Chapter 68: A visitor
Kiyoshi’s response positive enough for him to go to bed after taking a mental note to visit Haruki the next day to confirm he was okay.
The next day at work was busy and when he finally got the chance to eat lunch, he met Miyoko eating lunch in the cafeteria with the younger colleague who was excited about having a "sister-in-law".
The young man waved him over to their table excitedly as soon as he saw Hiroshi.
When Hiroshi got his meal, he hesitated to sit with them wondering what they were doing together considering Miyoko does not work in their hospital.
"I made a new friend today," Miyoko said gesturing to the young man. "His name is Itsuki isn’t he so cute?"
Hiroshi returned the smile Miyoko gave him before turning to glare at the young man. The young man rose up hurriedly and picked up his tray of food.
"I will excuse my brother and sister-in-law immediately," the young man announced jokingly before hurrying away from them.
Miyoko laughed heartily as she commented, "He is so cute, look at him."
Hiroshi did not bother to spare the young man a glance as he made up his mind to warn him never to speak that.
The young man had such a daring personality it made him wonder when he might have given the young man the permission to speak to him in such a way but he could not think of one.
"How did you get in?" Hiroshi asking considering she was not a staff but she was eating comfortably in the staff cafeteria.
"Itsuki brought me in with him. He told everyone I was your girlfriend even after I tried to correct him," Miyoko replied with a nonchalant shrug.
"I will speak to him."
"I’m not complaining," she smiled with a hint of enchantment Hiroshi did not bother noticing.
"He told me your birthday is next week," she said when she noticed her charms did not work with him.
Hiroshi was taken aback by her sudden statement as he had been to busy to think about his birthday so her words were a reminder.
"How do you plan to celebrate it?"
"I have made no plans yet," he replied considering he would be at work that day and would most likely have dinner with his colleagues afterwards just like he did last year.
"How about we have dinner together?" She leaned forward blinking her eyes enticingly.
He leaned away from her with a serious look in his light brown eyes before shaking his head firmly.
"You have to. You don’t have anything you’re doing on that day, right?"
He thought of it but he could not remember anything he had to do on that day. He however, did not want to spend his birthday with her. He did not want to give her any more hope.
"You’re thinking too much. We are friends and what sort of friend will I be if I let you spend your birthday casually?"
He thought of what he want to he would have loved to do and Haruki was all that came to his mind. There would be nothing greater than being able to celebrate his birthday with the man he loved.
"So, what do you say?"
With a sigh, he nodded. "Fine," his voice came tired of her constant persuasion.
Her smile brightened as though she just hit jackpot.
"Don’t do anything excessive," her smile forced him to warn her as he imagined her doing something extravagant considering her personality.
"Hmm . . . You don’t have to worry. I just want to celebrate your birthday with you."
He began his meal and she continued hers when it was time for them to return to work, he stopped her and said, "Do not come here without informing me."
She raised her gaze to meet his with a slight pout of her lower lips. "Do you mean by that?"
She looked very wronged but Hiroshi felt even more wrong having to deal with the rumors especially when his father was made aware of it. He could easily foresee more trouble ahead if she keeps coming to visit him at work.
"I mean you shouldn’t come here again to see me," Hiroshi rephrased his words.
She sighed and shook her head unwilling to obey.
"I don’t want that. I want to visit my friend is there anything wrong with that?"
"There’s nothing wrong but are you okay driving here to eat lunch? Don’t you have coworkers to eat with at work?" Hiroshi was forced to ask.
Her eyes met his gaze filled with tears that seemed that they will drop any second. "How . . . How could you say that when you knew you’re right?"
Hiroshi found himself in a state of confusion as he reached to scratch his head. He had never had to deal with the fairer sex on anything aside from work.
He might have been a bit closer to some of his coworker more than the others but it never went beyond work and their work environment so facing this lady looking like she would cry because of him was not something he was used to.
He was handsome but his coldness was hidden behind a mandatory warmth he showed to his patients and colleagues. That was enough to keep them away from him on a personal level but Miyoko came to change these things. She was bold enough to ask him out even when his own father feared that he was asexual.
He never felt lonely or in need of company before he fell for Haruki but he knew he might have gone too far with the way he spoke to her.
"I will come to see you when I want," she told him firmly. "You agreed to be my friend and since you know I don’t have anyone to eat lunch with at work, how could you do this to me?"
The tears only pooled the more she spoke. She looked very wrong, very docile unlike her usual confident self. This made Hiroshi feel very guilty about what he said.
"So, can I come?"
Hiroshi remained silent for a while before giving in to her. "Fine," he sighed and he could immediately see her eyes brighten. "But we will eat outside, you must call me before you come and you can come only twice a week."
The lady paused for a while after hearing Hiroshi’s words. "Fine. I will tell you before I visit," she agreed with him smiling brightly.
She was so happy but Hiroshi couldn’t help but imagine how much she’ll disturb him over coming over.
Just when she turned to leave, Hiroshi stopped her again and said, "You know, Itsuki is single and he is a nice gentleman."
She was shocked by his words but he didn’t give her the chance to argue with him, he turned and left. If she had someone she loved, perhaps she won’t disturb him anymore.
When he met Itsuki who seemed to be avoiding him in guilt over what he did, he said, "She is a very nice lady and she’s single. I think you two would make a cute couple."
Itsuki was just as shocked by his words as Miyoko was and he did not wait for his response too before walking away to continue his work.
Later Itsuki met him to ask him seriously, "Did she say she likes me?" He looked hopefully at Haruki with his eyes brightened.
"I can ask her," Hiroshi responded casually.
The light in Itsuki’s eyes disappeared almost immediately before he said, "I thought she told you that. Why then would you say such thing?" The young man asked feeling wronged.
"Why did you tell everyone she was my girlfriend?"
"I’m sorry," the younger doctor bowed his head slightly and apologized.
Hiroshi felt he had taken care of a major source of the rumors and if they don’t see Miyoko again, they would have to believe they had over thought their relationship.
He gave the younger man a gentle pat before walking away.
He wanted so badly to see Haruki so he called instead as soon as he got off work. Over the past days, the multiple feelings he felt when Haruki called Aki’s name reduced drastically but that did not mean he forgot.
Haruki did not pick his call at first until he called again. Haruki told him he was busy and they could talk together some other time. He apologized and hung up.
He took his bath and went to bed that night.
With a few days going this way, his love for Haruki only grew. I wanted so badly to hear his voice to see him but when he thought of that phone call, he held back from calling or visiting Haruki.
He consoled himself when Haruki did not call him either. His birthday was fast approaching and the only reason why he remembered that day was because his heart stupidly in love kept wishing he would spend that day with the person he loved.
