Chapter 278: Familiars And A Kept Truth
EMMA
~
I rolled the sleeves of my sweater before grabbing my fur baby, so light and so small in my arms that I had to carry it gently because I was afraid the kitten might break if I made a mistake, so I was as careful as I can and it felt like I had a teddy in my hands and the thought made me smile. I had no idea how to do this for I have never owned a pet before, but I was somewhat determined to do so, the best I can, for this cat has taken my heart the moment I laid eyes on those big hazels.
Raising to my eye level I checked if it was a male or female.
"Oh you’re a male," I said. And it meows to me with my eyes closed, I really thought this was a female because it looked like one.
I took a deep breath. "It’s okay" I smooched him as he kept meowing to me, such soft and tender soft music to my ears.
I knew cats don’t like water, so I made sure the water was a few degrees above lukewarm. I had to do some research online so I would make sure I wasn’t doing anything harmful to it. I was that worried and slightly scared. No kitten was dying in my hand, I can’t take that.
The moment I placed him in the leveled water I was half expecting it to jump out and claw my eyes off as it should but rather it just sat there waiting for me and looking at me with those adorable eyes of his.
"O-Okay," I mumbled, still cautious, was this normal? Maybe not. I grabbed the soap and proceeded to rub him against his fur and as I did the dirt was coming off and I froze when I saw the color of it.
"Wow!" I exclaimed. "You’re strawberry blond"
*Meow*
"Just like my hair, weird" I proceeded to wash it, and it took about an hour before I got the dirt off and he was all cleaned up. A smile on my lips seeing my accomplishment, nothing felt better than this.
"Let’s get you dried up," I said, wrapping him gently in the towel before walking back to my room.
I dried him up with the towel. It took yet another hour but I didn’t care, I was patient until his fur was completely dry and he was all clean and fresh.
I sighed heavily just watching my kitten and then my mind drift to what happened earlier. After all rounds of scolding my mom hugged me and cried and I cried too. But I still can’t believe she knows I’m a half-witch now and all about the supernatural craziness, I can’t believe my aunt told her everything, I never knew she would go that far.
I exhaled again, this changes a lot of things now because I knew she probably knows about Dace too and his family, will she accept him? Or she will be just like my aunt, I don’t know what she was thinking yet because she said nothing about it but I knew she would eventually say something, it was only a matter of time and I wonder what her thoughts will be about it, about her daughter dating an ancient creature.
"What am I gonna do?" I mumbled to myself and then I felt a touch on my hand resting on the bed, I leveled my gaze and found my fur baby touching it with his paws and gave a meow.
"Do you think she would accept Dace? Or do I have to go against her too?" I said. "Because I won’t let Dace and I get separated again, I can’t bear it" I added with a downhearted tone.
"I should give you a name"
*Meow*
"I wanna pick a nice name for you so give me" I smiled.
There was a slight knock on my door before it clicked open and Owen walked in with a bag. His eyes were on me but then it fell on the cat.
"Oh it’s a Ginger cat"
"Ginger cat?" I turned my focus back to it.
"Yeah they are usually the ones with this kind of fur" he walked in and sat on the chair before my bed. "Here I got what you need"
I grabbed the bag. "Thank you so much, I’m so new to this," I said taking out the supplies he bought for my fur baby"
"Let me help with that," he said, grabbing the KMR aka kitten milk formula and preparing it in a small bottle enough to fit in.
"Wow you’re really good at this," I said with a smile on my lips.
"Yeah, some of the others back at the covenstead have pets so..."
"They do?"
"Yeah like a familiar"
"A familiar," I said in puzzlement then I remembered the studies we did about it. "You mean spirit creatures that act like additional powers to witches and warlocks?"
"Yeah," He said, giving me the bottle. "Everyone is obligated to have one, I haven’t found mine yet but I hope I will soon"
"How do you get one exactly," I said as I grabbed my fur baby like an actual baby still in the blanket and gave the bottle to his mouth, he sucked on it quickly, must be really hungry.
"Wow you’re a natural at this," Owen said with a smile on his lips and I smiled at my accomplishment.
"So my question"
"Oh right we just go to an animal shelter, some end up being familiars among them, and then we pick well more like if they like you they take your blood and the bond is created"
"Wait, they take your blood?" I said with wide eyes.
"Yeah, is something wrong?"
"He bit me"
"The cat did?"
"Yes," I nodded and he narrowed his eyes.
"That’s odd because I don’t feel any supernatural energy from it, familiars mostly have an energy any witch or warlock can sense"
"Great so it was just being hostile at me then" I shrugged.
"Emma" Owen began in a serious tone. "Aren’t you gonna talk about why you disappeared when you know you’re clearly not well"
"Well I’m okay now"
"Emma you don’t get it do you?"
"Get what?"
"Your condition was labeled critical you had no chance of waking up and you were heavily damaged in your organs that operation couldn’t even save your life"
A deep cold chill ran through me. "W-What?"
"And you just woke up?" he said still finding it hard to believe"
I leveled my gaze for a brief second before bringing my eyes back to him.
"I’m just as shocked and confused as you are and also relieved. But the question is still there... the only ones who can do what you pull off are the Newbloods"
"Newbloods" I mumbled, I remembered reading about that too. Newbloods were rare witches and warlocks like summoners and Healers, Summoners who can summon dimensional beasts or anything that doesn’t have to do with this world, I knew for a fact that Jean was a summoner. And Healers are the ones who can survive any fatal injury through healing and sometimes healing others.
Wait... I thought back to when Grayson was hurt but then it was like nothing happened to him. Did he? My eyes trembled at the mere thought of it, did he heal? Is Grayson a warlock? A Newblood?
"It’s not possible," Owen said and I was forced to bring my eyes back to him and he continued. "... It’s not possible that you’re a Newblood, because you have an element Emma and that makes you an Elemental witch," He shook his head. "It’s not possible to possess the two, but you might be an exception" he added the last word under his breath.
"What do you mean I might be an exception?" I demanded in a serious tone. And he didn’t meet my eyes right now and it ticked me off. "Owen!"
"Because Emma..." he sighed looking to the side before coming back to me. "You’re a Vortex"
"A-A Vortex"
"Yes, I’m sure you must have never heard of it because there was no need for it to be mentioned. The only ones that were meant to be called that are the Firsts, not until you Emma. A Vortex who is capable of making even the smallest of spells powerful without chanting them, magic is one with mostly them"
"You knew this and you didn’t tell me?"
"Emma"
"How long?! How long did you know about this?!" I demand.
He exhaled sharply. "A few months ago when I put two and two together"
I scoffed. "And you didn’t mention this to me at all, why I kept thinking I’m different from everyone even the others,"
"I didn’t tell you because I wasn’t so sure you could handle it... and" he paused.
"And what?!"
"It was under my dad orders not to tell you"
