Chapter 341: Where My Happiness Lies
Chapter 341: Where My Happiness Lies
I sniffed, wiping the remaining tears drying up on my cheeks as I rushed downstairs.
"Fuck I’m so exhausted, that hospital will kill me" I heard my mom and I slowed down in my steps. I heard a chuckle which I knew was from Vanessa.
"Oh come on sis, I know you’re stronger than that" she mused.
"Really? You wanna say that? Look at the bags under my eyes and tell me if I don’t look like a nightmare before Christmas"
A rumble of laughter broke through and I knew it came from both of them this time. I was finally down the stairs, but I remained there watching their interaction in the living room.
"I haven’t been home for days, are the kids okay?"
"They are getting quite along you know, literally doing everything together, the connection is amazing. You would hardly believe they haven’t known each other until recently"
"Really?"
"Oh come on Vivian don’t cry"
My mom sniffed, trying to wipe the tears spilling down her cheeks. She forced a smile and looked up at my aunt. "Sorry I just can’t stop it, I’m just happy and angry at myself" she sniffed. "I’m a stupid mother for not knowing my baby boy was taken away from me"
"That’s enough, sis, I mean we talked about this, you couldn’t have known your memories were taken, it’s not your fault" Vanessa assured her rubbing her back gently.
There was silence and I could see her nodding as more sniffs came, Vanessa had her hands now tightly against my mom’s own.
"You know after finding Grayson, I thought maybe we could move you know, away from Juneau, away from all this supernatural headache" My mom began and I felt a tight sensation in my chest. "But then I thought about Emma, how much she loves this place, it has really grown on her no matter how much it has been nothing but danger for her" She shook her head.
"I can’t take it, Vanessa, when I found out everything I can just imagine just how much my baby girl has been through, I just can’t-"
"Hey hey," Vanessa pulled her in a hug. "It’s okay, to be honest, I wanted to do the same too" she pulled away. "But Emma is a sweet girl, she too sweet and fell in love with the wrong person, god I sometimes wish I could have done a much better job at keeping her away from all this you know"
"It wasn’t your fault"
"I guess we keep telling ourselves that but it doesn’t change just how much she’s now connected to this world, She and Grayson are both spectacular and I’m not sure there’s even a chance for ’normal’ for them anymore. I cannot promise you this V, but I fear there is more danger coming for them. And we just have to do our best to protect them"
She nods at Vanessa’s words and they embrace once again.
My body trembled and my grip against the stair wood tightened and it made a squeak sound letting them know I was there.
"Emma, oh honey I didn’t see you there," My mom said quickly, rising to her feet and wiping her tears like nothing was going on.
"Hey Mom," I said in a faint tone.
"You okay Emma?’ Vanessa asked me.
"Yeah, I’m fine" I forced a smile.
"Grayson?"
"He’s asleep, should I wake him to come?"
"No need darling let him sleep. Are you sure you’re okay?" she asked once again with worry in her eyes.
"Yes," I smiled and fought the tears that threatened to fall down my cheeks. "Goodnight Mom, Vanessa"
"Goodnight sweetie"
"Goodnight Emma"
I nodded and I turned, that was when the tears I was trying to hold in gushed out silently and I bit my bottom lip from having to cry out loud. I shakily walked back upstairs, sniffing as I made a turn toward Grayson’s bedroom. I opened the door and stepped in making sure I shut the door.
"Emma?"
I turned to them.
"What happened? Did you tell them?" Grayson asked me, trying to read my features.
I wiped my tears away. "We won’t tell them"
"What?"
"Emma," Emilia said.
After hearing my mom and Vanessa talk, I knew one thing... they would do anything to protect Grayson and me even if it meant leaving Juneau and I knew without a doubt Oliver will support their decision to keep us safe and away from everything. Dace will be alone in this and I won’t be able to do anything to help him. So it wasn’t guaranteed that even if we told them they would help out with the plan. I don’t think they will help.
"We will go over the plans by ourselves but we have to do it fast before the Rogues close in on us"
"Why didn’t you tell them?" Emilia asked me.
I said nothing. "I will call Owen, Grayson please look after Emilia, they can’t know she is here," I said, already walking out of the room and shutting the door behind me.
I walked to mine and slammed the door shut behind and pulled out my phone. There were several messages from Hayden asking if I was okay and it was yet a sudden reminder of another issue in my head but I ignored them and dialed a number, just at the first ring he picked up.
"Hey Emma"
"H-Hey Owen, I need your help, sorry if I’m calling too late"
"No No, it’s okay, what’s wrong?"
"I need help to decipher a spell"
"A spell?"
"Yeah"
"Sure, I’m down"
"B-But it has to stay between us, please, this is important"
"Okay, are you okay? your voice is shaking"
I forced a smile. "I’m fine" I ended the call and sat on my bed running my hands through my face and hair.
Trying to calm my breathing, I heard my door open and Emilia stepped in.
"You’re supposed to be hiding out in Grayson’s room, my mom or aunt might see you"
She only shut the door behind making sure she locked it as she walked toward me and sat beside me on the bed.
"Why didn’t you tell them?" she asked softly.
"Because..." I sighed, closing my eyes. "It won’t change anything" I faced her. "I understand how much my own family chooses my happiness, but my happiness is Dace, they can’t accept that"
"You can’t do this on your own"
I rose to my feet. "We just focus on the plan"
"We don’t even know if we can find Dace in time, we have to find a way to tell them so they can leave town"
"Why haven’t the Rogues attacked? It’s been weeks since that night they arrived, they can’t be waiting for a sneak attack or something"
She narrowed her eyes at my words and I nodded.
"I-I think Dace might have done something"
