Chapter 118: You look familiar
Andrew was on his best behaviour by the time that Amir’s grandparents arrived. Andrew was a bit curious as to why his grandparents had come first instead of his parents, but Andrew wasn’t one to pry.
He knew all about having a complicated relationship with one’s parents.
Amir’s grandparents were lovely people. They were quite old, with both being men, but his grandmother as he called him was a sweet, older omega dressed in traditional saree in a beautiful, colourful shade of peach he’d never seen before. The detailing on it was exquisite, and he could tell that it had been done by hand. Several colourful bracelets and other accessories in gold that matched his skin tone decorated his body.
His partner, Amir’s grandfather, was dressed in a suit. It wasn’t black, but instead a soft grey tone to match his partner, and his facial hair was well groomed, and his shoes shone. It was clear that the two of them took great pride in their appearances for the day.
They both seemed stone faced when they entered, but lit up when they saw Amir. Andrew felt his heart warm as he heard Amir gasp, and then rushed towards his grandmother, giving him a hug.
Andrew could feel the warmth of their affection from here, and Maxwell gave his hand a squeeze.
"They’re cute, aren’t they?" He whispered and Andrew chuckled.
"Just cute? I can see where Amir gets it from. No wonder your brother is smitten." Andrew replied. The two of them remained watching the scene, smiling, as Maxwell’s Father joined his wife on the couch again.
"Are you two going to sit down? You have nowhere else to be. The ceremony doesn’t start until the afternoon, and we aren’t the stars of the show. Your Mother and I aren’t planning to start getting ready until two hours before." Mr. Beckett said and Maxwell chuckled.
"Maybe for you, but Andrew has a bit more prep he has to do. And drugs he needs to take without as many scents around." Mr. Beckett scoffed.
"The only people who aren’t mated in this room are your brother, Will, and you two. Unless there is something you two want to announce?" Mr. Beckett raised an eyebrow, and Mrs. Beckett lightly hit his shoulder.
"Don’t tease them that way. They aren’t like us. That, and Andrew looks like he’s going to faint whenever mating is brought up. Be sensitive, Tom, the man comes from true alpha stock." Mrs. Beckett scolded, and Andrew felt his cheeks heat.
"Um, thank you." He said, and Mrs. Beckett waved it off.
"No need to thank me. Sometimes Tom forgets himself." She told them, before glancing at Amir and his grandparents. Her gaze softened. "What a sweet family. It’s too bad that their son is a dipshit." Will started coughing from where he had been taking a sip from his drink. Andrew wanted to do the same.
Were they...referring to Amir’s parents? Gosh, Andrew wondered what had her saying that. Mr. Beckett made a noise of agreement.
"It is a tragedy." He agreed, and that only had Andrew more curious, but he doubted he was going to find out.
Especially when Amir’s grandmother spun and noticed him and Maxwell still standing, but just to the side. Andrew felt his eyes narrow, and then roamed him up and down several times. Then, he pointed at him with one long, painted finger, and motioned for Andrew to come over. Andrew gave Maxwell’s hand a squeeze, before releasing it and doing as the grandma asked.
Especially since Amir looked so nervous, while his grandfather was fighting a smile.
"You’re new. Who are you?" Amir’s grandmother asked, straight to the point. Amir seemed a little flustered at his behaviour, but Andrew didn’t mind. Giving a proper bow, and kissing the top of her hand with a smile.
"My name is Dr. Andrew Knox. A pleasure to meet you, Amir’s grandmother." He slid his gaze towards the other man in the suit. "And grandfather." Amir’s grandmother tsked.
"You feel slimy. Come here." He shook Andrew’s hand free, before wrapping his hand around Andrew’s neck and yanking him down. He pressed a kiss against each of Andrew’s cheeks, much to his surprise, and laughed at Andrew’s expression after. "You’re too handsome. I worry about our little Maxwell." He grumbled, and Amir laughed.
"You should see them together, Grandma. I worry about Andrew instead. Max bosses him around a lot." Andrew shook himself, recovering quickly. He laughed, staring into eyes that looked just like Amir’s.
"I’m wrapped around his finger, it’s true. But I wouldn’t have it any other way." Andrew told them proudly, and Amir melted.
"Don’t make me cry, Andrew. I just finished my eye makeup, and I’m in contacts." Amir protested, fanning his eyes. Andrew laughed heartily.
