Chapter 69: We aren’t, anymore
Michael made sure to swing by the house again after Maxwell and Andrew had informed him of the plan for the next day. Sure, he had given Andrew the go ahead, but he’d made the stipulations quite clear.
Going into a business as busy as the A and D firm was not on his recommended list.
So, he stopped in to help them formulate a plan just in case the worst case happened. Like Andrew basically had a stroke again.
Of course, Maxwell was going to be with Andrew. That was non negotiable. But if Andrew needed to be away from Maxwell for a few minutes, Michael suggested having something that smelled like Maxwell in his pocket. Like a handkerchief covered in Maxwell’s pheromones just help calm him just in case.
Maxwell was incredibly embarrassed by Michael suggesting that, and Andrew didn’t understand why. Until Michael explained it.
As much as pheromones were something that innately came from the body, to get something soaked in pheromones like Michael was suggesting was something a little more extreme. In Andrew’s case it was a part of his treatment. But for the average person?
You had to put clothing that you wanted to smell of your pheromones somewhere specific to get it to stick that deeply. Essentially, Andrew would be walking around with Maxwell’s underwear in his pocket. And he’d actively be sniffing it whenever he got too overwhelmed.
Now both Andrew and Maxwell were embarrassed, but Michael was the one who wasn’t behaving like a child. It wasn’t Andrew’s fault that Maxwell soothed him, and there wasn’t anything wrong with it since they were two consenting adults who cared for each other. Not only that, they were dating, and Andrew’s circumstances were unusual.
So what if some people judged them? It just proved that Andrew cared deeply about Maxwell.
Michael also said he would be nearby at a coffee shop around 2 pm just in case something went wrong and they needed his help. Andrew could tell he was quite upset that he hadn’t been around when Andrew had reacted at the gym. There was some guilt in his gaze when he looked at Andrew, but also a firmness there that made Andrew smile.
With a few more warnings, and making Maxwell promise to make Andrew the handkerchief, Michael left the house for the second time of the day.
Thinking about it, Andrew was surprised and Michael’s lack of surprise at finding out his Mom had started the A and D firm. It actually seemed that it settled Michael in a strange way. Andrew had meant to ask him about it, but with the fluster that the handkerchief caused, it was forgotten about. Andrew only remembered after Michael had already left.
Alone once more, Maxwell, who had been sitting on the couch, bent over and put his head in his hands. Andrew had a feeling why. He was probably embarrassed.
As much as Maxwell was a freak in private, he tried to keep everything quiet in public. It wouldn’t be a surprise to Andrew if he found out all the men that Maxwell had previously slept with met up with him at a hotel. Andrew didn’t take him as the kind of man who would have brought them to his house.
Especially after the whole stalker issue. Which reminded him...
"What ever happened to that creep that you had me chase away?" Andrew asked, approaching Maxwell after he’d walked Michael to the front door. Maxwell glanced up, blinking several times before recognition crossed his features.
"Oh! Are you talking about that fucking alpha who tried to rut his way into my life?" Andrew winced, since that felt a little similar to what he had done. He nodded, leaning against the edge of the couch so that he was close to Maxwell, but not quite touching.
"Yeah, that guy." Andrew confirmed and Maxwell leaned back, closing his eyes as he did so. Andrew ran his gaze down Maxwell’s neck, swallowing as his mind went somewhere inappropriate.
"Well, my brothers found out that he was stalking me, even after I tried to cover it up, so I assume he was dealt with." Andrew furrowed his brows.
"Dealt with? Like, arrested?" Andrew suggested and watched as a smile touched Maxwell’s lips.
"Yeah, something like that." There were a few moments of silence before Andrew gasped.
"They didn’t-"
"We have no idea what they did. All I can say is that I am not being followed by that man anymore." Maxwell offered as Andrew’s heart began to thud in his chest. He’d talked to Ben and Will and yes they had been hostile, but he would never assume that they were capable of such a thing. Even for their little brother.
