Chapter 200: The Monster Of Jueanu High {5}

Grayson’s eyes surveyed every inch of the place, scanning with his crossbow pointed in every direction. I almost held my breath when he set his eyes where we were, I thought for a minute there he saw me, and with that crossbow pointed I half imagined the arrow would pierce my head because that is the spot it pointed but thankfully it didn’t.

He shifted his gaze to the head of the Manticore, his entire concentration centered on it, he squats observing the head. It was impossibly quiet now and I had to reduce my breathing, my body was getting more numb, the toll of this spell was already happening, but I held on, I have to... one mistake and Grayson will see Dace, I can’t let that happen.

Suddenly a phone rang and I knew very well it was his, he reached for his pocket and brought out a small device, placed it close to his ear, still not taking his eyes off the Manticore.

"What’s your status?" I heard the speaker but I couldn’t make out the voice properly.

"It was worse than I expected," Grayson began. "The monster was a Manticore"

"A Manticore? How’s that possible? Are you sure?"

"I’m certain... it was tough work" he seemed to pause at that moment like he was reminiscing. "A werelion got to it first, ripped it like a sport, I followed the body trail hoping to see the other beast but I found more parts"

"You know just not any werelion can take down a Manticore, that creature marches up with a werelion’s strength, every part of its body is poisonous to a werelion"

"Yes... I know. The werelion I saw is definitely an alpha, it’s the only explanation for how it would have gone head-to-head with the Manticore" he said as his eyes trailed to the rest of the place. "There’s blood everywhere, the werelion must be badly wounded"

"It must not have gotten far"

"I think it did" he rose to his feet. "The trail ends here it must have gotten away"

"The main problem is out of the way, the Manticore was taken care of at least"

"And yet the werelion escaped"

"We both know an alpha must have been tough work for you"

He huffed.

"Find out why a Manticore... a forgotten creature lost to time... is out of the loose"

"I will... but the whole place is crawling with authorities"

"I see... head back, something must have called that manticore we need to figure out what,"

"Yes sir" the call ended.

And I gulped before a faint groan left me, my body felt like I would explode, I don’t think I can keep this up anymore.

Luckily I heard his retreating footstep and I raised my head in relief but I found my heart in my throat when he stopped and looked towards the direction we were, I drew on my breath sharply that moment, my body quivering and the rift in my head was getting worse, please go away, please!

I almost took a breath of relief when he turned on his heels and walked out. I sighed heavily, waiting after 30 mins before giving up. I whined as I collapsed on Dace, trying to catch my breath, the blood from my nose finally stopped and all that was left of me was my aching body, I felt like I was slammed with an iron, I can’t even lift myself, my vision too was hazy so I was forced to put my glasses back on but to move the rest of me was the problem.

"Dace" I sobbed burying my face in his neck, now what? Here we are in the middle of nowhere with no hope of getting out. I don’t know what to do but hug him and cry silently to myself. I felt so helpless and blamed myself for all this, this was all my fault, it was my fault he was this hurt, it was all my fault!

I stilled when I felt his running through my hair and I shifted my face up and met with his half-opened eyes so dim and weak but it was like a spark of light within me was lit and all my worries and fear vanished.

"Dace," I said with a smile on my lips as more tears streamed down my cheeks.

He leisurely reached for my nose and wiped the blood off, worry... covering his weak orbs.

"What happened to you?" he asked in a deep, weak voice I didn’t recognize.

"You’re bleeding like crazy and you’re worried about a nosebleed?" I cried, he was just so ridiculous, what am I gonna do with him?

"Fuck" he growled trying to move.

"Stop, don’t move you’re bleeding too much!" I half yelled at him and he collapsed back to the ground along with me. I bit my lip so that I wouldn’t yelp in pain, my body ached so bad and my head was worse, but this was nothing compared to the pain Dace was in.

"Y-You scared me I thought you were-"

"Dead?" he smiled weakly at me.

"This is not a joke Dace I thought I lost you!"

"I just took a nap"

"In the middle of nowhere? Bleeding out like a tank" I fired.

"It happens," he mused.

"This is not funny Dace, why aren’t you healing? The blood is too much"

"I’m sorry I know you don’t like the sight of blood" he looked over at me checking my badly stained clothes.

"That should be the least of your worry... why can’t you heal"

He flinched in pain but I knew he covered it with his clenched teeth. "Sliver, a Manticore claw is made of them, it’s very poisonous to us"

"You’re poisoned?!"

"It won’t stop healing unless-" he clenched his teeth with a groan.

"Don’t talk, we have to get you treated Dace, you’re getting paler and..." I broke... and I didn’t dare look down because it was a brook of his blood. I was still amazed he was still alive after all this blood he lost.

"When we got separated" he began fighting back the pain. "I couldn’t track your scent, it was completely gone like it vanished, it got me scared, were you hurt? Tell me... were you?"

I shook my head. "You protected me, Dace. Now would you please stop asking about me, we have to stop the bleeding. I don’t know how" I cried.

"I can’t mind-link Emilia right now... fuck! The silver is messing with me" he tried to move but fell again, he closed his eyes and I got scared again.

Was silver really that harmful to them?

He growled trying to move again, he was forcing himself and all I could do was watch him, I can’t even lift him in this weakened state of his. He finally sat but still held me close to him.

"Listen to me" he began sighing, I noticed his lips were the same color of his body now. "I have to shift... that’s the only way I will get to the..." I held his face steady and he sighed falling to my shoulder but not enough to plunge me to the ground, he just buried his face in my neck and I noticed him inhaling my scent, and gradually his body jerking calmed down, it gave me relief that I could at least do this for him, but it didn’t seem near enough to take the pain completely.

I wrapped my arms around his back. "It hurts, tiger, it hurt seeing you like this"

He pulled so that he would look at me, he had a big smile on his lips now that seemed to make him glow. "And she calls me that name I have been dying to hear again" he leaned to my face and licked the side of my face. I had no idea why he did that or why I didn’t feel cringe from it... all I felt was nothing but affection.

"Close your eyes, I’m going to shift now, make sure you hold on tightly as you can"

I nodded hugging him back, I squeezed my eyes shut when I heard his bones snapping, it was terrifying to hear all I did was just hold him tighter, I no longer felt skin but fur now, it continued and I noticed he got bigger and bigger and suddenly I didn’t feel my body on the ground anymore but I was lifted. I yelped when he spun me to his back and it felt like I was on top of a horse now, but I remained to hold him tight just like he instructed.

He began moving but slow, so slow that he growled in pain before with a profound plunge that almost knocked me off his back but thanks to how I held him I didn’t fall off. Next, it was the whooshing breeze, speed, and the sound of the wind passing my ears.

I was tempted so I opened my eyes and met with scenery that stunned me, the fast passing trees, the speedy movement, and the fading moonlight that shone beneath us, the panorama left me breathless and almost impossible to keep up with but this was no doubt a wonder I would never forget for it took my breath away.
