Chapter 111: Imperilment
EMMA
~
Maybe guilt was the reason I didn’t protest with him, the reason I didn’t question him when he said I should go. I came to a halt, before twirling but I no longer found him there, he was gone like the wind, the tears threatened to fall once again and they did, the cold substance sliding down my cheeks.
I knew of Dace’s abilities to detect scent. Maybe he caught a whiff of what happened, and I turned on my heels, but it still didn’t change the fact that he made me feel worse than I have already been. Why did he come if he would only let me go again? I sniffed, this was far worse than how I felt all this time.
I wiped the tears that slid down my cheeks the moment I got to the hall, my sniffs echoed as I helplessly tried to wipe my tears away, they just kept coming, well I should thank the loud music or else everyone would know Emma Adams was crying, I have had enough embarrassment for today, I should find Owen and tell him I wanna go home, coming to prom was a big mistake. My phone vibrates.
I quit my steps, unzipping my purse but then a girl bumped into me, almost knocking me off if I hadn’t kept my balance.
"H-Hey!" I called but she kept running in a panic. She was probably drunk, her clothes were a mess too, did she have a fight or something? My phone gained my attention once again and I slid the answer button when I saw Owen’s name.
"Owen-"
"Emma, where are you?!"
"Owen?"
"Where are you, Emma?!"
Was that panic I heard in his voice? I have only been out for an hour or so, why was he acting this way? I heard noise from the background and I assumed it was the music, it was really hard to hear him.
"Emma, listen to me I want you to hide until I come to get you"
Okay, what? Why would I hide?
"What-"
I heard screams and my body flinched, I saw others scamper out into the hall in a wave of panic like something was hot on their trails, some even bumped into me, repeatedly, focused on getting out.
My heart hammered because I knew just then something was wrong.
"Emma-" the line cut.
"Owen, Owen!" I panicked.
More screams and terror flowed in, I just stood there not knowing what to do or what my next move might be. I heard clashes next and the loud sound of the music seemed to cease and then I heard it all. But it was really hard to see because the lights suddenly went off like the power was cut and the terror increased.
I tried my best to adjust my eyes to the darkness and then I did. In the midst of the disorganized crowd, a girl stumbled to the ground and what I saw next petrified me, someone like a blur mounted her and she screamed when her neck was aggressively bitten, I didn’t need anyone to tell me.
That was a VAMPIRE!
Panic filled me and my breathing inflate unstably, someone bumped into me and I dropped to the ground with a yelp. Shock filled me as I watched the poor girl scream to break free as her blood spilled like paint against the floor and the slurping sound of her assaulter drinking her blood filled my ears, I almost baft! He was taking her blood! Like some damn juice!
I must have let a whimper escape me because the vampire’s head snapped towards me, he focused his red eyes on me, it could have been anyone but it seems like I was the only one left and I was his next target.
He roared at me like some beast, my eyes widened, his face was pale white and black veins covered it, and his teeth were sharpened like a thousand needles. A cold chill filled my body because I knew that particular horrifying teeth would grease my skin.
He blurred to me and I screamed.
But the vampire didn’t get to me, I felt the ground beneath us parted and veered and the vampire slammed against the wall and then the cracks from the wall broke apart spinning around the vampire’s body in rocks, making his body sink within.
Was that even possible?
When I heard an unfamiliar language I was forced to pivot and I met with Owen with his hand stretched out speaking in a clear alien language, his heated gaze remained on the vampire trying to break free.
His words got louder and I noticed his amber eyes were now completely blackened, all the color drained matching the fierce looks he had on.
He spoke lastly like a conclusion of his alien language and he closed his fist.
"Look away, Emma!"
And I did, next, the vampire was roaring but I didn’t hear anything afterward. Curious and I flicked my eyes open, I squeaked when I saw the headless vampire on the ground.
Owen fell to his knees.
"OWEN!" I screamed crawling to him and holding him firm, he looked all tattered like he just had a battle. His eyes were squeezed shut as he drew on his breath, he was sweating profusely. Fighting that vampire must have really taken a toll on his body.
He flicked his eyes open, they were back to their original color.
"Emma are you alright?"
Should he be asking me that right now?
"O-O-Owen what’s happening?"
He drew on his breath. "Vampires," he began. "They came out of nowhere and..." he paused.
"I-I-I don’t understand the barrier"
"I think it’s broken"
"W-W-What?"
"Emma we have to get out of here, there’s still mo-"
Suddenly a hand grabbed him and flung him across the hall and he slammed on the lockers.
"OWEN!" I screamed before facing the red-eyed lady but she grabbed me by my throat and lifted me up to my feet, and they wagged from the loss of gravity, she bared her fangs.
But the ground shifted and I knew it was Owen.
"EMMA RUN!"
I wavered.
"NOW!"
