Chapter 148: Don’t talk about my boyfriend that way

Leaving the next day felt easy, and Andrew wasn’t as freaked out about the helicopter trip back. Maxwell was already busy working away on a laptop he’d secreted away when Andrew hadn’t been looking, so Andrew got to spend the time travelling back to the house in his head.

It wasn’t the worst thing. He got to look outside without being filled with anxiety. It was quite the beautiful view, and he got to know the pilot who was flying them back. He could tell that Maxwell was paying attention to them as they travelled, since he was smirking slightly as Andrew chatted away with the pilot. He just didn’t participate in the conversation.

Andrew liked that. Knowing that Maxwell was there for him if he needed, but he wasn’t going to step in unless Andrew needed, or wanted him to. He just hoped that Maxwell followed that mindset when it came to Andrew working at his company.

They hadn’t gone through all the work to get him a fake identity for nothing, right?

Arriving back to the house covered in snow was like a breath of fresh air for Andrew. It was so pretty and picturesque. Andrew loved it.

Maxwell? Maxwell hated it. He apparently hadn’t brought enough layers and was complaining about that. He was grumbling and kicking up a fuss as the security helped them unload everything from the car that had picked them up from the helicopter pad. They were rolling up the suitcases that they had brought with them for the wedding while Maxwell shivered, wrapping himself in two jackets, a hat and a scarf.

He looked like the cutest little bean burrito Andrew had ever seen.

Maxwell wouldn’t accept any help either. He was too busy being grumpy about the cold to do so. Andrew didn’t think he could get any more adorable, and yet, here he was, proven wrong.

Andrew followed the grumpy, cold-hating man into the house as he walked up the steps to his house. It was hilarious because Maxwell was behaving as if he was going to slip at any moment.

Barely an inch of snow covered the pathways, and they were clearly salted. The house was well taken care of. He was just being overly dramatic and a big baby. He was Andrew’s big baby, but he was still being a baby.

Maxwell didn’t stop grumbling even after they had entered the house. He only removed his shoes, scarf, hat and outer layer jacket. He complained he felt a chill now that he had to be outside for even a few minutes. Andrew wondered how he had survived as long as he had in their city if he didn’t like the cold this much.

Andrew had thought it was a one off when Maxwell had yelled about him about the cold, but no, it was serious. Maxwell truly hated the cold, to a level that Andrew could only equate it loosely to Andrew’s hate for his father. Andrew himself had never felt this strongly about something similar.

He didn’t have strong dislikes in the same way as Maxwell. He had preferences, he wouldn’t deny that, but he’d never disliked something to the same degree Maxwell did.

Maxwell had very strong opinions about several things, and he kept quiet about them either. It made things easy for Andrew since he knew what to avoid, but it was fascinating to see it from the outside.

Andrew didn’t criticize Maxwell’s behaviour, and instead went about making him a nice warm drink to soothe his ’chill’ and let the man work while he went about unloading their suitcases and cleaning up from their trip.

Maxwell was very appreciative of the drink, giving Andrew several kisses that had Andrew’s cheeks creasing with smiles as he went about the house. Andrew was still smiling even as he had his weekly therapy session with the anonymous true alphas.

Maxwell and Michael didn’t sit in anymore after he’d had so many of these, but he realised that maybe they should have continued.

This was mainly due to the fact that the Beckett family wedding was brought up, and so was the topic of the new true alpha that was around the youngest Beckett son. Andrew had no idea how to navigate this. Should he reveal the truth? It would ruin his anonymity, but at the same time, he wasn’t all that concerned about it. He just didn’t want who his father was to be known.

Plus, they were getting rather derailed by the topic of Maxwell. He could hear the desire in some of the other true alpha’s voices and Andrew was getting on his last legs of being able to hear it.

Finally, he just snapped. One too many comments about Maxwell’s ass had really done it for him.

"Teacher," it was what they called the coordinator for the group "I have something to say." Andrew interrupted who was last speaking. It was against the rules, but Andrew could feel his blood boiling. "Would I be kicked out of the group if my anonymity was ruined?" Andrew asked and the group paused.

"Uh, well, I don’t see why you would. As long as you were okay with the consequences of everyone else knowing your identity." They said and Andrew sighed. He fumbled with the laptop he was ’borrowing’ from Maxwell before his camera turned on and several gasps were heard around the room. Andrew stared at the unimpressed face looking back at him before he sighed.

"I had no idea that I would be such a hot topic." He muttered and the teacher was scrambling.

"O-Oh gosh! I had no idea-"

"-You’re dating Maxwell Beckett?" The questions began to flood in and Andrew fielded them as much as he could. He wasn’t surprised that everyone asked questions about his love life before they asked questions, or even remembered the answers Andrew had told them in sessions before. He understood.

Andrew liked to gossip too.

Thankfully, several of the alphas who had made suggestive comments about Maxwell apologised without Andrew prompting them. It was nice for them to do so. Andrew would have demanded apologies from them if they hadn’t.

Not for him, but for Maxwell. Especially after they understood how much Maxwell had supported him through this new confusing way of life. They understood what this weird, crazy transition felt like, but they had families backing them. Andrew had been very open about how his Mom had passed and he was no contact with his father’s side.

The fact that he wasn’t truly alone in this, and that the Beckett’s were quite helpful in making sure that Andrew was safe and transitioning into this new life was something that overtook the therapy session. Everyone wanted to talk about it, and Andrew was happy to reveal things as long as they didn’t compromise the Beckett name.

It was clear that they had a name in the industry. They hadn’t produced any true alphas before, and true alpha families worked with them, but hadn’t made any blood ties with them, or the other side of the Beckett family. They all seemed rather hesitant to bring that up, and Andrew respected that.

He didn’t have enough information on Maxwell’s grandfather to speak with confidence, and he didn’t like the man. Out of respect for Mr. Beckett, he didn’t say anything about it, since it was his father, but had a feeling there was a reason he got along so well with Mr. Beckett. Especially after the fingers incident.

It seemed that to the new true alphas around him, it was a positive thing, what the Beckett’s had done for him. He’d basically been a stranger, and they had accepted him whole-heartedly. Andrew didn’t speak of the little things that weren’t whole-hearted acceptance, but there was always nuance to any situation.

That didn’t matter to them. They were just happy to see that another family was so willing to accept him. Andrew found out that the group had a high opinion of him, especially from the wedding. A few of them had attended and witnessed how Andrew had interacted with everyone, and how possessive, but kind he was of Maxwell.

A few had even seen when Maxwell had demanded Andrew take that shot, and were heavily impressed by his control. Andrew was not going to take full credit for that, and did admit that spending Maxwell’s heat with him had helped him significantly. He did put several asterisks around what he was saying, covering his bases by saying that it might not work for everyone, and it was related to how his manifestation had come to be.

Andrew was also impressed that others had been there, and that he might have unintentionally chatted with them while neither of them had known each other. It was a cute moment, and Andrew let them know that they could talk to him if they saw him out and about. He wouldn’t find it weird if they let him know personally that they were from the sessions.

It wouldn’t be creepy, and he’d keep everyone’s anonymity. Unlike him, they probably all knew each other, or knew of each other. Andrew understood what kind of power he held as an outsider, and that was okay. He was in a better place now, so he could carry a bit of that burden now.

He turned off his webcam after a certain point, the teacher saying that he could after he had proven who he was. The session went on a little longer than it normally went, but no one seemed to mind. They’d had a lot of questions for Andrew, and he’d been mostly happy to answer.

He just worried about how Maxwell and Michael would take him revealing who he was to what was basically, a group of total strangers.
