Chapter 192: A scientist without morals is dangerous

"What?" May’s voice was choked, and she reached for Andrew, grabbing at him thoughtlessly, just knowing that she needed to touch him. Andrew’s throat closed up, so all he could do was nod.

"Andrew was missing for about a week." Maxwell’s voice, which had previously been full of anger and rage, was now more subdued. It sounded as if even he was fighting tears. "She lured him out the day after to a coffee shop nearby. She was going to drop off the laptop he had used at the company and she said that she wanted to apologise. I had Andrew share his location with me on his phone, but when he was kidnapped, he forgot it. I knew he shouldn’t go, but I also knew I couldn’t convince him otherwise." Maxwell’s voice held a deep, tight sadness that had Andrew exhaling slowly.

"You can’t blame yourself, Max. We didn’t know how crazy she was." Andrew’s lips shook. "I...she was really crazy though. She said she was going to fix me."

"Oh my god." Rose said, and Andrew swallowed.

"I didn’t know what it meant at first. She also...she wasn’t alone. She had a partner in crime, and guards and the like. I...I didn’t just manifest." Andrew shook. "I was changed against my will."

"Oh my god." Rose sounded even more distressed. May muffled a sob.

"That’s...that’s a human rights violation! How did-oh my god." Richard pushed his chair back, and moved to the kitchen so he could pace. He was so full of emotions, and Andrew couldn’t blame him.

"Are you okay?" Ford asked, and Andrew looked up at him. His eyes were swimming, and tear trails ran down his face, but he reached for Andrew’s hand even if he couldn’t touch it. Andrew was doing his best, but eventually his face just crumbled and he shook his head.

"No. I never wanted to be this. I know that Maxwell accepts me no matter what but I just...I was just getting comfortable with the idea that I could be normal, maybe settle down and then this happened and I just..." Andrew sucked in. His tears splattered onto the table below him, soaking into the piece of pie he had been served and the tablecloth below. "I don’t want to be like my father." Andrew admitted. "And now I am everything he ever wanted. It’s...devastating."

Maxwell wrapped his arm around his waist, holding him close.

"You are nothing like that man." Maxwell’s words were powerful, but warbled, and that only made Andrew feel worse. He was making Maxwell cry? That wasn’t what he wanted.

"He’s right. You are nothing like him. So what if you’re an alpha, it doesn’t matter. I’m an alpha, and so is Rose. We aren’t like your piece of shit father, are we?" May was right, and he appreciated her words of comfort, but there was one glaring, annoying issue that Andrew was never going to be able to overcome.

"I’m a true alpha. Because of who my dad is. I’m not just any old alpha, and I feel like if I was, this would be easier." Andrew laughed, but it sounded painful. "It just proves that I could have the same tendencies that that man has." May’s grip grew harsh on his arm, and he flinched. It wasn’t intentional, he could tell by the way she released it just as quickly, before grabbing his arm again.

"Andrew Knox." She warned, her voice holding the full force of her Motherly instincts. "Genetics does not mean you are a cheating, lying, disrespectful, wasteful, piece of shit. That is how you are raised. Was there ever a moment where you thought your father’s actions were acceptable? That they were okay? Was there ever a time where your Mom, or Ford, or I made it seem like that was something you should aspire to be?" Andrew shook his head aggressively, but the tears wouldn’t stop.

"I know that, but I can’t get past the block in my head that tells me that was for beta Andrew, not for the monster I’ve become."

"You are not a monster." Rose snapped.

"Agreed. You are not a fucking monster, Andy." Richard was quick behind her. Maxwell said nothing, just holding Andrew tighter. That was answer enough for Andrew when he felt the dampness soak into his clothes.

"You cannot, and will not be a monster. I don’t give a fuck what anyone else says, you aren’t one. Max, he has a doctor? What did the Doctor say?" Maxwell sniffed, and cleared his throat.

"He went to Harvard with Andrew," Maxwell started, "so he knew Andrew from then. They were actually friends, but he had dropped contact with him the same way he had done with you. Dr. Smith said that whatever she had done was a crime, but at the very least, Andrew was doing...okay. There was a worry that things could have gone bad, but none of us wanted to worry Andrew about that." Andrew jerked, the first time hearing about that. Maxwell patted his arm. "Your mission was focusing on getting better. I had plans to tell you eventually, but I was scared you’d get mad at me." Maxwell sniffed and any hurt Andrew had at the reveal evaporated. It was clear that all of this was also taking a toll on him as well.

