Chapter 304: Chapter 218: It’s Also a Relief for Him

Patrolling the river for two days, thirty-one eel fishing boats were inspected, and over two hundred fishing nets were confiscated and cleared.

Although they failed to catch those strong-arm buyers of eel fry on water, the water bandits couldn’t escape the law either.

Dongqi Police Bureau quickly confirmed the identities of those water bandits based on clues provided by the Water Police Station and the Coast Guard. Ironically, the bandits were busy sneaking home for a family reunion during Chinese New Year, and were caught red-handed while eating the reunion dinner and watching the Spring Festival Gala. They have since been escorted back to Dacang by the Coast Guard.

returned to Yingchuan Port on the afternoon of the first day of the lunar month, just in time to catch the rebroadcast of the Spring Festival Gala.

Perhaps it was the festive spirit or because he increased his morphine dosage, Xu Sanye was in particularly good spirits that day, enjoying the show thoroughly. He had high praises for this year’s gala, especially fond of Dong Wenhua singing "The Great Wall", Yan Weiwen’s "One, Two, Three, Four Song", and "When I Grow Up, I Will Be You".

Han Yu, upon seeing his fellow disciple and Zhang Lan bringing their children for a New Year visit, quickly went back to Binjiang with his junior sister to pay respects to his father-in-law and mother-in-law, and took a trip to the Port Authority’s radio station to record several songs their master enjoyed.

On the second day of the new year, they went to Linghai to pay respects to his parents.

His elder brother’s house built in his sister-in-law’s village serves as the Old Han family’s onshore home, where his parents plan to retire when they can no longer manage the boat.

Like past years, on the third day, they went to Sansing to greet his grandmother, and his uncles and aunts.

Before they knew it, the Spring Festival had passed.

The master’s condition worsened by the day; he was in such pain that he couldn’t speak, and even two injections of morphine didn’t help. His sleep was poor, he ate very little, his face was sallow and his frame skeletal, his weight shockingly less than one hundred pounds, unable to board 001 anymore.

The conditions at the Water Rescue Center were subpar; they could only use 001 to take him back to Bailong Port. For now, 001 would not return to Yingchuan Port but would dock beside the Dunship at Yanjiang Police Station.

The master’s wife couldn’t manage on her own, so Old Qian, Zhu Baogen, and Xiao Yu took turns caring for him, and he and his junior sister would visit once every other day in Bailong Port.

With his cassette tapes and recorder, Xu Sanye needed to listen to the Spring Festival Gala songs whenever he was awake, to the point he couldn’t sleep without hearing them.

Those three songs were indeed quite good.

Particularly "When I Grow Up, I Will Be You"; every time Han Yu listened, he felt as if the composer and lyricist had written it just for him, moved to tears each time.

But today, they only listened to half before Xiao Yu, following the master’s eye signal, turned off the recorder.

Han Yu realized his master wanted to hear him talk, and quickly said, "It’s not busy at the station today, the holiday just ended, many enterprises in the development zone haven’t resumed work yet, and not many ships are passing through the lock."

Xu Sanye was completely mute now, just staring at Han Yu.

Han Yu felt a deep sorrow, squeezing his hand gently: "There’s been quite a change at the substation, Director Zhou was transferred, seems like he was moved to the Agricultural Bureau. The new director, surnamed Peng, is fifty-one this year and served as Political Commissioner at Changzhou Police Bureau for several years."

Previously, considering Binjiang Port would fall under local management, Binjiang Port Police Station was likely to be integrated into the Binjiang City Bureau, which is why the superiors assigned Zhou Hong to replace Scholar Yu as the head of the Water Police Team and the chief of the Water Police Station.

Now, although Binjiang Port has been reassigned to local management, Binjiang Port Police Station hadn’t been merged but instead wholly incorporated into Changhang Navigation Police, and Zhou Hong had already served five years as the chief; hence the City Bureau needed to adjust the leadership team of the Water Police Station.

Han Yu knew his master understood everything clearly and didn’t need any more explanations, and continued, "Political Commissioner Wang remains, while the Political Security Team Leader from the Port District Bureau has been transferred over as the deputy chief. City Bureau leadership mentioned you’re ill and need to rest, so there’s no need for you to continue as a member of the party committee of the substation."

When a person is "gone", the warmth in the tea fades!

Zhang Mingyuan felt sad hearing this, thinking that the City Bureau leaders could have waited a few more days to excuse Xu Sanye from the Water Police Station’s party member duties.

Han Yu understood perfectly that his master never cared much about these matters, otherwise, having held the position of Water Police Station party committee member for so many years, he wouldn’t have barely visited the substation or participated in the party committee meetings.

"Our brigade has also seen some changes. A new instructor arrived, and a police officer has been assigned to our squadron."

Han Yu glanced up at Chief Ding who had just walked in, continuing, "The new colleague’s last name is Luo, his name is Luo Wenjiang, 23 this year, a university graduate from Jiangcheng Educational University. Political Commissioner Wang said he was selected by the Provincial Party Organization Department and the Provincial Department, as part of the first batch of recruited select trainees from across the province’s police system."

Chief Ding pulled out a chair and sat beside the bed, tucking in Xu Sanye’s blanket, curiously asking, "Our police system also has selected trainees?"

"I just heard for the first time too, I didn’t know what selected trainees did until I asked Political Commissioner Wang. He told me they are backup cadres selected by the superiors, to be intensively trained since they’re expected to become leaders."

"Since they are to be intensively trained, why assign him to the Water Police Team?"

"Political Commissioner Wang said, among the many branches in the City Bureau, the tasks of the Water Police Team are the toughest, working there really toughens people up. I spoke with Luo Wenjiang at noon today; he seems alright."

"Trainee teachers usually become teachers, not policemen."

"He said he’s admired policemen since childhood."

Looking at his emaciated master, Han Yu added, "He’s a child of an official; his dad used to work in the City Committee and was just transferred to the Development Zone Management Committee. For someone like him, getting into a good unit is extremely easy. If he didn’t like being a policeman, he wouldn’t come to endure such hardships."
