Chapter 211: A Chat

Chapter 211: A Chat

I’m such a fool right now because I don’t know why I ran after him... I’m following him right now! This guy is a fucking beast hunter and yet here I am, isn’t being around him dangerous? What’s wrong with me? Am I that curious about him?

He stopped and I did too... my chest hammering like it would jump right off my chest. I watched as he leaned against the wall with hands in his pocket jeans, he didn’t look intimidating or anything but yet it felt like it.

"T-Thank you for saving me, Grayson" I began hoping to ease the heavy air.

"Did you find your boyfriend?"

"Y-Yes I did, I was very relieved when I found him, and thank God he wasn’t hurt"

"Hmm" he leaned away from the wall facing me and I gulped.

"Tell me, Emma..."

"T-Tell you what?" I frowned.

"The crossbow, have you handled one before?"

"Crossbow?"

"The crossbow you used to shoot the Manticore on its head"

"N-No I haven’t and-" I paused my words when he took a step closer to me.

"And yet got a clear shot"

Shit! I used magic to do that and I wasn’t about to tell him that.

"How did you do it?"

"How did I do what?" I sounded dumb now but this is the best I could do, I was the one who dragged myself into this, to begin with. This better gets me out of it.

"Hmm..." he made a sound, raising an eyebrow, did he buy it? "I have never been curious about anything or anyone before" he began. "You’re way too suspicious, Emma"

"So are you... of all the places you came here to Juneau to hunt monsters"

"You don’t know do you?"

"About what?"

"The supernatural... you think that beast is the only monster in this town?"

Of course not!

"I-Is there more?"

"I don’t know if you’re toying with me or telling the truth"

"What do you believe?" I found myself asking before I could stop myself, the pressure was just too much to handle, the unsettling yet calm air when talking with him, how smooth the conversation was going despite me being nervous, I was hoping for some sort of interrogation.

I watch as his piercing gaze before my eyes softens. "For some fucking odd reason, I want to believe you"

I rolled my eyes. "You don’t trust me and I don’t trust you" I folded my arms.

"True..." he nods, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I’m not good with people but for some odd reason I can tolerate you"

"Please tell me that’s not a compliment"

His teeth clenched. "Take it or leave it," he said through them before walking past me but he stopped and I quickly swirled.

I saw his shoulders ease, there it was again, that spark of emotion. "Just stay safe okay? That was not the last of that Manticore" with those words he walked without looking back until he was out of sight.

I exhaled sharply still in shock, okay that was not the conversation I was expecting, I thought of an interrogation but rather he was just checking on me, in the oddest of ways.

It’s official then, I don’t trust Grayson and he doesn’t trust me. And I have a feeling he’s trying to sniff me out. He surely doesn’t believe what I told him and yet he didn’t push it, it was completely different from how he acted that night when he demanded why I was there that night.

I wrote down something in my notebook, just a quick study of one of the courses but my mind was elsewhere, thinking about the chat I had with Grayson. I need to find out more about these hunters here and what their goal was. I wasn’t expecting an answer from Grayson but someone else.

So when I got home and we were having dinner, I brought it up.

"Um Vanessa"

"Hmm?" She answered, taking a sip from her coffee while reading a book. She had her glasses on and she seemed to be in a good mood compared to that day. A lot has calmed down but Grayson’s words of that Manticore coming back ruin it.

"You know I’m into novels a lot," I began.

"Yeah I know"

"And finding out everything in books is actually real, are there hunters too?"

She looks over at me. "Okay, where is this coming from?"

I forced a smile. "Well like I said reading my novels got me curious, if every supernatural creatures are real it will be super sick if hunters are too"

She shrugged. "Hunters..." she mumbled. "...There were"

"Were?"

"Your curious nature just has to come when at the climax of this book" she dropped it taking a sip from her coffee and I smiled hoping she would ride on.

"I don’t know much about hunters or whatever because it’s rare"

"Rare?"

"Yes like a flipping switch, we know there are hunters but no one has actually seen them, they are like phantoms, we know of their existence but at the same time it’s like they don’t exist"

"That’s..."

"Interesting I know... look if you wanna know more you have access to the night school library, quench your curiosity there" she waved me off continuing her book and I nodded, that was a start, at least she didn’t suspect anything.

~

Dropped to my bed and a sigh escaped me. Hunters are like phantoms, even though they were here no one would believe it. It’s like they don’t exist and still do, I have actually seen one and talked with one, it felt like some fairy tale right now. I will definitely get my answers. I smirked, too bad Grayson I’m one step ahead of you and you don’t even know it.

My phone suddenly chimed, breaking me out of my thoughts. I rolled over my front to face the bed before picking my phone up and my heart slammed loudly when I saw the message and who it came from, my mark pulsed that very second.

Dace.
