Chapter 129: “The Cryo Decision”
Chapter 129: Chapter 129: “The Cryo Decision”
The sky above Offshore Sigma was a crisp canvas of stars, unmoving and eternal, as if the world below had frozen in time. The remote island facility—hidden beneath the guise of an oceanic observatory—was silent, save for the steady hum of protective field emitters and the occasional sweep of surveillance drones overhead.
Inside, the walls pulsed softly with cool blue light.
And in the heart of the medical bay, Ren lay unconscious, encased in a sleek, vertical cryo-chamber. His body was suspended mid-air, surrounded by translucent coolant mist. Tubes and nanowire connections fed directly into his chest where the damaged Arc Reactor had once burned through his flesh. The new reactor prototype sat dormant, not yet synced with his vitals.
He hadn’t moved in 26 hours.
Aoi’s Alarm
A sharp chime echoed through the private quarters.
Aoi sat on the edge of the bed, holding little Hikari in her arms. The baby cooed softly, blissfully unaware of the war outside the walls of her family. Aoi looked pale, her usually bright gyaru fashion replaced with simple loungewear and her nails chipped from stress.
Lucia’s voice buzzed in softly from the overhead AI speaker.
"Mrs. Aoi... an emergency signal has been received. Unauthorized movement has been detected in the stratosphere."
"Define ’movement.’"
"A synthetic object matching HERA-series signature... descending."
Aoi’s heart skipped.
She kissed Hikari’s forehead gently and placed her in the crib before heading into the main operations deck of the island facility. The display screens showed a red blip tracking fast across the Pacific sky.
"Estimated impact: 41 minutes. Based on trajectory... it’s heading toward Japan."
Aoi’s fingers trembled.
The Decision
Lucia’s voice turned quieter now. As if it, too, felt the weight of the moment.
"There is still time to intercept... but I require Ren’s strategic interface. The nanotech satellite network is under his retina ID lock."
Aoi stared at the cryo-chamber from behind the glass.
Ren looked peaceful, like he was sleeping. But she knew how badly he’d been hurt. The burns across his chest, the damaged veins, the strain on his nervous system—the cost of defeating the clone had nearly been his life.
Waking him now... could kill him.
"Lucia... what happens if I do it?"
"Ren’s vitals are stable, but fragile. Awakening him early risks permanent damage... or cardiac failure."
"And if I don’t?"
Lucia paused.
"There will be no one left to stop what’s coming."
Aoi’s Moment
Aoi bit her lip, eyes stinging with the sting of unshed tears. She looked at the screen again. Then at Ren. Then at the silver chain around her neck—the protective nanotech necklace he’d forged for her with love, with care, with his life on the line.
She whispered, "You always protect us... But this time, I want to protect you."
Her hand hovered over the cryo-chamber’s manual override.
Lucia’s voice turned softer.
"If you wake him now... he’ll feel everything. No painkillers, no sedation. But he might survive... if he knows it’s for you."
Aoi pressed her palm on the override.
"Then make sure he knows it is for me."
End Scene
The chamber hissed.
Steam hissed from the seals. Alarms flashed in red and white. The frozen casing cracked open—
Ren’s eyes snapped open.
He gasped, violently, air flooding his lungs as he collapsed forward into Aoi’s waiting arms. His body was trembling, half-conscious, but alive.
"R-Ren... it’s me. I’m here."
He blinked, focusing on her face, and then whispered, hoarse and raw:
"What... happened?"
"The world needs you again," Aoi said softly. "But I need you more."
