Chapter 103: Reconnecting {1}
"Spirits are left here when they have unresolved issues or something tethering them back to here" Owen began. "The spirit of a witch or a warlock rests with our ancestors to find peace and transcend" he faces me. "You’re seeing my mom, Emma, which means she hasn’t rested yet"
I gulped. "D-Does this mean there’s something she wants?"
"Yes," he rose to his feet.
"I have only known some supernaturals who can communicate with spirits"
"D-Does this means I’m-"
"They are extinct" he faced me. "The Juneau’s"
The first founding families. My nerves skydived. "Then h-how was I able to see her? How could she speak to me"
"Aside from the Juneau’s, there’s a saying that supernaturals with strong connections can sometimes communicate with them but it’s rare"
I opened my mouth to speak but my words hung, my brain was really having a hard time functioning.
Owen stalked toward me and took his seat beside me. "Emma"
I faced him with my trembling gaze.
"I think there’s a way I can speak with my mom through you"
"You think so?"
"She has been walking this earth for 17 years without rest"
My eyes quivered, I didn’t break gaze with him, I could see the build-up tears threatening to fall.
"If she’s still here for a reason and I know that... I can give her rest Emma if you let me" the tears fell.
I nodded. "Okay"
~
The door clicked open and I stepped into Owen’s room.
"I’m sorry about the mess," he said, proceeding to clear his bed.
"I-Its okay" I looked around, it was quite spacious and the walls were in that 80s design but aside from that, it looked modern.
"Here"
I took a seat on his bed and we both faced each other, cross-legged
"Are you nervous?"
I admitted with a nod. A small smile found his lips.
"Don’t worry, I won’t sacrifice you" he said with a little humor. I knew he was trying to lighten the mood and I was grateful for that. I should be the one doing that but wasn’t so sure how to proceed so I returned the favor with a smile.
"So how does this work?"
"Well I know a spell"
"Have you tried it before?"
"I haven’t exactly had anyone who wanna communicate with the dead"
"Oh", that was a dumb question for me to ask.
"The Elder witches can communicate with our ancestors sometimes, but that was a long time ago"
"Really?"
"Yeah, but I’m nowhere near that level but..."
"But?"
"You have made a connection with her, her spirit, you touched what she touched, you might not know it but your souls are kinda intertwined"
"Do you think that’s what she wanted?"
He strokes a nod. "I think so... spirits do that sometimes if they wanna make contact with the living. Fuck! I have only known the Juneau’s to do all this kind of shit"
"Do you think..." I began with a gulp. "Do you think I’m a Juneau or a supernatural?"
He focused his eyes on me, that question has been bugging me ever since I saw that picture.
"First...." he reached for something from his drawer, and he pulled out a necklace. "Supernaturals are only born when one side is either part supernatural or part human. Your mom doesn’t have witch blood so... maybe your dad does"
"I don’t know about him, I mean if he were I’m sure my aunt Vanessa would have caught that, right?"
"Of course" he took my two hands. I felt my body tense and my cheeks flushed, his hand was warm but not as warm as Dace’s, I quickly backtracked when he spoke. "But you’re human which means your parents are too..."
I leveled my gaze to our locked hands and the necklace at the center.
"But you don’t believe that, do you? You think I might be..." I bit my lip.
"I will figure it out"
I shifted my gaze back to him.
"WE will figure it out, together" he mused.
And I nodded.
"This necklace belonged to my mom" he began wrapping the chain around our hand. "My dad said it was her favorite and she never takes it off..." he said as his eyes grew nostalgic. "He said she would have wanted me to have it"
I leveled my eyes back to the necklace, it was beautiful with a silver chain and a Triquetra symbol.
"It’s our clan symbol, the symbol resembles a three-cornered knot, as all internal arcs look as though there is no beginning or end" his thumb brushed against it.
"H-How come I haven’t seen you wear it before?"
His features anguished. "Because I haven’t brought myself to, it was hard, just holding onto it, it didn’t feel like her, I was angry that she just left me and..." he paused.
"Owen"
His eyes meet mine.
"You will get to see her now... right?"
He nods and I smile, if that was all it takes then I was willing to do this with him, FOR him, to make him feel that closure even though once.
"Then let’s do this" I was surprised at even the bravery of my tone.
He smiled and his grip on my hand tightened. "I will chant the spell but all I want you to do is focus... focus on the day you met her and the last, this necklace will be the link and call her spirit to us"
"Will it work?"
I hated to be the one having doubts, but I wanted to be sure, I haven’t exactly tried this before.
"Let’s hope it does, you trust me?"
I nodded and his smile broadened. "Close your eyes"
I did without hesitation with a deep sigh. The next I heard him muttering some words, in the same foreign language and his grip on my hand tightened further.
This lasted for a minute and I was beginning to think if I should open my eyes or not, but then I remembered when Owen told me to focus so I did just that, making sure I pictured her face, our encounter, a picture-perfect scene that looked like the real deal.
"I knew you would call for me"
At the voice, I snuffed flaring my eyes open.
