Chapter 107: A proposal?

The alarm woke Haruki just in time for him to prepare to leave for the dinner. He had a quick shower and drove to the restaurant. When he walked into the private room he was led to, Satomi was seated.

When she saw him, she rose and bowed slightly before meeting his gaze with a smile that held a hint of seduction. He knew what she wanted without her saying it to him. He knew she liked him.

She wouldn’t be the first of such but considering the place his mind was at the moment he did not hesitate to play along with her. She was dressed differently from her usual formal outfits. She was wearing a floral dress on he had never seen her wear before.

It was a bit casual bringing out a gentle feminine vibe he had not seen her have before. It was also not too casual to match the atmosphere of the luxurious restaurant.

She ordered the new dishes she wanted to try with him as she had said –she was truly doing what she said she wanted to do with him. The dishes were all served and they focused on trying each of them.

Haruki eased himself into the moment tasting one dish after the other, their aroma captivating and their tastes delicious. He was almost certain the restaurant was going to make a lot of money from the dishes.

As a businessman, he couldn’t help but think about the profitability of such new dishes as he tasted them. Perhaps it was because he was eating with his secretary.

Satomi glanced at him occasionally as she also ate. They were so focused that all the times she tried to bring up a conversation, she ended up swallowing it down with a mouthful of food unable to break his concentration until the plates were almost empty and she could see he was ready to order dessert.

She held back an urge to clear her throat to get his attention first before she asked, "What do you think?"

Haruki raised his head calmly. He noticed her cheeks were a bit rosy with an obvious blush as her eyes met his gaze with the restraint she shows at work. It was as though she didn’t care at all but when he met her gaze firmly, she looked down a bit shyly.

"I think they will make a lot of profit," Haruki responded sincerely after all that was what he had been thinking about when she called for his attention with her question.

"Yes, I also think they would," Satomi had to agree with him. "But not as the boss, what do you think?" she asked again.

Haruki moved his gaze back to her and their gaze met again. She looked down again unwilling to maintain prolonged eye contact with him as her blush deepened in colour.

Haruki held back a smile. He never knew he would get to see another side of his abled secretary someone with very good professionalism he found her to be one of his best close employees. This was not a work setting and he could see that she threw all that out of the window in an attempt to seduce him.

"I think they are delicious," Haruki had to give the answer she wanted to play along.

Her eyes brightened at his response and she stole another glance at him still unwilling to meet his gaze fully. "I agree. What’s your favourite?" she asked.

The meal was almost over and Haruki could see that this was her attempt at starting a conversation. He looked at the mostly empty plates on the table.

He was not a professional food taster and he could not give a review like they do on TV but he knew he dish he enjoyed the most and it happened to be in closest to Satomi so he gestured to it.

She smiled and met his gaze briefly before saying, "That’s my favourite." She pointed at the dish closest to Haruki and Haruki could not help but feel a bit awkward at the coincidence. He could not help but feel that her game was spot on.

It was funny how as someone who does not bother with chasing and the last person he tried to chase was in love with his doctor, he found it to be quite amusing, he could not help but wonder what other trick she had up her sleeve.

She looked up at him with a gaze that suggested she was neither talking about nor pointing at the dish but rather at Haruki himself. This time her gaze lasted for a while and she only looked down when she felt like she was done passing the message she had for him with her gaze.

"Are you ready to order dessert?" Satomi asked when she got no response from Haruki who was unknown to her enjoying the show as though he was a third party in her attempt to chase him.

"Yes," Haruki replied with his usual indifference and looked out of the window of the room at the enclosed courtyard. The sound of running water from the fountain filled his ears as he focused on it rather than the noise of Satomi ordering the new desserts.

Dessert was served and Haruki tried them too just like he did with the other dishes, he found his favourite wondering if Satomi would ask him such a casual question again.

He shook his head and prepared to leave as soon as the dessert was over but Satomi seemed to be taking her time as though she had not noticed he was not eating anymore.

He wondered what she was stalling for and felt like asking several times but ended up biting back the urge as he took a sip of warm aromatic tea.

"I . . ." she began raising her head to meet his gaze again and placed her fork down. She cleared her throat and took a sip of tea too before clearing her throat again and holding his gaze this time for a bit longer.

Haruki watching her found it amusing to see her acting very out of character. He leaned backwards watching her indifferently as he waited for her to go on with what she had to say. He felt himself begin to run out of patience considering he was not used to her being this hesitant and bashful.

"I . . . I am single," she finally got herself to speak and got Haruki narrowing his eyes a bit confused by her choice of words. She looked down when she noticed his gaze getting indifferent once again. "I like you and I think it is not a bad idea if you and I get married."

She went straight to getting married. It was obvious she knew Haruki well– if she didn’t want to be one of his many lovers and then an ex-lover, she would have to go for marriage.

"I think I have a lot of advantages. I am smart and I am sure my kids with be smart too with a fusion of our superior genes. I . . . I might be an orphan but my adoptive father is very powerful and I am sure that is yet another advantage. I want kids, which will ensure you have as many heirs as you desire."

Haruki was someone who took marriage as a bit of a transaction and if he got married to her as she had proposed, he was almost certain that he would most likely not have any loss. He won’t benefit much but a loss was something he would certainly not suffer.

She knew of his private life, maybe not as well as Kiyoshi does but she knew he had lovers both male and female and yet she wanted to be his wife? He could not help but admire her courage but it also made him a bit suspicious.

"I don’t think they served alcohol," Haruki said scanning the table before raising his gaze again to look at her. "I don’t think you are drunk but you sound drunk." With those words said, he rose. "I will see you on Monday."

"No!" Satomi’s sharp determined voice stopped him as he headed for the exit. "I know what I said. From the day I began working as your secretary, I have always liked you. I want to be your wife."

"You can take next week off, I think you need some rest," Haruki’s words came cold and finally before he left without looking back.

Satomi looked down at her finger and could not hold back a sigh. She wished she had done this long before he got involved with the doctor. However, it might have become a bit harder but she was certain, she still had a chance if she worked harder after Haruki couldn’t marry the doctor.

Believing and trusting her thought, she took a deep breath and encouraged herself to continue.