Shifting his stance, Andrew frowned as he looked down at the omega before him. Maxwell, sensing something, opened his eyes to stare up at him. He smiled warmly.
"What is it, big guy? What has you making that face?" Maxwell asked softly, and Andrew frowned further. How was he supposed to phrase this?
"Does this...happen often when you have issues?" Andrew asked slowly, and Maxwell chuckled.
"Sometimes. I’m not fond of it which is why I normally handle it myself." That only made Andrew more concerned.
"You...handle them on your own?" He shrugged.
"No. I have my assistant to help me as well. We make a good team." Maxwell said. His tone was calm, cool even. Andrew was still having a hard time wrapping his head around this.
"So...your family ’dealing’ with people is pretty common then? Enough that you’re used to it?" Andrew asked worriedly and Maxwell laughed. Staring up at Andrew, Maxwell’s smile was wicked.
"Andrew Knox, are you asking if my family are a group of killers?" Andrew grew flustered.
"I mean, no! Not really! Your brother is a doctor, and you are in charge of...of drugs and...I don’t really know what your eldest brother does..." The more Andrew spoke, the more the gears were turning in his head. Maxwell sat up, before he bent over laughing. He had to wipe tears from his eyes, he was laughing so hard.
"You should see your face! You look as pale as a ghost!" Maxwell laughed, while Andrew didn’t find this amusing. He hadn’t confirmed nor denied anything yet. And it was scaring him. What if Maxwell was involved with a group of killers? What would that mean if he ever fucked up really bad?
"M-Max, you aren’t answering the question!" Andrew’s voice rose, more in concern than anything else and Maxwell snorted, laughter still pouring out of him in the face of Andrew’s pure fear and worry.
"We aren’t involved in it anymore. Does that answer your question?" Maxwell asked, his eyes sparkling as he took in Andrew’s tense form. He looked like a statue, and felt like one too.
"A-Anymore?" Andrew’s voice squeaked and Maxwell grinned.
"Yeah. My grandfather is a bigwig from the mafia world. My Father said fuck you, I’m going to marry the woman he loved, who became my Mother. Grandfather didn’t approve of my Mother because he wanted to marry my Father off for political reasons. Apparently there were several hits out on him until he started making a profit, and then everything was all good as long as Father sent gifts." Maxwell’s smile faltered. "Well, until I was born." It didn’t take a genius to think that there would be some discrimination in the Mafia world when it came to omegas.
Shifting again, Andrew came around the couch to sit down next to Maxwell, wrapping his arm around him.
"I’m sorry Max." Andrew told him and Maxwell shrugged.
"It’s fine now. It was shocking when I was a kid though. Everyone...kinda knew I was going to manifest as an omega from a young age. I was, in my Mother’s words, too pretty. Apparently there aren’t a lot of omegas in our family so they blamed my Mother for producing an imperfection." Andrew’s grip tightened on him and Maxwell sighed. "We stopped visiting them and cut all ties after that. I think sometimes my Grandfather regrets it, but at the same time I don’t have sympathy for them. I mean, who could say that to a child?" Maxwell’s anger was justified, and Andrew smiled to himself.
He was aware of what some people could say to children. It was funny how neither Maxwell nor Andrew in their childhoods made some of their family proud. At least not the ones who mattered in the long term.
"I know. Adults forget that children remember everything." Andrew added, pressing a kiss against Maxwell’s forehead. "That being said, please don’t make me ’disappear’ if I upset you." Andrew said, and Maxwell pulled back to stare at him in confusion.
"Why on earth would I do that? I could just tie you to the bed and punish you for your sins that way." Andrew’s face turned red while Maxwell’s eyes sparkled.
"That’s not a punishment." Andrew protested, while also pleased that Maxwell had no intention to harm him. Maxwell laughed.
"It would be because you wouldn’t be able to touch me." Maxwell told him cheekily. Andrew’s eyes went wide before he felt himself pout.
"That’s not very nice." Andrew said, and Maxwell leaned forward and pressed his lips against Andrew’s.
"Then don’t make me mad, Baby."
