Chapter 424: LIX. Cold War Monster

"Damn, the new assistant is useless, the tea she was supposed to make hasn’t arrived yet."

Underground laboratory.

The Warlock Apprentice complained, while Akasa and Lagrange had outgrown such lowly pleasures, his students had not; they all wanted a few beautiful girls as assistants, not just for vanity but also for other satisfactions.

Lagrange appeared young, but was actually a Cold War monster.

He himself was not a straightforward scholar; in fact, most technical males are somewhat mentally disturbed.

He thought Emmerich was incredibly stupid. After the collapse of their big brother, scientists, generally regarded as idiots, earned less than pharmaceutical reps flirting with doctors.

Lagrange hadn’t flirted while his body was young again, not because he wasn’t technical enough, but because he had already been mentally impotent at a young age.

He fiercely preserved his late honor.

"Don’t you have anything else to do?"

Lagrange was growing tired of the spy that Akasa had planted by his side, an utterly annoying person who couldn’t offer any constructive suggestions, just a wasteful freeloader.

"Oh, I’ve annoyed you, sorry."

The Warlock Apprentice awkwardly laughed, realizing he had probably disturbed his work with his constant chatting.

There was no back door in this underground laboratory; one could only come and go through the main door’s elevator, and Lagrange had neither the ability nor the reason to leave.

The Warlock Apprentice, knowing when to leave, went alone to the elevator, pulling down the control lever.

The mechanical noise resounded, and the laboratory’s countless glass cylinders filled with greenish liquid also bubbled, giving the whole underground laboratory a rather eerie atmosphere.

Lagrange continued to write the instrument’s operational manual, but was also thinking about the matters the apprentice had mentioned earlier;not only those unfortunate students had come with him, but also some research staff and faculty from various campuses of the University of California.

The fight for resources was all about the Matthew effect.

The current situation in Aran was very favorable for Lagrange’s work; the stupid Emiriken Congress not providing funds was a major headache for him, but here, that was completely negligible; the Royal Court blindly approved budgets.

Although Lagrange had never met the Emperor in person, that person was secluded all year around in the grand Imperial Palace at the central part of the Imperial City, almost reaching the clouds, and to participate in the thrice-weekly cabinet meetings, everyone needed procedures and worried about behaving improperly before the monarch; all officers in the Royal Court were slick and sleek.

It was said that even within the Imperial Palace, one could not see the Emperor’s true face; the Emperor had several announcers relaying his words.

Those announcers were merely rumors and seemed not to be human.

Even though Lagrange had never met the Emperor, he was still a favorite of his.

Because the Emperor, with his regal bearing, had mentioned Lagrange’s name, indicating support for his research, the head of the Aran National Bank, Cicero, was to try to meet all of Lagrange’s demands.

Being one of the top powers in the world, scratching his head could be interpreted in a million ways; his personal mention of support was a big deal; it was of a praiseworthy nature, a blessing, which meant Lagrange had ascended; no one dared to target or trouble him.

Lagrange was now also a celebrity in Aran; although the civilians knew little about him, in the political arena, he could definitely be described as a top celebrity, known affectionately as ’little Lagrange.’

The Warlock Apprentice waited for the platform to descend at the elevator, pressing the bell to call his female assistant to come down to meet him; he hummed leisurely, planning to have a tea and a quick tryst later, letting Lagrange have some quiet time alone in the laboratory before continuing his surveillance work.

However, what he had not expected happened.

The female assistant did not appear.

Instead, three figures descended on the elevator platform, wearing metal masks and wrapped in white robes, bearing armbands with the Dragon Lord’s Emblem.

The Holy Spirit Church had its Heavenly Punishers, Ji Weng had Demon Hunters, and naturally, the Eternal Sect also had highly-ranked combatants, known as Time Swords.

"Damn."

The Warlock Apprentice was briefly stunned, before realizing there was no escape; how daring were the people of the Eternal Sect? This was a restricted area, strictly off-limits to anyone.

And these three had burst in without any alarms, which meant the guards were either subdued or killed.

If it were the latter,

the situation was extremely dangerous; he and Lagrange could very likely be killed as well.

The Eternal Sect was audaciously challenging, slapping the Emperor’s face.