"Sorry, sorry. Not my intention. Max gets mad when I talk like this too. Or, frustrated is more appropriate I guess." Andrew’s smile held a bit of cheekiness to it, and he watched as Amir’s grandmother’s expression relaxed. Yanking Andrew close again, Andrew felt his lips brush his ear.
"Thank you for looking out for our Amir while he was not feeling well. I cannot put into words how grateful I am." He whispered, and Andrew’s eyes widened. When he pulled away, Andrew took their hand in both of his.
"No. It was a great honour to be around to help. I am grateful that Amir even let me be there and help him." Andrew meant each word, and Amir sniffed.
"Andrew! What did I just say?" He growled, and Amir’s grandfather laughed.
"Come, child of mine, let us go back to the make up girlies, hmm? They shall help you get even more lovely all over again." His tone was warm, his gaze even more so. These people truly cared for Amir, and it oozed out of them.
"He doesn’t need it! He’s plenty lovely already!" Ben shouted, and Andrew watched as Amir ducked his shoulders, embarrassed.
"Wait till he gets older. You might not say the same then." His grandfather joked, tossing a wink back at his partner, who sighed.
"Never!" Ben promised, and Amir’s make up had to be ruined by now. Everyone in the room was chuckling, including Andrew, but when he glanced down at Amir’s grandmother, he had a contemplative look in his eyes.
"You remind me of someone..." He muttered, and Andrew felt his blood freeze. His expression did as well.
"Uh, hopefully, someone nice?" Andrew joked, but watched as their expression didn’t change.
"No. Someone I would consider bad. Tell me, you are a true alpha, correct?" Andrew felt his head spin. He didn’t expect to have this conversation so soon.
"Uh, yes." Andrew stuttered, his lips feeling stiff. "I-I just manifested." He told him, and Amir’s grandmother’s expression hardened. He patted Andrew’s hands.
"You don’t like him?" He asked and Andrew gave a dry laugh.
"Not at all." He replied, and watched as Amir’s grandmother grinned. He patted his hand again.
"Good. Good. I have no love for that family, and I am pleased to see you don’t use the name. It means he’s even more of an idiot then I already thought he was if he missed out on a man the Beckett’s approved of. Who is your Mother?" He asked, and Andrew felt his shoulders relax.
Thank god. An easy topic. And the fear of being ratted out was gone in a second.
"My Mom is no longer with us, but she was an accountant before she passed." Maxwell snorted from behind him, and Andrew felt him march towards them. He’d held off for quite a while. Andrew was actually impressed.
"Do not sell your mother short, Andrew. She was an incredible woman." Andrew laughed at Maxwell’s passionate declaration.
"You never got to meet her." Andrew said, smiling as the smaller man came to join them. He didn’t take Andrew’s hand away from the older omega, but stood close enough that their arms touched.
"Doesn’t matter. She raised you, and you’re a wonderful man, so I already know what kind of woman she was. She also started the A & D firm, so do not sell her short. You should lead with that. It’ll be good practise for today." Maxwell stated, and Andrew watched as Amir’s grandmother’s eyes widened.
"I thought that was a Proctor venture." He muttered, and Andrew grew nervous.
"Uh, well, kinda?" He said, and felt his gaze sharpen. "Uh, Kim is like my aunt? My Mom was from a branch family. I only found this out recently." He added at the end. He knew that the rest of the Beckett’s had to be listening in with big ears. Any new information was good information.
"My word. And with who I think is your Father...what on earth did you stumble across, Maxwell?" He said, then chuckled. "Welcome to the family Andrew. We must have you over for dinner soon. I love to cook feasts, and you seem like you could put away a bit." Andrew laughed, relaxing and smiling down at him.
"Well, my appetite has grown in the last few weeks." He admitted, and Maxwell coughed. Andrew knew exactly where his mind had gone, but he ignored it. It wasn’t a lie.
All of his appetites had grown.
"Then it’s settled. Once they come back from their honeymoon, we’ll have the Beckett’s over for dinner. A big family gathering, and Andrew will come as well." A warmth settled into his chest and Andrew sighed.
"I would love that." He admitted, and Amir’s grandmother squeezed his hand in response.
"No doubt you’ve never had a grandparent in your life. I’ll fix that." He muttered threateningly, but to Andrew, it sounded perfect.
