Chapter 353: Broken Bond

EMMA

~

The pain on the left side of my breast is unbearable. It started the moment I was halfway through the spell and I simply ignored it, trying so hard to concentrate because if I stop it will ruin everything.

But why does it hurt so much? I lied to Dace that the effect would be minimal because this was a powerful spell that goes against the laws of nature, rewriting DNA when it happens under natural circumstances was like pulling a nail from the depths of an ocean. But I didn’t want Dace to worry about me getting hurt because if he knew he wouldn’t let me do this, I wanted to save him... I wanted to help him and this was the only way.

But why did it feel like something else was about to happen? Like I was being sunk into a pit I would slowly drown in, I slowly opened my eyes after finalizing my spell and that was when I dropped to the floor on my knees and wailed in pain gripping the left side of my chest where Dace’s mark is... But it wasn’t just my cry of pain.

I finally let my eyes move from the floor and to Dace kneeling in front of me. Pure dread overcame me when I saw the scene unfolding before me...

"D-Dace!"

There was a pool of blood he just retched, clenching his mark just as I was too. What’s happening? Why is the spell doing this? It was supposed to rewrite his DNA, right?

Dace growled, his teeth clenched, and I noticed the movement of his beast hair around his body like he was trying to resist the pain amidst a shift. Strangled, with his throat veins visible he looked at me with bloodshot eyes, and more blood spilled from his lips.

"E-E-Emma" he couldn’t finish as he hurled once again.

I could move because the pain in my chest felt like I was dying, drowning in the hot flames taking over my body.

"T-The spell" Dace came again.... placing his hand on the bloodstained floor to steady himself.

I tried to move, crawling, but it was like each movement was about to rip my body apart from the inside out. Pain was never my friend and yet now I felt like passing out but I fought the urge as best as I could. My hands tapped the blood covering the floor as I tried to get closer and closer. A cold liquid streamed from my nose but I ignored it.

Dace looked to be in more pain than I was because I had never seen him like this... he looked like he was losing his mind with his constant growl like a part of him was about to be ripped out of his body.

"... S-Something is wrong with the s-spell"

The spell

The spell

The spell!

He raised his red eyes to me. "It’s breaking our bond"

I forgot to breathe and what came from me next was a strangled scream as I fell to the ground and wailed holding my chest. I hear Dace saying my name in spite of his own struggle. My vision was blurry as I slipped in and out of consciousness. Screaming loudly like my body was being ripped apart limb by limb.

The burning pain in my chest got so great that I forgot to breathe and then in an instant, I felt nothing else... just hollow and empty. Tears rolled from the corner of my eyes, my lips parted but I wasn’t breathing, I couldn’t, I can’t... simply breathing wasn’t just enough for me, almost like there was no purpose for it.

I felt something cold close to my hand and I weakly turned my head to the side and found Dace’s hand close to mine, he’s flat on the ground in the pool of his own blood, unmoving.

In a panic breathing, I took his hand and forced my limp body to sit up.

"D-Dace" I broke into tears. Shuddering breath and a sobbing mess.

What have I done? The connection, the spark, the sensation, it was all gone like a puff of wind lost to the air. I felt nothing... completely nothing. But I didn’t want to believe everything was over, it can’t be, right? It can’t be over, we can’t be done... the bond can’t-

"Run" he growled and I spotted the dark golden furs coming up and just at that same time, I heard wild movement from outside.

But I didn’t want to let his hand go, I didn’t want to leave. The Rogues were coming and Dace was trying to hold the little bit of sanity he had. And then it felt like cold water was dropped on my numb body as the next realization struck me.

He’s forgetting me.

I gasped when he suddenly grabbed my neck in a bruising hold and I looked into his dark golden eyes as the emotions slipped away.

"Run or I will rip you to pieces"

"No" I broke. "No, no!"

"I can’t control it anymore... you’re slipping from my mind and I can’t stop it, If you stay here any longer..." he ducked his head in pain and looked back at me. "Either they kill you or I will"

"I’m sorry, I’m sorry" I bawled. "I didn’t know, I-"

I yelped when he pushed me off him and I dropped to the floor with a cry of pain.

"RUN!"

I heard bones snapping, and his growls got deeper until it was animalistic.

I forced my body to stand, leaning against the wall for support as my breath shuddered loudly watching as Dace’s beast took over. I called to him from the top of my lungs hoping I would be able to reach him, but no... it was taking over and the familiarity from his eyes was gone and all that was left was pure darkness.

Our bond was gone, he doesn’t remember me.

I forced my body off the wall and I ran through the back of the house as I heard crashes from the window knowing it was Rogues. I ran and didn’t stop... even as my body ached.

Dace’s last wish was for me to run because he now saw me as a threat and the Rogues came sensing that. Even as he was losing me, he still considered my safety and as the pathetic girl I was, I ran away from my heart.
