Chapter 230: It’s Not About You
Chapter 230: It’s Not About You
OWEN
~
As I ambled into the room the rackety sound of a beeping machine resonated within it. My sad eyes glanced at Emma on the bed, as well as several machines that were keeping her alive, mostly the mouth breather. She took slow breaths that I could barely hear, feeble and faint, her chest rising and falling slowly to the point you would think she wasn’t breathing at all.
I watch Vanessa as she uses a towel to wipe Emma’s forehead gently. She was always there watching her and not leaving her spot, except when she needed to freshen up, she hadn’t gone home too, I was always the one bugging her to get some sleep but she doesn’t, she prefers watching Emma.
"Hey", She faced me and finally took notice of my presence even though I have walked in for a few minutes now. "I bought burgers, you didn’t eat last night" I mentioned raising the package bag.
She smiled faintly at me. "Thank you, Owen" she took the bag and I took my seat. "How’s your body?"
"Healing" my wounds were nothing and I wasn’t worried about them. "Any improvements?"
Vanessa’s eyes turned melancholy as she shook her head, for a minute there I thought she would cry again. "No, still the same, the only thing keeping her alive are these machines" she wiped her eyes and I knew the tears were already falling again.
"Vanessa" I began in a mild tone and she faced me with her bloodshot eyes. "Don’t you think you should tell her mom?"
She sighed heavily and then sobbed.
"It’s been a month now"
"What will I tell her, Owen?" she began in a trembling voice. "That her daughter is bedridden and might never wake up?"
"At least she would know"
"You know I won’t lie to her again" she shook her head. "I will tell her everything I would bring her into the world of the supernatural"
"Vanessa... you should tell her"
She held her forehead, closing her eyes with a sigh.
"We have done everything we could and there’s no improvement... she would get suspicious when she doesn’t hear from Emma longer than this"
She wiped her tears.
I wish there was something I could do. I have never felt so helpless even though I’m a supernatural. Healing magic was lost to us, there was no Grimoire for it or any spell, it was something used ages ago but now lost... if only I knew it, I could save Emma, I could wake her up and see those beautiful green eyes of hers but I wasn’t so sure I could see it ever again and that torn me from the inside out.
The door opened and Miles walked in. "He’s here again"
"Again?"
"Ignore him," Vanessa said, holding onto Emma’s hand. "He will leave as always"
I rose to my feet and led Miles out so that Vanessa could have some privacy.
"He keeps coming back... just standing outside and watching the house, it’s kinda creepy and scary because he might beast out and attack the place"
"He won’t... he knows there’s nothing he can do, as long as those dreamcatchers are here, he won’t even hurt a fry"
"But..." he paused like he was thinking his words through. "Is this right Owen? I mean Emma’s his Female or whatever we heard that day"
"Miles" we stopped walking. "This is Vanessa’s wish and we will respect that, we need only worry about Emma, not a lovesick beast"
"Right" he nods.
And I sighed. "He’s still there?"
"See for yourself"
I looked through the window and I saw Dace. So I walked to the door.
"What are you doing?"
"I’m going to have a talk," I said, shutting the door behind me as I walked towards Dace seated on a rock, his hands clamped together and his eyes leveled on the ground. Seeing him right now was pitiful and unpredictable.
"How long are you guys gonna keep out here," he said without bothering to look up at me like I didn’t matter.
"Just respecting Vanessa’s wishes"
He huffed. "Yeah sure... tell me you aren’t overjoyed right now" he shifted his hazels to me and they were lighter than usual, almost like they were gleaming, his expression was something I couldn’t read but I could tell he had a chaotic mind, bits of hairs on the corner of his face signifying he needed a shave.
"Look Dace, Emma’s having treatment, it will take time"
"And you expect me to take your word for it?"
"What else you got?"
He was up on his feet before I could blink, giving me that intimidating presence of his and how much I hated it.
"I’m only a second away from not separating your head from your body," he said through clenched teeth and I spotted the fangs already dropping, they were always so beastly, nothing about them was ever considered humane, what exactly does Emma see in him?
"But you won’t because that won’t change anything. You can’t get into that house. You werelions may be vicious and beastly or possessive to things but it still doesn’t change the fact that you’re honorable creatures, I will admit that you’re..." I shrugged. "...a gentleman?"
"Don’t piss me off Owen!"
"I’m not," I admitted. "I’m just seeking humor, it’s torture going in there and seeing her like that"
His eyes softened. "How is she?"
"Go home Dace," I said turning on my heels. "Coming here won’t change a thing" I stopped facing him briefly. "Vanessa has watched her niece been through danger a number of times, she believes you’re the source of everything but that day you weren’t. Emma acted on her own to protect us, fuck you should have seen her. I just watch helplessly as she risks her life to save us even though it was killing her. It’s not all about you Dace, it’s about all of us. She took damage to herself to save us and that is a debt I won’t stop paying" I sighed.
"If Vanessa thinks staying away from you will give Emma peace then I want nothing more"