It hadn’t been a traumatic experience for just Andrew. Maxwell had also gone through the ringer at the same time.

"Andrew went into a miniature rut, basically signifying that he was an alpha, but the true alpha characteristics took a longer time to come in. The few theories about why there is such a delay is the pressure difference between regular people who manifest and those who have true attached to their titles. There is such a pressure for anyone from a true alpha family to become one that it manifests in delayed manifestation, and their distinctive traits being pushed back as well. Andrew’s teeth took a long time to come in, and his height only changed fully after he helped me through a heat." The more Maxwell spoke, the more even his tone became. He was regaining his composure as he spoke.

"He was able to do that?" May asked, sniffing. Andrew was sure she was wiping her face, but he still couldn’t raise his head to look up. He was too scared.

"Yeah. There have been quite a few hiccups, but he’s been doing really, really well. Most late manifesters in his shoes would still be confined to their homes, unable to deal with the new scents that were coming at him. As someone who is hypersensitive to pheromones, I was very worried that was going to happen to Andrew. Turns out, " Maxwell let out a small laugh, "as long as he has my scent around, he’ll be fine." Rose tsked.

"God, just mate already. That’s too fucking cute." Andrew flushed. If only that was on the table for him. He didn’t want to hurt Maxwell that way. "I...have a slightly worrying question. How did you escape, Andy?" She asked, and Andrew noticed how her voice trembled as well. Andrew felt like a piece of shit.

This was not how he wanted the night to go. He expected them to yell at him, and get mad at them for avoiding them for years. Instead, they were crying alongside him as he told them about what had happened to him. That wasn’t what he wanted.

"Do you want me to tell them?" Maxwell asked carefully, as Andrew remained silent. Andrew exhaled, shaking his head.

"No, it’s okay. I can say it." Andrew’s throat hurt, but he knew he needed to say it. "I...I realised something was wrong. I started being able to smell her, my ex, and that was when I knew something was wrong. I convinced her that...I was fine with what she had done. Enough so that she might have helped me deal with some of the issues that I didn’t realise were a rut." May growled, anger and rage coming off with her emotions, and her pheromones. Maxwell tucked face against Andrew’s clothes, protecting himself. "I knocked her out before anything could get serious, and then I don’t really remember much after that. I think I knocked out the guards, but I don’t know how. All I knew was that I needed to get back to Maxwell, and then...I woke up in Maxwell’s backyard. I guess...our backyard now."

"Do you know anything? Or remember anything from where you were? Or how long it took you to get home?" Richard asked and Andrew shook his head.

"No, I don’t."

"And we aren’t forcing it." Maxwell stated firmly. "If he doesn’t want to remember, I don’t want to force him. He’s barely recovered, and in my opinion, isn’t." Maxwell was clearly telling Richard to back off, but Richard groaned.

"I’m not trying to force him, Max, I am just worried about how close that place could be to where you are currently living. Aren’t you concerned about that? What if they try to take him again? He’s a successful test subject! If she’s as crazy as you tell me, and what I’ve heard, what is going to stop her?" Richard’s words had a point, and it was something Andrew hadn’t considered.

"We have 24 hour security." Maxwell stated and Richard laughed.

"And the coffee shop probably had cctv and so did the area around it. You need to move. I don’t care where, but you can’t stay where you are anymore. For your and Andrew’s safety." He was very insistent, and when Andrew finally looked up, he saw that everyone was crying, including Jordan who he had barely shared a word with. May looked awful, her eyes already swelling, and Rose wasn’t any better. Richard had inherited Ford’s genes in that regard, and his eyes hadn’t started to puff up, but he was aggressively pacing, his hair all over the place as he kept spinning and spinning.

"Richard, why are you so insistent?" Andrew asked, worried and Richard’s lips firmed into a straight line.

"I’m so insistent because if I didn’t care about what was right and wrong, I could see myself doing the same thing. And that terrifies me for your safety. I’m sure Max has some better houses, with better security. Or you two could get something else. I don’t care. You just need to be somewhere where no one can get to you." Richard shuddered. "I know that Max is downplaying this so that you don’t freak out, Andy, but you need to know the truth. If you were a successful test for them, and you turned out to be a true alpha, that’s big, fucking, news. All of the old rich families are going to be clamoring to get a piece of you, and they won’t care unless you have strong backing. I don’t think the Beckett family will be enough."
