused.
"It’s none of your business" she whispers.
I was suddenly ticked off by her words. "Everything about you is for my business... without my blood, you can’t survive" I needed to remind her, for her to know just how much she should be indebted to me but the poor girl looked like she preferred to be dead. So broken.
"It’s funny those words are coming from you"
"Excuse me?"
She faced me with her dim green eyes that had lost all their lights. "You should be the monster who haunts my dreams. You should be"
"And not him"
She shook her head. I walked closer to her and sat beside her.
"I know how much you wish I was the villain, but it turns out your boyfriend was" I moved my hand to her shirt and she flinched away. "Tell me how does it feel to get your life ripped away from you by the beast you love?"
She never gave me an answer but I knew what it was. After everything he had done, she never hated him or blamed him, she blamed only herself and it became her greatest weakness, something I couldn’t drive away from her. I taught her to use her powers, I brought grimoires for her to study to mold her into a confident woman and rid away the weakness that reeks of her.
I did so much because I knew I would gain. It was only gain and she knew that but never questioned it. She was driving herself as best as she could, to forget the past that haunts her, and in turn, she used me too.
"Count"
Darren’s voice came behind me.
"What?" I answered irritably. I was already in a foul mood.
"I bring news"
"Speak" anything would be better than thinking about that woman. I could only justify the hollowness I felt within my chest because of our connection. Does she feel it too? This hollow feeling, being apart from me and not taking my blood. Is she consumed by her bloodlust by now?
"Dace Devereaux has announced Emma Adams as his new lioness"
I flinched, the glass stopping midway to my lips. I gave Darren a mission to keep an eye out and he was fortunate to sneak into the business party in Costa Rica by taking the form of a human who should have been there, it was risky and he could have gotten caught if they sniffed him out but Darren has always known to be careful, I trained him well after all.
I chuckled.
"Is it funny?" he asked, which only made me throw my head backward and laugh more. "She belongs to you not him, you sired her, and he had no right to rip her away from you. And now Grayson hasn’t come back. The offspring of Cassius Morelock are in his hand and yet you laugh?"
I sighed, taking a drink and dropping it at the coffee table beside me. "I’m amused because I knew something like this would happen. Put two polar opposites in the same room... one with a past that hunts with another with no emotions but feels attraction. Of course, a spark will form"
"Are you saying their bond is..." his voice is laced with shock.
"No doubt whatever spell she used that night broke it. So I doubt there is" I wasn’t even sure myself. That is the strangest thing about mate bond, it sows too deep into the heart. No doubt Emma isn’t connected with Dace any longer but what if their connection was somehow reforged?
Is that why I feel so hollow? How can I barely feel her essence? Like the little hold I have on her, a thread that links us was being severed? It started earlier today and I wondered what was the cause of it.
"What do you plan to do now, Count?"
"What else? Stick to the plan of course" I finally glanced his way. "Now tell me some good news"
He sighed. "I found her thanks to the traces Owen Sherman left behind"
"Good," I said, rising to my feet as I walked to the window, the thunder striking more heavily. "It’s good to know the last Banshee has been found. I can finally move towards the next step"
"And Emma and her brother?"
"Leave them be for now. Emma will play her role as expected" I rolled my back. "My main aim is getting rid of the Dark Alpha. Elias Devereaux created a foe that not even we can match. It’s high time we return the favor don’t you think?" I smirked as I glanced his way. "With his negligence right now it will give us enough time to finally get what we want. Let him reign in his glory, and just like he took my two prizes I will take something far much better and we the vampires will finally be at the top of the food chain as it was meant to be"
"I am shocked Count, you told me nothing of this. You only mentioned the banshee and here I thought you would let Dace Devereaux have what he wants"
"That’s your problem Darren... you doubt me too much. Who did you think tipped him off about Emma’s location in the first place?"
His eyes went wide in shock. I chuckled.
"I will be honest I didn’t really think he would fall for it but he did, just as unpredictable as I hoped" I walked to the door with my hands in my pocket.
"Why did you do it?"
"Because the Dark Alpha needed a distraction, as enticing as Emma can be she played a good role without realizing it"
"But did you predict he would go this far for her? As far as making her his Lioness?"
"No" I frowned deeply, that was my only miscalculation but it changed nothing.
