Chapter 446: Revelation
OWEN
~
"Here, these are the documents with Devereaux’s signature" Henry handed me some papers and probably more to look into.
I groaned leaning against my seat as I rubbed my forehead. I think I might have a damn headache with all these paper works. There’s so much to do and it never ends.
"Seriously, how did you get him to sign this? He’s been avoiding you right?"
"I had to walk into the lion’s den"
He snorted. "I salute," he said, taking a seat beside my desk. On the other hand, I try to go through my newest workload. Running the clan ever since my dad retired was a handful, I don’t even have time for my personal life. I finished college of course but the rest was all for the benefit of the clan, what I really wanted to do wasn’t exactly included it seems.
I always knew that this would one day become my life but at some point, I was never truly prepared for it. But my whole life was for this moment and it was like trying to fill in big shoes.
"What’s on your mind?"
"What?" I answered mindlessly as I skimmed through the papers.
"You look like something is bothering you" I heard the dart make it to the shot. "Score!"
I dropped the paper and leaned back in my seat, fingers rubbing my jaw. "Remember that night we caught Devereaux roaming our property?"
"Yeah? I am not judging but Miles almost shit his pants" he chuckles.
"The woman we saw beside him,"
"Hmm?"
"I think I saw her in his office that day"
"Okay?" He seemed confused. "She must be part of the pack or something, you know they produce like wolves"
I shook my head. I could still remember that look she gave me. "She’s different. I don’t think she’s one of them, Werelions have these vibes to them but she doesn’t I don’t know it was almost magical"
He huffed. "You think she’s a witch or something? Come on Owen. The werelion dislike witches almost as they have bloodied hatred for vamps"
I blinked. "I know it’s probably crazy" I hope so because there is this gut feeling I can’t shake off that she might be a witch. If she’s a witch then what the hell is she doing with a werelion and an Alpha at that?
Over the years we have heard of what Dace Devereaux is capable of after he cold heartedly took his own father’s life. I remember the werelion society being in chaos after that, but after that was the reign of what the supernatural world whispers about. The Dark Alpha. It spread like wildfire along with his fame. It’s no doubt he’s been raining hell on the vampires. That was the only thing I would ever agree with him.
I have learned to keep my distance and stay clear of his pack or whatever it was called. In the eyes of the tourists who come to visit, they would think it was a friendly borough not knowing its mantra each day to stay clear of the beasts.
We have shared the lands equally to avoid any dispute. The only inter-joined places we have to worry about are the campus and high school but other than that it’s safe to say my clan can roam to their heart’s content, I just have to keep the teens from making a big mistake like crossing paths with a werelion. Knowing Dace as their Alpha it won’t end well.
A knock came. "Sir, Vanessa is here" my secretary announced from the other side of the door.
"Let her in," I called back. "Henry go make yourself useful for once"
He shrugged. "But I brought the papers"
"Go"
"Alright alright" he walked to the door the moment it opened and Vanessa stepped in with a bobbling smile.
"Hiya Henry"
"Vanessa!" he gave her a bear hug and she laughed for him to stop. "Still as beautiful as ever!"
"Alright enough" she patted him on the back to let her go. Fixing her heavy mass of curly strawberry blond hair she kept in a top bun.
The door shut behind and she faced me. "And hello to you Owen, you look so much like your father every day"
I smiled. "I get that a lot"
She took her seat in front of my desk adjusting her knitted bag on her lap. "I was going to see Oliver but he’s busy with the students"
"If there’s anything you would like me to tell my dad you can tell me"
"Yeah" she nodded but she seemed tentative.
"Is something wrong Vanessa?"
She tilts her head to the side with a forced smile.
"Is Vivan okay?"
"Yeah, she’s good. Working extra shifts but dinner together is a must, she’s sweet trust me"
"What is it then?"
She mindlessly fiddled with her fingers before settling them on my desk and leaning to me. "I have been having dreams"
"Dreams?"
She nods eagerly before clearing her throat. "I should talk to Oliver, I think he would-"
"I care for the clan now, I’m sure my dad will be much agreeable that you speak with me. It shows you respect me and honor what my dad left behind. So please if something is bothering you or anything that concerns our family please let me know"
She forced a smile. "Of course. You might think I’m delusional or maybe it’s the ancestors trying to tell me something"
I paused. "The Ancestors"
"Yes I keep drifting back to the cycle" she snickered, crazy right?
I gulped. "Vanessa we only experience the cycle when-"
"We get our magic at the age of 4. I know Owen, trust me. Although it’s all fuzzy because of how long it has been for me I know what I saw"
"You’re right" I nodded in understanding knowing there was no way Vanessa would lie about something like this. I mean this is Vanessa, the woman I have known all my life, who taught me magic when I was still a kid. She was everyone’s role model when it came to our arts. And I don’t see her doing something crazy.
"What did you see?"
"Well at first it occurred just like any cycle, the vast space and the skies like the Milky Way and a number of our ancestors. It’s all blurry that I can’t describe it but then..." she sighed.
"Then what?" The amount of anticipation eating me up was nerve-racking. Vanessa seemed nervous now.
"It began like a vision or a revelation, Our ancestors were pointing in two directions. And so I looked" she whispers in the last part. "One in the distance was a girl and by the silver light coming from her mouth as she screamed..." she inhaled.
"Banshee?"
She nods.
"But Vanessa, the Juneau’s were extinct"
"I know, but trust me Owen I know what I saw," she said in a very serious tone. She leaned further in her seat. "The cycle never makes mistakes"
It never does.
"And the other distance?"
Her lips quivered. "A girl with gleaming green eyes with blood around her. And that wasn’t what frightens me..." She rubbed her face. "She looks so much like..." she gulped.
"Like what?"
"My sister and I. I mean this is definitely crazy because do we have a long-lost sister we don’t know about? Of course not! She looked younger. These two directions mean something and I think the ancestors are trying to show or reveal. I mean we could have a last descendant of a banshee roaming about and we never knew"
"I don’t know about that..." I began. "But I think I know something about this green-eyed girl you speak of"
"You do?" she said with hope.
"I am not sure Vanessa and I don’t want to build this in mere speculation. So we will focus on the last Juneau for now"
"You believe me?"
"Of course I believe you, Vanessa, You saw something and I believe the ancestors are trying to tell you something too. How else would you have experienced a cycle again?"
She nodded and sighed in relief.
"I will get miles checking for any records we might have missed about the Juneau’s. History says they were obliterated by the attack centuries ago, But maybe we must have missed something"
And why now reveal this? The banshee was just as interconnected with our ancestors because of their connection to death. Shouldn’t they have revealed this sooner? And what triggered it?
"And the green-eyed girl? Have you met her, is this why you’re sure the ancestors are trying to lead me to something?"
I suddenly remembered the girl I saw in Dace’s office, curled up on a couch with a book as she looked at me with darkness in her eyes. This can’t be a coincidence because looking at Vanessa now I can see the uncanny resemblance they both had.
I don’t know what is going on but I am dying to figure it out one way or the other. The ancestors might not just be trying to tell us something... maybe they are trying to warn us.