Either these individuals were madmen, or they were signaled by the damn Pope.

Damn, religious madmen are the worst.

The priority was to immediately take Lagrange with him; if anything happened to him, he wouldn’t need the Time Sword to chop him up; given his teacher’s nature, a debilitated person would be directly cleansed.

"We are from the Eternal Sect, members of the Time Sword’s sixteenth squadron; this site involves openly defying the doctrines of the Aran National Church. Please vacate this area for a moment as we discuss a solution."

"The leader of the Time Sword spoke in a very sly manner, politely asking for a resolution without specifying what was violated and without breaking any face,"

"Just as it is reasonable for a car mechanic to carry a wrench at all times."

"The Warlock Apprentice was a clever person, but once taken away, he was completely at their mercy, subjected to whatever accusations they threw at him, such as the Great Memory Restoration Technique, even without openly challenging the Dragon Lord, things could still get messy."

"Strictly speaking, this place is an important industrial area, but this underground laboratory is the private property of my teacher."

The Warlock Apprentice spoke coldly, attempting to intimidate them by dropping Akasa’s name.

However, the madmen of the sect, who cared not even for their own lives, were not to be intimidated; not even by Akasa, let alone if the Pope ordered them to conduct a suicidal assault on the Royal Court tonight, they would clamor to be the first.

"Akasa was indeed a formidable mage, his skills divine and incomprehensible to mere mortals, far surpassing the ordinary magician."

"However, the skills of his many students varied greatly, many of them not even on par with the magicians of the Tower Alliance’s Upper House."

"It was just a momentary encounter."

"The church possesses a certain Magic known as ’Miracle,’ though it’s uncertain if it’s genuine, or simply arcane or Spell disguised as a miracle."

"Only the madmen understood the intricacies."

"The Eternal Sect also had its own miracles."

"The Time Sword."

"True to its name."

"In an instant, it was as if time itself had been sliced away, the speed was too fast, shifting like a shadow, inconceivably quick, a swift and lightning-like strike. The Warlock Apprentice’s arm was severed, blood gushing out as the amputated limb hit the wall like trash, splatting into a mess."

"As a student of that esteemed person, he had never suffered such a humiliation before. But to resist was also a dead end, and for a moment, he was so terrified that he trembled."

"Nobody was unafraid of the madmen."

"Lagrange heard the commotion here and hurried over, approaching the elevator area where he saw these three strangers and the armless Warlock Apprentice."

"He had already guessed what had happened."

"Conducting experiments in this part of the world had its disadvantages—too many unpredictable madmen."

"The leader of the Time Sword’s sixteenth squadron recited the words he had previously told the apprentice."

"Lagrange was also quite calm, assessing the situation. Had those guards outside been killed or what? They must have been subdued; otherwise the killing would have already started."

"The Sect didn’t want to completely break off relations, escalating to a major incident, they just wanted to irk the Royal Court, seeking presence for some privileges, and to test the Royal Court’s bottom line."

"This was a test."

"Lagrange was wisely aware."

"But he still harbored a Cold War mindset; researchers captured by the enemy would have a dire fate."

"So that’s it..."

"Lagrange took off his vest, removed his shirt, flaunting the body altered by Akasa with snaps and pops from his bones."

"He was no ordinary researcher without the strength to truss a chicken, having undergone intense training during the Cold War frontline to prepare for contingencies."

"Lagrange naturally looked down on these youngsters, considering them mere children, and pulled a spring-loaded knife from his belt."

"To the members of the Time Sword, such tactical daggers were mere child’s play."

"Don’t do anything stupid."

"The Warlock Apprentice cautioned Lagrange, your skills aren’t a joke, with my arm lost is minor; if you get chopped, I’ll truly be screwed, these madmen wouldn’t dare to kill us outright; otherwise, we’d be dead by now."

"Lagrange just sneered silently, not responding, calmly watching the three members of Time Sword’s sixteenth squadron."

"He hadn’t not killed before."

"Lagrange was a Hexagon Warrior, in an era rampant with spies, he too had chopped up some intelligence officers."

"When I was messing with the KGB, you lot were still nursing."

"Lagrange bore a natural sense of superiority from the Upper Three Flags of old Earth, considering these people barbarians."

"He charged forward."
