Chapter 661: 607 looting three
Havina’s disappearance soon brought a group of scholars from the Tower of Knowledge to investigate.
After three weeks of continuous investigation, the scholars had their suspicions but no evidence, they could not find any incriminating evidence against Li Chengyi and had to leave in frustration.
Moreover, the investigation team from the White Tower Mage also lingered around for a long time and summoned Li Chengyi to assist with the investigation.
Unfortunately, by that time, Li Chengyi had already gone to the barbarian frontline to officially confront the barbarians.
According to Empire laws, combating barbarians was always the foremost duty, and all other matters had to yield to it.
Thus, the investigation came to a halt.
Outside Green Screen Town.
Soldiers belonging to Black Castle, armed with heavy shields and supported by crossbow archers in the rear, formed square formations and moved steadily forward.
On the vast snow-covered plain ahead, large groups of tall barbarians, also arrayed in formation, were equally prepared for battle.
The barbarians looked like primitive people standing two and a half meters tall, dressed in animal-skin skirts, exposing their chests and breasts regardless of gender, with crudely smoothed wooden clubs in their hands. Most had protruding teeth and flaring nostrils.
Even from a distance, the pungent stench of feces mixed with sweat clung to the air.
"Kill!" Milton Knights and three other knights sat astride their horses, holding enormous lances, aiming at the barbarians.
Suddenly, each square formation began to move slowly towards the opposite side.
There were only ten people in each square formation.
In all, there were just twenty square formations. Spread out, they looked vastly different from the battles Li Chengyi remembered, almost resembling children playing at war.
But this was indeed war in this world.
Li Chengyi stood in the far rear, using a telescope made by mages to observe the battle.
Although he didn’t need to, he had to disguise his superior eyesight.
In this world, ordinary people possessed no extraordinary abilities and there were no exceptions exceeding their limits.
Only the different races had tremendous physical disparities, like the barbarians and common Imperial citizens, or elves and Imperial citizens.
Old Butler Buck stood at his side with several guards nearby to ensure his safety.
"So these are the barbarians? They seem quite strong," Li Chengyi mused.
Having gained sufficient new knowledge from Havina, the flames in his Sword Furnace once again increased, nearing one-fifth of its potential.
"Yes, these are the barbarians. They are incredibly strong but slow and not very smart. However, they possess a powerful beastly instinct, making them very difficult opponents," Old Buck answered.
At that moment, the armies of both sides had officially closed in on each other.
Ah!!!
The barbarians shouted as they charged at the Black Castle Army. They endured barrages of crossbow bolts, with arrows piercing their bodies as they fell to the ground.
Yet the barbarians were fearless.
Even the sharp crossbow bolts couldn’t withstand the piercing through their formidable bodies, causing casualties and pain that, somehow, made them even more frenzied.
Without provisions, they would die of hunger or disease just the same. Rather than succumb to such a fate, better to fight for more resources for their descendants.
Looting was the only method.
The clashing of weapons commenced, accompanied by the heavy thuds of clubs smashing against heavy shields.
The barbarians fell one after another, but they kept on pressing without fear. Soon, using the gaps created by the archers running out of bolts, they hurled themselves onto their enemies.
One by one, the shield-bearers were smashed apart, barbarians grabbing them with one hand and smashing them to death.
But the Black Castle Army, natives of the land, many harboring bitter hatred against the barbarians, resisted just as fiercely, with no notion of retreat.
Roars and shouts of barbarians blended into one loud tumult.
Li Chengyi watched the scene, watching soldiers, along with their shields, lifted and smashed to death, his brows knitting together instantly.
"We can’t win without the crossbow bolts," he said gravely.
"The knights are preparing to charge," Old Buck said calmly, accustomed to such sights.
Soon, in a specially cleared space on the flank, four knights holding their lances, accelerated their charge.
The robust horses, covered in full gear and charging at full speed, along with the knights in their heavy armor, carried enough force to amount to over a ton.
This first impact immediately killed four barbarians.
Dropping their lances, the four knights used the spears hanging on the sides of their horses to create distance and begin their throwing attack.
A succession of spears flew out, striking and killing barbarians one after another.
The impact they made in a short time stunted the entire barbarian force.
But the barbarians were not fools, and soon they began hurling stones wrapped in animal skin with full force.
One of the four knights was struck and fell with his horse. He stumbled to his feet with his sword, retreating under the cover of the soldiers.
Fortunately, unlike ordinary soldiers, the knight managed to kill two barbarians with his swordsmanship even without his horse.
"How many barbarians in total?" Li Chengyi asked, frowning from a distance.
"According to the scouts’ estimates, around three hundred or so. This is about half their number. But the key is, the Barbarian Warriors have not yet appeared," Old Buck replied gravely.
"What was the situation before?" Li Chengyi asked.
"Previous attacks usually involved a Barbarian Warrior leading the group. A tribe would split into many forces, each targeting different surrounding domains. We’re just one of them. The main pressure is on Viscount Tislan’s side. Barbarian Mages and the like would all head that way," Old Buck explained.
