Chapter 132: Chapter 113: This Time Is Different from the Last
At 6:18 pm, Xu Sanye personally made a call, instructing Old Zhang and the four men from the Water Police First Company to have dinner in the canteen, assign tasks after the meal, and then be on standby at the Criminal Investigation Fourth Squad.
Han Yu envied Chen Zikun and the others for being able to participate in the arrest operation, but envy was useless, with orders from Director Xu, he had to dutifully stand guard on the Dunship.
Unexpectedly, just after gathering in the command center with Sister Zhu, Director Jin, Han Xiangning, Liang Xiaoyu, and Captain Wang to watch TV for a while, Director Wang arrived late in the evening.
Zhang Lan, who should have gone back already, surprisingly came along with him.
He was not familiar with Director Jin and Sister Zhu, so Han Yu quickly introduced them.
Director Wang shook Sister Zhu’s hand tightly and hurriedly expressed his gratitude: "Director Zhu is really capable. Without your help, we would be in complete disarray tomorrow."
"Director Wang, this is both your event and ours; there’s no need for us to speak as if we’re strangers."
"That’s right, no need for us to speak as if we’re strangers."
Director Wang let go of the hand and said with an embarrassed face, "Director Zhu, Director Jin, I have come so late for two reasons: one is to express my gratitude, and the other is because plans cannot keep up with changes."
Sister Zhu asked with a smile, "What changes?"
"An hour ago, we received a notification from the County Party Office. After Secretary Chen attends the ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling ceremony tomorrow, he plans to make a detour... a detour to inspect the spring transportation situation at Bailong Port Passenger Pier, the long-distance bus station, and the ship lock. Our Director Yang and Director Ge from the Transportation Bureau will accompany him throughout."
"Does this have anything to do with our Port Supervision Bureau Third Team?"
"It’s not much related to you, but it concerns Salted Fish."
Han Yu was utterly confused, thinking what this had to do with him.
Director Wang couldn’t worry too much and turned his head with a smile and said, "Salted Fish, you should be familiar with these units. Since Director Xu is too busy, he asked me to look for you, to have you help us make contact."
"Secretary Chen inspects the spring transportation work, the Transportation Bureau should be responsible for the contact."
"They’re inspecting the transportation safety as well, and after all, Secretary Chen’s main visit is here tomorrow."
"The passenger pier and the ship lock have staff on duty, but the leaders have definitely finished work. The long-distance bus station has closed for the night; no one is there to make contact."
"First, get in touch with the port and the ship lock, and ask the staff on duty to report to their leaders. As for the long-distance bus station... I won’t leave tonight, and I will go to the bus station to find the responsible person early tomorrow morning."
The county leaders are really something, claiming to attend an event at the Yanjiang Police Station, and yet they plan to go elsewhere for an inspection.
Director Xu certainly couldn’t be bothered to handle it, and Han Yu didn’t want to deal with it, either.
However, Director Wang was quite a decent person, very polite to others and attentive towards new recruits like him, though he lied about the issue with the uniforms.
Initially, when told to follow Commander Li to Bailong Port at the bureau, he said the colleagues from logistics had all gone to maintain order, and that they would distribute uniforms in a few days.
The truth was that the bureau had never issued uniforms to newly arrived intern police; they had to wait until the probationary period was over to receive them.
Niu Bin, the clerk from the Criminal Investigation Fourth Squad, also didn’t have one, currently wearing his old uniform from his time at the Police Academy.
What was even more baffling was that the formal police officers who had been officially assigned didn’t have uniforms. Contract police officers, however, would receive their uniforms during training as soon as they were recruited.
While Han Yu quietly criticized the situation, he picked up the walkie-talkie in front of everyone to contact the central dispatchers at the passenger pier and the ship lock.
Just after he finished speaking to someone, Zhang Lan surprisingly asked with a laugh, "Salted Fish, I’m not going back tonight either; can you find a place for me to crash for the night?"
"Sister Zhang, the Fourth Squad has plenty of room; we’ve already given our dorms to the elder and second senior brothers."
"Salted Fish is right, Xiao Zhang, you can stay over there."
"Director Wang, Xu Mingyuan and I aren’t married yet, what would it look like if I stayed at his place!"
"You two have already registered your marriage, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about."
"Even being registered doesn’t make it right."
Zhang Lan, fearing being laughed at by others, firmly refused to go to the Criminal Investigation Fourth Squad.
Learning that she wasn’t going back tonight due to tomorrow’s event, Han Xiangning, holding her arm, laughed and said, "Sister Zhang Lan, there’s a single bed in the storage room under the deck; we can have Salted Fish and Xiao Yu move a bed to the first-floor duty room."
Zhang Lan turned and asked, "Salted Fish, do you have bedding?"
"No."
"No, huh? If there’s none, I’ll go to the Fourth Squad to get some."
Without asking, it was obvious she intended to get the elder senior brother’s bedding. What’s the difference between sleeping in his bedding and sleeping in his bed...
Han Yu really didn’t know what to say to her; he could only call Liang Xiaoyu to help move the bed with her.
As for Director Wang, they helped him move a bed as well, arranging for him to sleep in the Port Supervision duty room.
There were no new quilts; they could only bring down the instructor’s bedding—the instructor was good-tempered, knowing about it wouldn’t bother him.
Director Xu’s bedding couldn’t be touched at all. If he found out Director Wang had slept in his bedding, the consequences would be unthinkable!
After helping the two unexpected guests get settled, they continued watching TV.
Just when they were engrossed, the fax machine suddenly rang.
The fax machine brought by Director Yu was fully automatic. Han Yu waited for the fax paper to come out, tore it off to look, and casually handed it to the senior sister who was whispering secrets with her soon-to-be bride.
"Salted Fish, what’s the fax?" Director Wang asked curiously.
"The weather forecast, for maritime safety."
"Who sent it?"
"The Port Supervision Bureau Traffic Control Center."
Han Yu turned to look at the radio on the command console and patiently explained, "Actually, we could intercept the telegrams from Binjiang Port and also receive the traffic frequencies of the Port Supervision. But this place serves as both the command center and the office. If the radio is always on, the ceaseless calls from dawn to dusk would prevent us from getting any work done."
Not being connected to the Port Supervision’s traffic frequencies was a good thing. Otherwise, if an incident happened on the river, would you know whether to deal with it or not?
